Pavia - Aqui Também É Portugal by Daniel Arrhakis (2020)

Another work for the series Pavia for an exhibition for the beginning of 2021 , soon more details ... : )

The capture was made by me in a street of Pavia in the municipality of Mora, Portugal.

Here i put the flags to replace the television antennas with a symbolism that has to do with the title - Here is also Portugal - A warning for the desertification of the interior and for the isolation of the communities that are felt here with special relevance!

One of the characteristics of the Alentejo houses, of a unique floor with its tall and wide chimneys, as well as the yellow (or blue) bands are very evident here.

The Cathedral Church of Saint John: The Great Divine in the City and (Episcopal) Diocese of New York

commonly known as: the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, St. John the Unfinished

architects: Christopher Grant LaFarge (original design,1888) Ralph Adams Cram, William Halsey Wood

architectural styles: Gothic Revival ( 13th century N. French High Gothic), Romanesque Revival, Byzantine-Romanesque

construction started, cornerstone ceremony: December 27, 1892 (St. John's Day) Bishop Henry Potter

opened: November 30, 1941

In the March 1925 issue of "Masonic World", an article on the cathedral states:

“It is particularly fitting that the Masons, who were the principal builders of cathedrals and churches during the greatest cathedral-building period, should now have a prominent part in the movement to build America’s greatest cathedral (…) Little need be added to the story of Freemasonry during the cathedral-building period; its monuments are its best history, alike of its genius, its faith and its symbols.”

Artist: Jonathan Borofsky

For Borofsky, this hundred-foot tall aluminum sculpture composed of three figures meeting in the center, not only refers to the lightness inside our own solid bodies, but also the figures joining in the center, refer to the molecules of all human beings coming together to create our existence. This symbolism is especially poignant for this 100-foot Molecule Man on the Spree River in Berlin since the river marked the division between East and West Berlin."

The cold and darkness breaking into spectacular sunrise added to the symbolism of this day - to reflect on the meaning of war and to honour those who have served.

A complex intriguing reflection about faith and humanity in this mystic work made with photos of mine taken in Odivelas (Windows and building in background) and in Regaleira Palace (Sintra) mixed with some sculptures. Mystic Symbolism in a reflection about ourselves ...

Wish you all a wonderful weekend dear friends ! : )

°°°°°°°°°°°

Metaphor emphasizes similarities between two different things, and symbolism is an ancient technique by which imagery is used to represent an idea. By using these tools, we are enabled to go beyond what is immediately seen and communicate our concept via layers of meaning.

Sometimes a mediocre photograph is just that and nothing more.

It's just a photo of my dear 14-yr old cat Frits sleeping, mixed with a water surface bachkground.

But for how long will he be with me? 4,5,6 years? This sad shadow often darkens my mind, so I sought an expression for it.

A Peony is a Dandy

I’d rather be a peony

Not a daisy—she's too eager to be liked.

Not a lily—she's too serene to disturb the air.

Not a rose—she's too practised in her symbolism.

Not an orchid—she's too delicate and dependent on careful conditions.

I’d rather be a peony—the kind that blooms on her own terms,full-bodied, fragrant, and just a little unruly.

When she opens, the room fills with surprise. Unapologetic. Unforgettable.

The Baháʼí House of Worship is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Chicagoland area. Since the exterior is almost entirely white, it's a great candidate for a monochrome series of images.

This is the staircase in the Egyptian Room and is nearly identical to the staircase in the Colonial Room that was posted a few days ago (see "Stairway to..."). The view here is a different angle and clearly shows the design of the staircase as having a set of three, five, and seven steps.

If you were to visit this building and climb the staircase at the front of the building, you would, also, find that it contains three, five, and seven steps.

These staircases fascinate me. As I look over the photograph, I counted thirty separate items that serve some sort of Masonic symbolism. Obviously, the words on the 15 steps have meaning but so do the other fifteen items I can see in plain sight. And, while the steps each have a word associated with them, it may be that other allusions can be made.

In our world of self-help online books such as the [here I am dating myself] One Minute Manager, Seven Habits of Effective People, Chicken Soup, and, for that matter, How to Win Friends and Influence People, it is comforting to me to know that Freemasonry has been teaching the same things for hundreds of years right alongside the Bible and other works that have come down through the ages.

Nikon D200, tripod, f/8, 20mm, ISO 100, 5sec, 3 exposures @ 1 stop each, HDR in Photomatix Pro 32, adjustments in Adobe Photoshop Elements that include:

a. Cropping and obscuring the really secret stuff

b. Adjustments to correct perspective distortion in the vertical lines, especially, the left wall.

c. Reduced saturation to improve detail. The lights in the room cast a very strong yellow/orange hue.

I passed this sculpture so many times. You have to. It is made of stainless steel and placed in one of the busiest Wellington streets, in the perfect position to capture the colorful lights of the city after daylight, the nightglow of the capital.

The ‘Invisible City’, as it’s called, is the gigantic panel of Braille text that highlights the communication gap between those who can’t see and the rest of us.

The post is designed to remember all the folks, my countrymen and yours, the often invisible part of society, all those who finish schools, who work, play music, do sports, pay taxes, have and raise children, to the benefit of us all.

Black hole of Mind

- Where the thoughts, idea, opes, inspiration sucked into.

I thought so much the other day about why I create and why I feel so compelled to share stories with others. I love hearing different interpretations to inspire my world view. It is exciting for me to try and put as many different meanings into a new work as possible, to find meaning in all things and to work with symbolism.

I went out to shoot by myself, in my favorite shooting spot, and felt wholly at peace while doing it. I thought of so many stories sitting in an underpass with weeds growing all around me. It was quiet and felt safe and it was dark.

To have wings. To lose wings. To use someone else to lift us up. To allow others to help. To demand help. To hurt others to help ourselves.

All of these ideas went into the making of this image, and depending on your world view or state of mind, any of them could equally apply. There was a time when I felt that I couldn’t fly any higher, that I was about to fall. I wished for wings then. There have been times when I needed someone to lift me up, and I found them. There were times when I felt my well being was more important than other living creatures and so I used them to serve me. More and more I try to be like the butterflies, lifting others and myself all the while.

What does the world look like from your point of view? How can you get others to understand that through a visual medium? What symbols are important and present in your life? What do you want the world to understand?

If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.

Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all.

In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish.

A composite picture of two shots:

a.– A shot of the “OLD Settlement” within the village Kastráki) directly beneath Meteora, Greece in the fall. The historical village dates back to earlier than 1501, when it was mentioned in an Ottoman qadi’s court decision as “Quastiro” (in Turkish). Kastraki has been renowned for its vineyards, exquisite wine and tsipouro, in addition to the excellent view to Meteora.

b.– A shot of an OLD Signpost pointing to the “OLD Habitation of Kastraki.” Nowadays the signpost is worn out and almost illegible! When it was once brand-new, the settlement had already been considered as “Old.”

This Coincidence is quite interesting from a Semiotics viewpoint: In this exceptional case, the relation of the sign (the OLD signpost) to the meaning communicated (the even OLDER settlement of an Oldest village) happens to be beyond conventional; the relation is natural (it’s only natural that an old symbol communicates the meaning of an old settlement of an old village).

Meteora is the name of the group comprising many impressive and lofty rock formations: The height of the sandstone megaliths ranges between 1,000-2,067 ft (300-630 m). The vertical, distinctively spindle-shaped rock formation above the village is called Roka or Adrachti. The rock masses were formed 60 million years ago, are geologically unique and listed in UNESCO world heritage sites.

Architect Humberto Pittamiglio

The Castillo Pittamiglio is a building located in the city of Montevideo ( Uruguay ), more precisely Francisco Vidal Street, between September 21 and Rambla de Montevideo , at the Trouville point of the Punta Carretas neighborhood . The façade facing the promenade exhibits a replica of the Victory of Samothrace , representing "the victory of life", made by the Italian-Uruguayan sculptor Pedro Piccioli, which makes the building emblematic of the Montevideo coast.
