We met at My Sister's Room bar in Atlanta, GA, on Sept. 6th, 2009 and have been inseparable ever since despite a 7-year age difference. We live in a very small town, work at the same company, and raise Jess's 2 children together as a family. We're together so often that friends have nicknamed us "Salmon Chess" (their version of saying Sam and Jess quickly). We've been engaged for a few years now and every day gets better and better. Mormon Sam Brannan, who had arrived in California in 1846 before the rest of the LDS Church (against Brannan's wishes) had settled in Utah, was by 1859 one of the first publishers in California, the first publicist of the California Gold Rush and as a result of selling picks and shovels to the incoming miners, the first millionaire in the state. Now as he visited the hot springs prevalent in the Northern region of Napa Valley, he developed an idea of a spa resort town.
The resort was a massive open complex with elaborate individual cottages, landscaping, stables, a communal dining rooms and large bathing pavilions, costing a fortune of $500,000. It opened in 1862 with 3 days of festivities for 3000 people. During this time, Brannan, now an apostate from the LDS (for embezzlement), was said to have toasted the new resort "I'll make this place the Saratoga (Springs) of California", only as he was drunk, it ended up as "the Calistoga of Sarafornia." To attract visitors, Brannan built the Napa Valley Railroad Company. Over the years, Brannan's spa attracted the rich and famous, but could never make more than a modest profit. Brannan was eventually forced to cede control after various personal setbacks, including getting shot and going through a messy divorce. The next owner, Leland Stanford, considered building a university here, but ended up doing so at his farm instead. The former hot springs is now Indian Springs Resort a few blocks away.
Of Brannan's expensive resort, the only remnants besides the hot springs are two cottages, still decked with gingerbread motifs. One was moved here and is now part of the local Silversteen Museum. Both Calistoga's name and its World-famous spas are the other two great legacies of Brannan in Napa.

The neighbor across the street asked Sam if he would re-roof her place...so my oldest son Russ, the concrete man, was asked if he wanted a weekend job to help and he accepted. He said roofs kick his but, he'd rather do concrete than roofs any day! LOL...they've been fighting a nasty cold wind that's moving a weather front in...so hopefully will get all done before any weather...but we're not suppose to have any problem weather....hope it stays that way! lol..:)
