The Sundarban - the largest continuous block of mangrove forest in the world. It is a part of the world's largest delta. About one third of the total area of this forest is covered by river channels and tidal creeks, varying in width from just a few meters to 5 kilometers in some places! All parts of the Sundarban forest are subject to tidal inundation during spring tides. The Bangladesh part of the forest is dominated by a high mangrove forest cover.

Pneumatophores - these specialized aerial roots enable plants to breathe air in waterlogged soil.

The surface of these roots are covered with lenticels which take up air into spongy tissue which in turn uses osmotic pathways to spread oxygen throughout the plant as needed.

Walking around, no tiger in sight. But we did see many monkeys and deer on our walks. We were protected by two armed guards of the Forestry department, just in case a tiger would sneak up on us. (Or maybe even more dangerous: one of the infamous Sundarban pirate gangs.)
