The Kariye Museum (Church of the Holy Savior in Chora) has the best Byzantine mosaics in the world.
Originally built in the 4th century as the 'Church of the Holy Savior Outside the Walls' or 'in the Country' (chora), it was indeed outside the walls built by Constantine the Great. The current building was built in the late 11th century, and has undergone many repairs and restorations in the following centuries. Virtually all of the interior decoration—the famous mosaics and the less renowned but equally striking mural paintings—dates from about 1320.
The mosaics are stunning and breathtaking. They survived because they were covered by plaster and "rediscovered" in 1948.
St. Marks Catholic Church is where we celebrated Mother's Day Mass.
It is a very beautiful church.

It's that time of year again - The Silent Messengers are once again performing "Celebrating A Savior". The next few weeks take us to local churches and one weekend road trip. Once again I had a different place to sit giving a slightly different perspective. Here, he was standing directly in front of me.
During this performance, there is no speaking - either on stage or off. Cast members are "prayed in" and give up their voices allowing their actions to do the speaking. The red dot is a symbol of having given up their voice.
Haghpat monastery complex was founded in the X century.
The monastery has a complex plan. It consists of several buildings, some of which are connected by covered galleries like this one, called "The Savior's Passage", which connects the library depository and the St. N'shan church. It was also used as the monastery academy. The gallery extends around the east end of the church and opens into the courtyard with a view to the mountains and village in the distance.

When the last of Napoleon's soldiers left Moscow, Tsar Alexander I signed a manifesto, December 25, 1812, declaring his intention to build a Cathedral in honor of Christ the Saviour as a memorial to the sacrifices of the Russian people. The Cathedral had taken many years to build and did not emerge from its scaffolding until 1860. Some of the best Russian painters continued to embellish the interior for another twenty years.
After the Revolution and, more specifically, the death of Lenin, the prominent site of the cathedral was chosen by the Soviets as the site for a monument to socialism known as the Palace of Soviets. This monument was to rise in modernistic, buttressed tiers to support a gigantic statue of Lenin perched atop a dome with his arm raised in blessing.
On 1931, by order of Stalin's minister the Cathedral was dynamited and reduced to rubble. It took more than one blast to destroy the church and more than a year to clear the debris from the site. The construction of the Palace of Soviets was interrupted due to a lack of funds, problems with flooding from the nearby Moskva River, and the outbreak of war. The flooded foundation hole remained on the site until, under Nikita Khrushchev, it was transformed into a huge public swimming pool, the largest the world has ever seen.
With the end of the Soviet rule, the Russian Orthodox Church received permission to rebuild the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in February 1990. A temporary cornerstone was laid by the end of the year. A major part of the reconstruction funding came from the citizens' donations.
