Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova won this first round ladies' doubles match out on Court 8 against French Open finalist Sam Stosur and her partner Nadia Petrova.

King and Shvedova, playing only their third tournament together, went on to win the title, beating fellow non-seeds Elena Vesnina and Vera Zvonareva in the final.

They were the first unseeded team to win since Helen Gourlay Cawley and JoAnne Russell won in 1977, and only the sixth in Wimbledon history.

Well Sam has been kicking but on this roof. He only had my son for two days last weekend. The back half of this roof was huge and there was two layers of junk to take off which was tough. Plus had to lay new plywood and remove the rotten stuff where the leak was. So Sam has been finishing this in the wind all week. He has the front of the roof all stripped and ready to lay the new stuff. Hopefully Friday he'll be ready for it to be inspected. He is doing this on top of his fulltime job! I wish he would slow down! I thought the dramatic clouds looked cool in this! youtu.be/7F_opWg9_qI

Sam(uel) Houston, governor of two states, president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. senator, and military hero, was one of the most colorful figures of 19th-century America. Born near Lexington, Va., on Mar. 2, 1793, he was reared in Tennessee by his widowed mother. As a youth he spent much time with Cherokee Indians and developed close ties with them. Joining the army, he served under Andrew Jackson in the Creek wars (1813-14). In 1818, Houston resigned his commission and, after studying law for a few months, was elected attorney general for Nashville and appointed adjutant general of Tennessee. He served two terms in Congress (1823-27) and in 1827 was elected governor of Tennessee.

While governor, Houston married Eliza Allen on Jan. 1, 1829. For unexplained reasons (see below), however, the marriage was dissolved almost immediately, and Houston, under pressure from the influential Allen family, resigned his office. For the next 6 years he lived with Cherokee Indians in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), taking a Cherokee wife, Tiana Rogers (see below), and adopting Cherokee citizenship. He was a trader, advisor, and special envoy for the tribe on several occasions. It was in this last capacity that he first went to Texas, then under Mexican rule, in 1832 in a futile attempt to secure a land grant for the tribe. By 1835, Houston had moved to Texas. With the outbreak of the Texas Revolution in that year he was named commanding general of the revolutionary army. In March 1836, Houston was a delegate to the convention that declared Texas an independent republic. His command was reconfirmed, and he led the Texas army to a brilliant victory over Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto (Apr. 21, 1836).

Houston served as the first president of the new republic from 1836 to 1838 and was later elected to a second term (1841-44). After the annexation (1845) of Texas by the United States, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1846 to 1859. In the Senate, Houston was known for his staunch Unionism and friendship for the Indians. Unhappy that Texas seemed to be moving toward secession, he successfully ran for governor as an independent Unionist in 1859. Despite his efforts, however, the people of Texas voted to secede, and he was forced out of office in March 1861.

In 1840, Houston had married Margaret Lea in Alabama. She had persuaded him to stop drinking, for which he had a sizeable reputation, and to join the Baptist church. They had eight children. Houston died at his home in Huntsville on July 26, 1863. The city of Houston, Texas, was named for him.

I met Sam whilst down in Railay Bay in Thailand. He was just starting on his round the world travels. I said when he comes to London we should meet up for a drink.

He got to London the other day, so we met up and I gave him the quick tour of Borough. Then took him to The Lord Nelson pub for some good pub grub. Here he basking in the lights from London bridge.

When built this Sam's Club location was the largest Sam's in the world! Although it was surpassed by another location in Arkansas before this one opened. It was the second largest location for quite some time although I'm unsure what rank it currently holds.

Sam lived in my basement for a time, and he was the spitting image of my second husband!

These are original photographs! Please do not repost or blog these images without giving me credit, thanks!

My Uncle Sam, the husband of my grandmother's sister Rose.

These four photos were taken by me on a Kodak Brownie camera in June 1968 during the reception for my grandmother's 3rd marriage. I was 9 years old. This is my parents house, which they still live in, in North Hollywood, California (a suburb of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley). We called my grandmother Tutu which is the Hawaiian word. She lived in Hawaii for several years after WWII with her second husband . She returned to California after her 2nd husband died around 1958. She was married Barnett (Grampa Barney) in June 1968 when she was 66 years old. And they lived happily ever after. The end.

One of several hundred I took for their families holiday card and Andrews birth announcement. For some reason I really like this one...

I took seveal where both children are looking at the newborn...but the excitment of Sam and the proud look of Phoebe captures the moment IMHO.

For the last few weeks I've been borrowing Matt's lovely Pentax K-r camera, but JJ also offered to let me try out his Sony A100 DSLR! One of the easiest subjects is dear old Sam! Here is a shot of him (looking slightly odd) relaxing in the dining room .

He is an old boy now - around 15 years old, but still seems happy to be in our company, and although he can't walk far, he loves his (and our!) food!!

A 5x4 negative of an old college friend, Sam Wernham.

From 1992 to 1994 I gave up my full time job and studied photography at the Berkshire College of Art and Design in Reading. (If anyone knows Reading it used to be on the King's Road, behind the Science college.) Unfortunately I have lost touch with every one of the friends I made during those two years, a fact that I regret immensely.

My recent trip to England was made so we could get our home there ready for some building work. During the tidy up and clear out I found a huge box of photographic materials that dated from my time at college.

This is a picture of one of the many 5x4 negatives that I took and self processed in those two years. It comes from a project we were given to take a series of images in the style of a famous photographer. I chose Richard Avedon, and his 'In The American West' images as my inspiration. The set up was the same as his, a white sheet hung from a simple frame and placed in a way that no direct light would fall on the subject.

I am hugely proud of the images I took for the project, and this image is amongst my favourites. Digital is great for its immediacy, but there is nothing that can touch the detail produced by a negative this size. Apart from a bigger negative that is!

Where are you Sam?
