This brick structure was built in 1911/1912. It is the second church building on this site. The first burned in 1893. The current building was designed under the direction of the parish priest, Father Henry Heitz. He was the last of a long line of French priests serving the parish and the surrounding Pima Native American communities. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

This shot is from the night glow celebration in Provo over the 4th of July weekend. About a dozen balloons took over a grassy area next to the BYU campus and turned on their flames in the dark sky. The surrounding crowd was thrilled. Great colors!

The mouth of the harbour provides access to the Solent. It is best known as the home of the Royal Navy, HMNB Portsmouth. Because of its strategic location on the south coast of England, protected by the natural defence of the Isle of Wight, it has since the Middle Ages been the home to England's (and later Britain's) navy. The narrow entrance, and the forts surrounding it gave it a considerable advantage of being virtually impregnable to attack from the sea. Before the fortifications were built the French burned Portsmouth in 1338. During the civil war parliamentary forces were able to carry out a successful cutting-out expedition within the harbour and capture the six-gunned Henrietta Marie.

I quite like the green colours surrounding the grebe in this photo, but , at the same time it is a reminder that many of our once pristine lakes are changing for the worse. Although a lot of the green here is reflection from a oak woodland behind, unfortunately some of it is the water itself. Algae and duckweed can be seen and is a clear indicator of enrichment -“Eutrophication” where the nutrients accumulate in a body of water. This results in an increase of microorganisms causing algal blooms and bacterial growth and depletion of dissolved oxygen etc. with

environmental degradation.

Fertiliser runoff from farming and sewage pollution are the main causes. This change in the water body will affect the whole food chain and this Grebe sits very near the top of this food chain. So , yes I quite like the the effect in this photo but at the same time it is, as I said, for me, a reminder.

Thank you for having a look at my photos. Comments or faves are very welcome and much appreciated.

The walls surrounding the castle Spantekow (it was closed for the day when we were there). The entrance is beneath the big, white slab - actually a relief portrait the builders of this complex Ulrich and Anna von Schwerin.

There had been a castle here since the middle ages, but they built a Renaissance castle 1558-1567 and it is said that this is the most important Renaissance castle in northern Germany.

The castle Spantekow can be found by the village Spantekow, close to Anklam in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in north-eastern Germany.

The mountain Sveinstindur is positioned near the shout shore of the highland lake Langisjór, practically in the middle of Iceland. The height of the mountain is 1093 meters, and it is higher than most of the surrounding mountains. The elevation is about 350 meters as Langisjór lake is placed at an altitude of 670 meters. Sveinstindur mountain is one of the best places in Iceland to get a good view of the Highland and probably one of the best viewing places in Iceland. Here you have a view to six glaciers, many great volcanos, hundreds of mountains, long and winding rivers, and the horizon for hundreds of kilometers in any direction. You just have to be there to understand the magnitude of the view.

Since mid- December, I have been daily hiking the gorgeous lands surrounding St. George, Utah, lands which are part of the geologic formation known as the Colorado Plateau. The sculpted cliffs and canyons of this area present themselves through an amazing colour palette of crimson, vermilion, organge, salmon, peach, pink, gold and white, dotted in places by iron concretions - black, spherical rock marbles that collect in shallow depressions.

This image - composed in the Paradise Valley just outside of St. George - provides an example of the visual feasts one finds in this region. In the days to come, I will post other photographs from Utah’s portion of the Colorado Plateau, images I hope you will enjoy.

Happy New Year, Everyone, and may 2025 bestow upon you good health, pleasing accomplishments and many moments of joy.

CHELMSFORD

This is Chelmsford, a relatively new city, created in 2012. It has had the name City attached to it for many years due to the Cathedral and the Football Team, created in the 1920’s as Chelmsford City when we were a market town.

The images shown here are comparisons taken by the celebrated Fred Spaldings, Jr. and Sr. who took many pictures of Chelmsford and the surrounding areas. Their studio was close to the Cathedral and Shire Hall.

I think the Spaldings may have been disappointed with the modern day Chelmsford. Many of the shops are very familiar with so many towns and cities across the country. Although, if you look up to the first floor and above, you will find remnants of the old town. Architectural features, odd doors, old windows and now modern graffiti artworks adorn many of the buildings and other subways and electricity power boxes (I don’t know what they are called but I will be posting something later). However this is only my opinion and I’m sure that many people do like what they see.

This first series of comparisons are taken where Duke Street meets Tindall Street, New Street and the High Street and I cannot believe the similarity between the first two images, however the next four images couldn’t be so far apart. So much for town planning.

Surrounding the pond, tall grasses and trees provide shade, creating a cool, relaxing atmosphere. The stillness of the water, interrupted only by the occasional bird or fish, enhances the sense of calm. It's the perfect place to escape and soak in the beauty of nature.

What more could one say about the Silver Strand Beach other than it’s simply one of the most stunning beaches you could ever lay eyes on 😍 Certainly one of Ireland’s finest horseshoe beaches, complete with its surrounding natural sea grass landscape. Located on the extreme western point of rural Donegal, far away from the everyday bustling of congested towns & traffic jams.

On arrival you are still extremely high above this cove which was carved deep into the surrounding bedrock throughout millions of years of wave erosion. There’s a steep 174 stepped path leading down to this dreamy beach. An experience your mind will never forget walking down to & an experience your legs will never forget climbing back up them 😅 Great for both your body & mind.....

Such a surreal feeling to gaze across our vast Atlantic Ocean (The Pond) knowing that the next stop is America & Canada! Silver Strand is pretty much a little bit of heaven tucked safely away here in Ireland’s side pocket 💚

Close up of the forest surrounding the lake. It is a mix of evergreen and deciduous trees.

The main purpose of the CBET (community-based ecotourism) in Yeak Laom is to conserve the forest and the lake that are important for Tampuan people in the surrounding areas, which is roughly consistent with the needs of tourists who want to visit a pristine forest and an beautiful lake.

The entrance fee to the lake goes to the Yeak Laom community, and the community members manage the lake and the surrounding forest. They can also sell handicrafts and foods in designated areas. This arrangement has worked well so far for more than two decades.

Isolated Cloud, Chiesetta di San Pierino, Tuscany

Captured last May during my week travelling around Tuscany without clients. It was wonderful to discover the same locations that I shoot in September (when I run my workshop) looking all green and lush with an abundance of flowers.

However this beautiful chapel (which is considered the 'little sister' to the iconic Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta) has ploughed fields surrounding it as it is located on a hill near the Camugliano estate. It was built in the mid 1400's.

Regarding the cloud, I waited patiently for a few minutes before one came along and made my day.

I will be the first to admit that this is not the greatest work, the only reason I am uploading it is because it has taken me hours and I did a better job than I thought that I was able to, so no need to comment. Hopefully I will continue to learn how to do this better!

The area surrounding the bay itself, also called Marina Bay, is a 360 hectare extension to the adjacent Central Business District. It is also the new downtown of Singapore built on reclaimed land. In the reclamation process, Telok Ayer Basin and Inner Roads was removed from the map by reclaiming land, while the Singapore River's mouth now flows into the bay instead of directly into the sea.

Time for another spiral staircase and I got the chance during my recent stay in Bath. Beckford's Tower, originally known as Lansdown Tower, is an architectural folly built in neo-classical style on Lansdown Hill, high above the Georgian City of Bath, Somerset, England. The tower and its attached railings are designated as a Grade I listed building.

The tower was built for William Thomas Beckford, a rich novelist, art collector and critic, to designs by Henry Goodridge and completed in 1827. Beckford used it as a library and a retreat, with the cupola at the top acting as a belvedere providing views over the surrounding countryside. The Italianate building at the base of the tower housed drawing rooms and a library which is now a Museum. The pink of the inner walls of the Tower originated from the taste at the time of building for red décor. It is open only in the summer at weekends.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 mm lens at 10mm. Taken with a Tripod on a flat area in the centre among lights shining up which provide the shadows of the railings on the wall. There was no problem with a Tripod as I was the only visitor at the time. 3 raw images 2EV spacing processed in the end with the 0EV image in RAW and copying in the minus 2 EV image with a layer mask used to reduce highlights. This is the flat and relatively wide area of the pass, which, under the snow, hides the Pramollo lake/Stausee, which is a shallow artificial basin where the water, coming out of the soaked peat bog that characterizes the surrounding land, converges.

Peat is a deep and water-rich soil, with these characteristics it has helped the Spruce (Picea abies or Picea excelsea) to stay quite healthy despite the many dry and extremely hot summers (even at high altitudes).

Elsewhere this tree, a prevalent component of the Siberian taiga and widespread in the inner Alpine valleys, is suffering from parasites and lichens that attack this tree weakened by a soil that has become progressively poorer and too hot in summer.

A high percentage of this species has already died, especially in the sloping areas where water is scarcer, the land more exposed to the sun and generally to the wind that on October 29, 2018 (Vaia/Scirocco Storm) caused a domino effect of these weakened trees, especially between Carnia, Comelico and Cadore.

The account at the time seen from the sea:

www.flickr.com/photos/22873479@N08/31014649097/in/album-7...

It is precisely on the slopes that the Spruce/red Fir/Norway Spruce would be most useful, as an anti-landslide, thanks to its ability to root widely and deeply, but the moist and fresh soil it needs is now only found in the valleys with marked thermal inversion or in these high mountain areas where the snow is still abundant and resilient, while peat, as mentioned, is very useful in this case.

Spruce/Picea Abies characteristics:

To facilitate the arrival of Italian skiers, the Austrian resort helps clear the snow from the small, winding road, that leads to Nassfeld from Pontebba and with its snowcats spreads fresh snow on a cross-country ski run, which is also a pedestrian path, (despite the disagreements...), which makes an 8 in this area, all in Italian territory, and thanks to them, it must be said, this pass is almost always reachable, even in the middle of winter, effectively cleared after a snowstorm and easily walkable and skiable thanks to the compressed snow.

Surrounding areas in Carluke, Scotland. Snow had fallen two days before then it was a cold -4c on this day.
