Osborne & Little - the original wallpaper revolutionaries - are 50 years old and here's Sir Peter O leafing through some archives - I was very touched to have an invitation to a very personal celebratory lunch date.
But first I went to SW18 for a quick tour of HQ - this is beautifully modern and bright with - naturally - quite a bit more wallpaper than your average office. I was whistled through the studio (well, I was late...) and saw breath-taking giant mood boards carefully crafted as "melting-pots" for collections as far ahead as 2019. O&L work with fabric mills all over the world - India, Turkey, Italy, and our terrific wallpaper printers here in the UK. It's a two way process, explained studio head Sue Hardie - the mills say what they can do, make suggestions even, and the designers factor this back into their initial ideas. Embroideries are particularly intricate. Off camera is PR/advertising manager Sam Millar who's spent weeks combing the warehouse for old books, samples, records and so on for an absorbing 50-year illustrated time line for the King's Road showroom for London Design Week (opens Sunday). "Let's say record-keeping has not been our strong point." Nevertheless, the result, laced with detail, samples and photos, is a must-see/read for anyone who cares about London design.
Flash-back: when Peter came down from Oxford with a degree in PPE, he thought he might start dealing in the prints he'd been collecting..."Oh, Aubrey Beardsley and stuff like that...." Meanwhile his brother-in-law Antony Little (Kingston School of Art) had designed the Biba logo, and other bits of high-profile graphics around town. They took a studio together, and rapidly evolved a business which was part wallpaper and part "events/happenings" for London's feverish cultural elite of the later 60s/early 70s. An O&L wallpaper, hand-blocked in Brixton, and oozing art nouveau, was the interiors equivalent of the mini-skirt.
So can we expect to see any of those early papers again anytime soon? "Oh good lord no, they wouldn't work well enough today."
And what has sold really well? Lovely to hear that butterflies by Kristjana S Williams (who I've always adored) have been spectacularly successful. Matthew Williamson goes from strength to strength. Kit Miles (another personal favourite) is a recent protégé. And straight from lunch, Peter was dashing off to see Nina Campbell whose eminently-usable mix-and-matches never fail. Along with the innumerable O&L Studio designs which over so many years have shown the world that if it's wallpaper you want, well, swing by London for originality and excellence.
A bar/restaurant on East Hill. The website suggests there's a separate bar area, hence inclusion here on my list of pubs/bars. It's since turned into the Steam Bar and Restaurant, and is now closed.

Another Young's pub, looks like it's in a cottage. Apologies for blurriness. It seems like a rather nice friendly place, but they don't do food. PREMIK RUSSELL TUBBS
Premik, a composer, arranger, producer and an accomplished multi-instrumentalist performs on various flutes, soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, wind synthesizers, and lap steel guitar.
Premik has worked with everyone from Carlos Santana, Whitney Houston, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Ravi Shankar, Narada Michael Walden, Clarence Clemons, Ornette Coleman, Jackson Browne, Jean-Luc Ponty, Lonnie Liston-Smith, Scarlet Riveria, James Taylor, Sting and Lady Gaga, just to name a few. He is equally adept in pop, R&B, jazz, world and experimental genres.
Sax solos on #1 Hits -: “How Will I Know” (Whitney Houston) and “Baby, Come To Me” (Regina Belle).
Premik's first major recording breakthrough was with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra on the album“Visions of the Emerald Beyond.” Premik was a major part of the landmark Carlos Santana album "The Swing of Delight" which featured Herbie Hancock as co-arranger and co-musical director. Also featured were Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Ron Carter and several members of the Santana band.

The Langspil is an Icelandic drone Zither. The earliest mentions come from the 18th century, and it stopped being played in the early 20th century. The closest surviving relative is the German Scheitholt. It is a long box (70 to 110 cm), one end wider than the other with a sound hole. It has up to 6 strings, usually one melody and two drone strings. The left hand is used to fret the melody string, whilst the right holds a bow (shorter than a violin one) makes contact with all the strings. As there are no recordings or written music for the instrument playing it is guess work based on the surviving instruments and some photographs of it being played.
The instrument in the photo was built by Michael King from Cheltenham. It is not an exact reproduction but has enhancements like fine tuners, a pickup and flatwound Jazz Guitar strings.
Langspils are assigned the number 314.122-71 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.
31 = Simple Chordophones. Instruments which are in essence simply a string or strings and a string bearer
314 = Board Zither. Instrument uses a string bearer that is shaped like a board, or is the ground.
314.1 = Instrument with strings parallel to the string bearer.
314.12 = Instrument has a resonator.
314.122 = Box Zither. Instrument has a resonator made from slats
314.122-71 = Strings are caused to vibrate using a bow.

In 1904, the Frame Foods baby food company opened its factory in Standen Road. The building is in a distinctive art nouveau style, with green ceramic tiles, and the slogan 'Nourish and Flourish' on the exterior. The building has now been converted into flats.
