After attending the Fandango Fronterizo on the San Diego/Tijuana border, my son spotted a bedraggled bird that had washed up in the surf. Turns out it was an Osprey clutching a large, very pregnant fish it had snared with its powerful claw. It was too heavy a load for the osprey until its feathers dried out. Meanwhile, it took turns alternately glaring at me for getting too close and then at a pesky batch of seagulls that were hoping for a free lunch - which I'm happy to report, they didn't get.
"One of my last stops in Oregon was the workshop of Eric Estlund of Winter Cycles. It was last because it was in Eugene, Oregon which is about 2 or 3 hours from Portland but the trip was well worth it. Eric is well known for his Alex Singer style head tube sleeve that he has perfected over the years. He has really nailed down the function and esthetics of his frames. You can spot a Winter from a mile away. I especially liked seeing a frame that he built when he was just starting and all the cool racks he has made. I really dig Eric’s work and I look forward to seeing him at the next San Diego Custom Bike Show."

ISO100, 1/4000 sec, plus a 3 stop ND filter ( in camera setting) equals 1/16,000 sec equivalent.
f/6.3, which for my sensor size, is about an f/16 equivalent.

JMF Haase Collection
This selection of beautiful photographs of early Navy aircraft is from the J.M.F. (Joseph Malta F.) Haase collection, courtesy of the San Diego Aero Space Museum. J.M.F. “Bunny” Haase was a Navy Chief photographer who documented all the aviation activities from the early 1920 through the early 1930s at North Island that at the time encompassed the Army’s Rockwell Field and NAS San Diego. His large collection also covers civilian and Army aircraft as well. His air-to-air photographs are featured in many aviation reference books but usually under the credit line of US Navy. Chief Haase also participated in the second Alaskan Aerial Survey in 1929 and was responsible for the first US motion picture of the sun’s eclipse done in 1930 that was done from an aircraft.
