Samuel Houston was born on March 2, 1793, near Lexington, Virginia. When he was thirteen years old, his father died; some months later, in the spring of 1807, he emigrated with his mother, five brothers, and three sisters to Blount County in Eastern Tennessee, where the family established a farm near Maryville on a tributary of Baker's Creek.
Rebelling at his older brothers' attempts to make him work on the farm and in the family's store in Maryville, Houston ran away from home as an adolescent in 1809 to dwell among the Cherokees, who lived across the Tennessee River. Between intermittent visits to Maryville, he sojourned for three years with the band of Chief Oolooteka, who adopted him and gave him the Indian name Colonneh, or "the Raven." Houston viewed Oolooteka as his "Indian Father" and the Cherokees much as a surrogate family. He henceforth maintained great sympathy toward Indians. At age eighteen he left the Cherokees to set up a school, so that he could earn money to repay debts.
From 1813 to 1814, he fought in the Creek War and was wounded at Horseshoe Bend. He was elected to Congress in 1823 and 1825. In 1827, he became Tennessee governor. After moving to Texas in 1832, he joined the growing conflict between U.S. settlers and the Mexican government and became commander of the local army. On April 21, 1836, Houston and his men defeated Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna at San Jacinto to secure Texan independence. He was voted president in 1836 and again in 1841, then served as a senator after Texas became a state in 1845. Despite his pro-slavery views, he believed in preserving the Union. He became governor in 1859, but was removed from office after the secession of Texas in 1861. He went into self excile with his family living at the legdendary Steamboat House in Huntsville Texas. He died there in July 1863 following an illness.

Sam resented cameras, and virtually everything else. Here, he charges the backyard paparazzi, as my brother looks on.

I got Sam when she was just 5 weeks old from some good friends in Colorado Springs. I brought her home in the front seat of my car and she cried the whole way home. Once we started to bond, she was my best buddy. She and I lived in five different cities, took a lot of good naps together, went on countless walks together, fetched sticks and balls, she cheered me up during some rough times, and was such a great companion for almost thirteen years.
A few days ago she stopped eating and all tests pointed towards pancreatitis, something that is treatable and an issue that most dogs pull through. After many visits to the vet, I finally took her to South Paws Veterinary Hospital where they discovered fluid around her lungs and a few small tumors, nothing to do with pancreatitis. Even though she was coherent and lifted her head when I left the room, it became clear that she was in a lot of pain and wasn't going to pull through this. It was a tough decision to put her to sleep today, but it was the best thing for her. She's at peace now.
She lived a long, fun, full life and I'm going to miss her so much. I'm happy that a few of you got to meet Sam and I know that some of you will miss her too.
Sweet dreams, old girl. I hope there are lots of squirrels to chase and fields to run in where you're at now. You're the best dog anyone could have asked for.

I finally got around to starting Sam's body blush. It took me 5.5 hours to blush her, and I'm not even done yet! I still need to add more scales to her tail as I ran out of steam.
Her colors are so damn hard to capture though... they are richer in person.
