A 5x4 negative of an old college friend, Sam Wernham.
From 1992 to 1994 I gave up my full time job and studied photography at the Berkshire College of Art and Design in Reading. (If anyone knows Reading it used to be on the King's Road, behind the Science college.) Unfortunately I have lost touch with every one of the friends I made during those two years, a fact that I regret immensely.
My recent trip to England was made so we could get our home there ready for some building work. During the tidy up and clear out I found a huge box of photographic materials that dated from my time at college.
This is a picture of one of the many 5x4 negatives that I took and self processed in those two years. It comes from a project we were given to take a series of images in the style of a famous photographer. I chose Richard Avedon, and his 'In The American West' images as my inspiration. The set up was the same as his, a white sheet hung from a simple frame and placed in a way that no direct light would fall on the subject.
I am hugely proud of the images I took for the project, and this image is amongst my favourites. Digital is great for its immediacy, but there is nothing that can touch the detail produced by a negative this size. Apart from a bigger negative that is!
