Photographed in Kotka, Sundarbans. Bangladesh.

Walking around, no tiger in sight. But we did see many monkeys and deer on our walks. We were protected by two armed guards of the Forestry department, just in case a tiger would sneak up on us. (Or maybe even more dangerous: one of the infamous Sundarban pirate gangs.)

Calm, Silent, Beautiful..

This is not an oil painting :)

Sundarbans, literally means beautiful forest, is a combined forest spread in Bangladesh and India. The vast swampy delta of the two great Indian rivers, Brahamaputra and the Ganges extends over areas comprising of mangrove forests, swamps and forest island all interwoven in a network of small rivers and streams. Sundarbans is the biggest mangrove forest in the world and is a treasure island of bi-odiversity. The Sundarbans has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.

The Sundarban - the largest continuous block of mangrove forest in the world. It is a part of the world's largest delta. About one third of the total area of this forest is covered by river channels and tidal creeks, varying in width from just a few meters to 5 kilometers in some places! All parts of the Sundarban forest are subject to tidal inundation during spring tides. The Bangladesh part of the forest is dominated by a high mangrove forest cover.

Chital or spotted deer square off in the Sundarbans, Bangladesh. June 2010.

These are not prehistoric creatures walking out of the first oceans :) During the low tide, parades of Mudskippers can be found skipping in and out of the water in their own peculiar waddling style.

A Collared Kingfisher in flight. These are commonly found in Sundarbans, but as with all birds very hard to spot once they blend into the background.

Flood water breaks farm land beside the embankment.

The first tiger I have ever seen in the wild, and it was this beauty at Sundarbans. The stripes are now forever burned in my mind!
