The lake and surrounding park offer an excellent retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city`s sights and streets. The many resident swan couples form the finishing touch to it`s romantic character.

The coastal river Reie entered the city here. The river was canalized and made to continue to the centre of town. There are several explanations as where the name "Minnewater" comes from.

A legend tells the story of a young and pretty girl named Minna who was in love with Stromberg, a warrior of a neighbouring tribe. Her father did not agree with her love and arranged her to marry a man of his choice. Minna escaped and ran into the forest. When Stromberg finally found her, she died in his arms of exhaustion. The lake was named after Minna and the bridge by the lake was considered the bridge of love, in her honour.

The lake was used as a water reservoir. Water for the Canals enter the lake, fed from the Ghent and perimeter canals. The pink brick lockhouse (Sashuis) which overlooks the long rectangular basin, regulates the level of the canals in the city centre.

The main attraction of Praia da Rocha are the spectacular natural rock formations surrounding the beach. These impressive ochre-coloured cliffs give the beach a fascinating feel. Literally, the name Praia da Rocha means 'Rocky Beach'. The beach is quite sandy.

Praia da Rocha is one of the most well-known beaches and resort towns in Portugal. It is located on the Algarve coast in the town of Portimão, about an hour's drive from the Faro Airport. Google

I have to confess to getting a little worried at this point on my ascent of Side Pike! The inversion seemed to be climbing as quickly as I was and a thought it may not be possible to actually get above it!

I needn't have worried though as I climbed further the misty cloud settled and drifted back down to the valley sides, revealing the Langdale Pikes and surrounding Peaks. I took this hand held with my little camera as I climbed Side Pike, just in case the cloud continued to rise and I couldn't get a tripod shot on my big camera from the summit.

As it was I got quite a few decent shots from the summit as the sun began to set. I will post a panorama of the late scene just before Christmas.

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️

Parc Jacques Cartier-DSC_8178 A shot of the Jacques Cartier River and surrounding mountains in Parc Jacques Cartier north of Quebec City.

Another shot from the archives and one of my first “Big Glass” shots. Taken in April of 2017 and on my first trip into the woods lugging around my then new 600mm lens…an investment that was years in the making! I had decided to go off trail at Muscatatuck NWR in search of roosting owls. An hour or so in I noted a huge cavity in a large tree…a perfect home for something! I found a spot away from the surrounding stickers and set up to see what might be inside.

The bottom rim of the orifice was well worn, a great indication of activity. I decided to sit for a bit and wait. After twenty minutes or so of keeping an eye on a hole in a tree, I decided I was wasting my day and stood up from my comfortable spot at the base of a large oak tree. Just as I stood and started extending out my monopod leg, something caught my eye flying through the woods. I believe the large tree him me from him perfectly as he threw on the airbrakes and made an emergency landing on a large limb maybe 25-30 yards away.

We both just staired at each other for what felt like an eternity as I feared that as soon as I pointed my lens at him, he would take flight. Surprisingly, he just sat and looked around and at me, as if wondering what the hell I was doing off the popular trail. I took several dozen shots, gave him a nod with my head and thanked him aloud for being so kind. I then walked away at an angle that showed I meant no harm.

Having something that you are searching for come to you is such a gift.

Waitematā Harbour is the main access by sea to Auckland, New Zealand. For this reason it is often referred to as Auckland Harbour and is crossed by the Auckland Harbour Bridge, despite the fact that it is one of two harbours surrounding the city. The Waitematā forms the north and east coasts of the Auckland isthmus. It is matched on the south by the shallower waters of Manukau Harbour.

The Wooden Pole on the Peak District's Longshaw Estate is said to stand on the site of an ancient pole. You can see the pole itself in the distance in the top right corner of this photo. Although periodically replaced by the National Trust, who now own the land, the original pole is believed to have served as a way marker/guide post on an old packhorse route and may also have marked the boundary between the villages of Hathersage and Holmesfield. Whatever its original purpose, it occupies a commanding position beside the A6187, and yet many visitors to the area drive past without even noticing it. However, its status as a landmark gives the whole area of countryside surrounding it the name Wooden Pole.

peony, (genus Paeonia), genus of about 30 species of flowering plants (family Paeoniaceae) known for their large showy blossoms. All but two species are native to Europe and Asia, and several species are cultivated as ornamentals and for the floral industry.

European common Peony

garden peony

There are three distinct groups of peonies: the herbaceous Eurasian peonies, the Asian tree, or moutan, peonies, and the North American peonies. The herbaceous peonies are perennials that grow to a height of almost 1 metre (about 3 feet). They have large, glossy, much-divided leaves borne on annual stems produced by fleshy rootstocks. In late spring and early summer they produce large single and double flowers of white, pink, rose, and deep crimson colour. The fragrant Chinese peony (P. lactiflora) and the European common peony (P. officinalis) have given rise to most of the familiar garden peonies. P. lactiflora has provided hundreds of cultivated varieties, including the Japanese types, with one or two rows of petals surrounding a cluster of partially formed petals in the centre (petaloid stamens).

The tree peonies are shrubby plants with permanent woody stems. The plants sometimes attain a height of 1.2 to 1.8 metres (about 4 to 6 feet). They begin flowering in late spring. The blossoms vary in colour from white to lilac, violet, and red. Tree peonies require a hot dry summer season for best growth, and they can be grafted in late summer or autumn on the roots of herbaceous peonies. Horticultural varieties have been developed from the Chinese species P. suffruticosa. A race of hybrids, developed by crossing P. suffruticosa with the yellow Chinese P. delayavi, has both single and double flowers, sometimes tinged with red. Many varieties have been grafted onto supportive rootstock and so cannot be readily propagated by simple division. Peonies are seldom grown from seeds except in breeding programs; the seed takes about two years to germinate.

Two peony species are native to North America. Brown’s, or western, peony (P. browni) ranges from California to Montana, and California peony (P. californica) is found only along the Pacific coastal mountains of California and Mexico.

There's always going to be a taboo surrounding mental health. No matter how many of us suffer, no matter how many of us turn away and ignore it, it remains one of the most distressing disabilities of our time. But this guy, Ren Gill, this genius musician and poet who's lived with devastating illnesses for so long, brings us light in the raw truth if you can bear to hear it.... His song moves me to tears.

Epilogue:

"It was never really a battle for me to win, it was an eternal dance, and like a dance, the more rigid I became, the harder it got. The more I cursed my clumsy footsteps, the more I struggled. And so I got older and I learned to relax, and I learned to soften, and that dance got easier. It is this eternal dance that separates human beings from angels, from demons, from gods. And I must not forget, we must not forget, that we are human beings."

Villa Carlotta is a palace and museum in Italy, located on the shores of Lake Como in Tremezzo.

Giambattista Sommariva, politician and patron of the arts, bought it in 1801 and transformed it into a true museum, making extensive renovations in the gardens.

The Villa received its name in homage to the other owner Charlotte, Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen (daughter of Princess Marianna of Prussia), who received the palace in 1843 from her mother as a marriage gift.

Although the palace is beautiful and contains some furniture and works of art on two floors open to the public, it is really the garden that attracts attention.

As I said earlier the ample garden and woodland surrounding the palace, in addition to offering a pleasant atmosphere for tour and relaxation, are very beautiful and interesting.

And they also include some tropical plants (various palm trees) as well as exotic flowers (orchids, bromeliads, succulents). A small and well maintained Botanical Garden.

Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Region of Valencia and is located opposite the city of Alicante, 11 nautical miles offshore and near the Santa Pola headland. In fact, it’s more than just an island: it’s a small archipelago that comprises the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao as well as the Isla de Tabarca itself. It is approximately 1,800 metres long and measures some 400 metres across at its widest point.

In the past, its shores were a refuge for Berber pirates and, in the 18th century, King Carlos III ordered the island to be fortified and a town built, in which to house several families of Genoese fishermen who were being held prisoner in the Tunisian city of Tabarka. The walls surrounding the town have been officially declared a Historical and Artistic Site and an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The image that pops up in the minds of every Indian when the name of ‘North-Bengal’ is taken is of unadulterated and uncontaminated natural splendor. Hidden amidst misty clouds, the tiny hamlet of Lava is often considered the gateway of the pristine Neora Valley National Park. Located about 30 kilometres from Kalimpong and nestled in virgin pine forests, Lava is one of the few places in West Bengal to receive snowfall. It is Located at an altitude of 2350 metres.

It has been one of the known bird watching paradise for many years. The surrounding Pine and Juniper forests makes it an ideal habitat for birds. Rangbang Valley, Upper Rishi Valley, and Neora Valley provides great birding vantage points. Several species of birds can be seen here like Hill Partridge, Tawny Owl, Hawks, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Great Barbet, Golden Throated Barbet etc.

This water castle was first constructed in the 14th century.

Around 1559, the castle's protective walls surrounding the castle underwent a reconstruction to better ward off enemies from attempting to capture the village or the castle. The castle belonged to several families including the Balog, Pongrác and Bakošov families.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a part of the castle was remodeled into a more period manor house.

The office at Tilden Park and the surrounding gardens in spring.

The impressive three-storeyed Ynysypandy slate-slab mill, and its surrounding yard, rail-access and water-supply system, was built to serve Gorsedda quarry in 1856-7 by the local contractor Evan Jones of Garndolbenmaen, probably to the design of the distinguished engineer James Brunlees. It is ingeniously planned so that the natural fall of the site assisted the manufacturing process. An internal pit accommodated an overshot water wheel, supplied by the Henwy stream, and on the south side a long curving ramp brought branches of the railway from Gorsedda quarry into the mill at two different levels, serving the middle and upper floors. The grand, round-headed openings are closely spaced like a Roman aqueduct, and derive from foundry practice. The eastern gable is surmounted by a decorative feature incorporating a false chimney stack, and the windows were at one time framed. It is one of very few architecturally ambitious buildings in the slate industry of Wales.

The mill specialised in the production of slate slabs for floors, dairies, troughs, urinals, etc. In its heyday, in 1860, it was producing over 2,000 tons per annum, but seven years later production was down to 25 tons per annum (due to the poor quality of the quarried slate) and the business went into liquidation in 1871.

The building provided a venue for eisteddfodau until the roof was removed around 1906. It was conserved by the Snowdonia National Park in 1981 and is accessible to visitors.

Geologically, the rocks surrounding the amphitheater are representative of the Fountain Formation. Originally the place was known as the "Garden of the Angels" (1870s-1906), and then as "Garden of the Titans" during the Walker years (1906–1928). The park, however, had always been known by the folk name of "Red Rocks", which became its formal name when Denver acquired it in 1928. The amphitheater's rocks are named "Creation Rock" on the north, "Ship Rock" on the south, and "Stage Rock" to the east. Red Rocks Amphitheatre was designed by Denver architect Burnham Hoyt.

"Those Christmas lights,

Light up the street,

Down where the sea and city meet.

May all your troubles soon be gone,

Oh, Christmas lights keep shining on."

Lyrics from "Christmas Lights" (2011) written by Christopher Anthony John Martin, Guy Rupert Berryman, William Champion and Jonathan Mark Buckland, performed by Coldplay.

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 27th of December is "festive lighting". This year for Christmas a dear friend gave me some lovely glass ornaments for my Christmas tree, including one of Big Ben. I decided to highlight it by surrounding it with colourful Christmas lights given to me by another, very dear friend, last Christmas. Together I think they make for a striking image. I hope you like my choice of subject for this week's them, and that it makes you smile.

As this is the last "Looking Close on Friday" before the New Year, I should just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the group a very happy New Year. May the year ahead be filled with happiness and joy for you all.

Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside make the towering Rock of Dunamase a strategic place to build a fortress. Through the centuries, warriors have fought to control this site. The Rock of Dunamase is a popular historic attraction found overlooking the valley of the O’Moores, just outside Portlaoise, County Laois. It was the location of an early Christian settlement known as Dun Masc and later became an important Anglo Norman fortification.

The Vikings pillaged the settlement in 842. Later in the 12th century, when the Normans arrived in Ireland, Dunamase became one of the most important Anglo-Norman strongholds in Laois.
