Sam has been sent away, falsely accused of greedily devouring the last of the Lembas. Now, after sliding back down the steps, he spies the bread, dropped over the edge by the foul creature Gollum. His face twists with rage as he clutches the Lembas. "I'm coming Mr. Frodo" he calls, as he turns to climb the stairs once more, hoping that he is not too late.

Just a Berner Sennen, one would think. Well, not quite. I've known many Berner Sennens, mostly obese, and neither very active, nor agile. Sam is slim, fast, agile, playful and can run amazingly fast.

Last night was one of the worst nights of my life. And of course Sam's too.
It may sound paranoid and silly and after-the-fact to say this, but I will anyway, if only to make myself feel a bit of relief; it really is worth it to try to enforce a 'no running in the house' rule if you don't already!
We maybe got too relaxed about it I think. Sam and Kale were playing and chasing and when Sam stopped in the doorway, Kale didn't, but ran into the back of him, sending him head first into the sharp door frame.
It was one of the most traumatic experiences I've had as a mother. Head injuries are not nice. We spent four hours in emergency, ending with a drugged up Sam and nine verticle stitches up his forehead and big horrid dressings which he ripped off as soon as he woke up this morning.. I haven't slept since it happened because I've been too worried about him.
He'll be scarred for life physically, and I think I will for at least a long time, emotionally.
It's hell seeing your baby in pain and having no control to make it stop, or undo what happened. Maybe it's just one of those things, and can't be helped with children, but right now I feel very guilty about 'letting it happen'. I was only a few feet away!
Just don't let your kids run in the house! They have that rule in child care centers, and schools etc. but we managed to overlook it. Poor Sammy...
Don't mind me, just feeling very down and out today.
Sam poses by the new Brown Trout calendar. His friends Robbie and Tanner are featured on the front and inside as well, and Sam is Mr. October!!!
Calendars are available at Brown Trout. Click on "back cover" to see Sam's photo (by Mark Raycroft) - in case you can't tell he's the one by the pumpkin :)
Of course, this calendar will be a lovely keepsake, but we are also looking forward to seeing all our flickr friends in the upcoming Flickr Flatcoats and Friends 2007 calendar!
