Occasionally touching base with the Melbourne tram scene in hindsight of my some 18 years in Melbourne before returning to NZ in November 1996, SW6.866 of 1941 decorated for Christmas at Waterfront City captured by Ian Green on Sunday, 29th November 2015.

the first floor windows of this house ‘wink’ as you pass by. I can’t find any info about it online, but the ‘eyes’ look like they are printed on lenticular screens. Unfortunately there’s a big tree in front of the house that blocks a full frontal shot!

Why are most of the W class trams now stored?
In 1990, the National Trust classified all remaining W class trams, thereby making them Heritage items. A combination of the Trust, unions and the State Government put an end to W class trams being removed from Victoria. This means that the trams listed as being stored at Newport Workshops are sitting in a bloody big warehouse gathering dust and slowly rotting away instead of either being sold or donated to individuals and/or groups that would take care of them and restore them to their former greatness.
Another set of trams is listed as being part of the Ready Reserve fleet stored at Preston Workshops. These 50 trams were supposed to be kept for emergency services such as extras for sporting events etc. but 43 of them have been stored in the old Plate Shop at the back of Preston Workshops, all bar five are not on rails. SW6 936 is stored in the workshops yard as it would not fit in the Plate Shop. Another 7 have been stored at various suburban depots.
The Balaclava Road/Hawthorn Road intersection was a fascinating place to spend time, as the tram tracks incorporated a perfectly symmetrical grand union. Route 3 ran through east-west, route 64 ran north-south, route 65 used the east-to-south curves and 69 the east-to-north while the occasional out-of-service car would use the other curves. The 65, which was peak hours only, has since been withdrawn and the 69 has been renumbered 16.
More point iron action with a crew happy to have their picture taken while prospective passengers wait for the doors to open.

Arriva London SW6 on route 102 in Finchley Road, Golders Green on 18th June 2018.
I believe this was the first date that Wright StreetDeck vehicles had worked on route 102, at the time principally operated with Enviro 400 buses supported by some HV-type Volvo hybrids. SW10 was also working the route on this date. The buses had been transferred from Garston garage to Palmers Green garage with the operation of route 340 as part of the run-down of Garston operations prior to closure.

Car 922 was selected to be the prototype for an extensive Class W8 updating proposal. Some work was performed in 1993 but the project was cancelled and the body shell remains stored in Newport workshops. Cars 946 and 959 were subsequently rebuilt incorporating some of the original proposed features and classed W8, they remain in service.
