I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of my Flickr friends and followers a very happy Easter! May the days of celebration ahead be filled with lots of fun, laughter and if you go on an Easter Egg hunt on Easter Sunday, a chocolate Easter egg... or two!
However amongst all the fun and frivolity and chocolate take a moment to stop and remember the reason for the season, whether it be religious, or the simple joy of being with the ones you love the most.

The barbed wire is considered one of the invention that changed the conqueror of the West territories in USA. For the Native Americans however, it was "The Devil's rope". Indeed, it was another sign they were loosing their freedom.The negative symbolism of barbed wire continues in the modern world.
Looking back through some images taken on a visit to St. Mary's church Hickling Norfolk, earlier this year.
«Відносно оригінальної назви "Пирогощая" висловлювалось багато думок і припущень. Оскільки така цікава назва церкви існує тільки в Києві, спробуємо детально розібратися з її походженням.
Слово "Пирогощая" зустрічається ще і в Іпатіївському літописі 1155 р.: "Том же лете йде Андрей от отца своего (Юрия Долгорукого) из Вышегорода в Суждаль без отне воле и взя из Вышегорода икону святой Богородицы (пізніше отримає назву Володимирської. - Л. Т.) юже принесоше с Пирогощею ис Царяграда в одином корабли" [4, с. 117-119]. У даному випадку мова йде про ікону.
Існує кілька гіпотез походження назви церкви й ікони. Одні дослідники трактують походження церкви від назви ікони, інші - навпаки. Слово "пирогощая" в перекладі з грецької мови означає "башточка". Вперше таке тлумачення запропонував В. Завитневич. Воно було уточнено видатним знавцем візантійського мистецтва і грецької мови М. Кондаковим.
Думку, що назву церкві "Пирогощая" дала грецька ікона, підтримує Д. Ліхачов, вважаючи, що ікона Пирогощая, як і Володимирська, була привезена до Києва із Царграда ще до початку будівництва церкви.
Це могло трапитися у 1129 або у 1130 р., коли князь Мстислав відправив "в заточение (в греки) полоцких князей с их семьями". На зворотному шляху з Константинополя русичі, які супроводжували засуджених, могли привезти списки (копії) двох ікон - Пирогощої та Володимирської.
У монографії "Слово о полку Игореве и культура его времени" Д. Ліхачов пише, що ікона Пирогощая є копією ікони імператорського Влахернського монастиря у Константинополі "Одигітрії Башенної", де Богоматір зображено на тлі семибаштового Влахернського монастиря [36].»

When it comes to creating darkening, somber skies, Mother Nature gives it her best in October and November. This one served as a backdrop for the abandoned guard tower at the former Lorton Prison. I borrowed the title from Stephen King who borrowed it from Robert Browning who borrowed it from Shakespeare. Lots of mileage on that puppy. : ))

«Пресвята Матір Божа після Вознесіння Ісуса Христа жила на землі ще декілька років (одні християнські історики вважають, що 10 років, інші – що 22 роки).
Апостол Іоан Богослов, згідно з заповітом Господа Ісуса Христа, прийняв Її до себе в дім і з великою любов'ю піклувався про Неї, мов рідний син, аж до самої Її кончини.
Пресвята Мати Божа стала для всіх учеників Христових спільною Матір'ю. Вони разом з Нею молились і з великою радістю й утіхою слухали її повчальні бесіди про Спасителя. Коли віра християнська поширилася в інших країнах, то багато християн приходили з далеких країн побачити і послухати Її. Живучи у Єрусалимі, Матір Божа любила відвідувати ті місця, де часто бував Спаситель, де Він постраждав, помер, воскрес і вознісся на небо. Вона молилася на цих місцях: плакала, згадуючи про страждання Спасителя, і раділа на місцях воскресіння і вознесіння Його. Вона часто молилась і про те, щоб Христос швидше узяв Її до Себе на небо.
Одного разу, коли Пресвята Марія молилася на горі Елеонській, з'явився їй архангел Гавриїл з райською фініковою гілкою у руках і сказав Їй радісну звістку, що через три дні скінчиться Її земне життя, і Господь візьме Її до Себе. Пресвята Богоматір невимовно зраділа цій звістці. Вона розповіла про неї названому сину Своєму, Іоанові, і стала готуватися до Своєї кончини. Інших апостолів на той час не було в Єрусалимі, вони розійшлися по інших країнах проповідувати про Спасителя. Богоматір жадала попрощатися з ними, і ось Господь чудесним способом зібрав до Неї всіх апостолів, крім Фоми, перенісши їх Своєю всемогутньою силою. Біль пройняв їх, коли вони дізналися, для чого Бог зібрав їх: вони мали втратити спільну Матір свою. Але Божа Матір утішала їх, обіцяючи не залишати їх і всіх християн і після Своєї смерті, завжди молитися про них. Потім Вона усіх їх благословила.
У годину кончини незвичайне світло осяяло кімнату, де лежала Божа Матір; Сам Господь Ісус Христос, в оточенні ангелів, явився і прийняв Її пречисту душу. Апостоли поховали пречисте тіло Божої Матері згідно з Її бажанням у саду Гефсиманському, в печері, де спочивали тіла Її батьків і праведного Йосифа. Під час поховання сталося багато чудес. Від доторкання до гробу Божої Матері сліпі прозрівали, біси виганялись, і всяка хвороба зцілялася. Безліч людей супроводжували Її пречисте тіло. Юдейські священики і начальники намагалися розігнати це святе шестя, але Господь невидимо охороняв. Один юдейський священик, на ім'я Афоній, підбіг і схопився за одр, на якому несли тіло Божої Матері, щоб перекинути його. Але невидимий ангел відсік йому обидві руки. Афоній, вражений таким страшним чудом, миттю розкаявся, і апостол Петро зцілив його.»

The turtle is a sacred figure in Native American symbolism as it represents Mother Earth. The meaning of the turtle symbol signifies good health and long life. Turquoise represents good fortune. Coral soothes and protects and malachite is for balance and to stabilize emotions.

"In Norway, stave churches were built during the transition period from pagan religion to Christianity, around the 12th and 13th centuries. On these buildings you can find many pagan symbols such as dragon heads, Odin depictions, pagan symbols in carvings. The old Nordic faith and the new Christian faith existed in parallel for two hundred years. The Church accepted the original pagan elements probably because much of the symbolism and narratives could be reinterpreted in Christian terms."
My first thought when giving this image a title was that it looked like the focused flower was symbolically "letting go," perhaps just fed up with staying where it was. Then I decided it could be positive symbolism in that some of us rise to the top when overcoming obstacles. Crazy, macrophotography creates so many thoughts in my head when I see something close up.
A widespread symbol in the United States. Interestingly, religious symbols are different depending on what part of the world you happen to live in and revered just as strongly in those places.

The events occurring now in Ukraine weigh heavily on my mind and while distracted with some photos from a few weeks ago, this one, along with the quote, seemed to bring those thoughts together with words and symbolism.
I found this ring at a goldsmith in Kenmare, Ireland. It's full of symbolism to me : My love and I - we are two individuals, forming something new and beautiful together, being one and two at a time, supporting eachother's "gold". All this on a free will and in different playful shapes, but equal in our "yes" to truth and loyalty.
These are not our wedding rings, but my private little mind-supporters. ;)

This photo was taken at Kirche am Steinhof, Vienna, Austria. Kirche am Steinhof is one of the most important Art Nouveau churches in the world (mosaics and stained glass by Koloman Moser). Actually, these are two photos combined into one - that is my only contribution to the image.

For philosophically minded, I wanted to share the results of a quick research I've done on the Net:
St Peter, on the right, holds the key of Heaven. This looks straightforward enough. With St Paul, it is more complicated, it seems. The National Gallery page (www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/learn-about-art/pain...) says that a book and sword are the common attributes of St Paul. The book carried represents his gospel in the New Testament, and the sword is a reminder of the means of his martyrdom (he was beheaded). However, the Wikipedia article ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_the_Apostle ) lists sword as St Paul’s only attribute – and here he is depicted with a sword only. Has been the book forgotten? Is the sword more important? Is it as important as the key of Heaven?
I have more questions than answers...
