Maleta Stories
Marissa Largo - Toronto, Canada
Magkaisa Centre - Toronto, Canada
Installation, Visual Art
With the Centre for International Experience as its backdrop, a projected stop-motion animation of a woman kneeling before a closed suitcase, or maleta, is seen. Slowly, the maleta begins to unzip itself by a force still unknown. What emerges, wrapped in Filipino newspapers, is the embodiment of the histories and narratives of people who have come to this land. Facilitated by the Magkaisa Centre, participants are invited to share their "maleta stories" of how they came to be in Canada on baggage tags, which then become apart of the web-like installation affixed to the British colonial architecture of the Cumberland House, constructing a collective family tree of migration. A gallery of community-based artworks created by members of the Magkaisa Centre resides inside.
A very little cut-out of an overview picture taken from the top of Tate Modern in London.
What's the story behind this?
Is the man giving him a punch, something to eat or is he just taking a speck of dust out of the other man's eye? Are they friends, or lovers? What are they eating?

~♥GoodBye Story♥~
~"Do You Know Why I Chose You Story?" The Man Asked As He Stood In Front Of Her.
Story Said Nothing As She Stayed Tied Tightly To The Metal Chair. She Kept Looking At Her Feet Trying To Figure Out A Way Out, A Way Free. She Could Hear The Sound Of Cars, But Where Were They? Near A Highway? In A Little Shack Maybe? The Room Of A Store? Where Ever She Was She Knew She Had To Get Out, Get Out And Find Her Sister. The Man Slowly Walked Around Story, Not Taking His Eyes Off Her.
"I Chose You Because Of The Fact You Are Different. Different In ways You Could Never Imagine. If You Would Just Give In, Let Me Help You. Together We Could Take What We Deserve. Get Treated How We Deserve." The Man Then Stopped Right Behind Her, Leaning In To The Point He Was Right By Her Face.
"The World Could Be Ours Story. No One Would Treat You Different. They Would Treat You Like A Queen. Don't You Want That?" Story Took A Second To Think Before Realizing, It Was What She Wanted But At What Cost?
"I Bet There Are A Lot Of People You Would Love To See Begging For Mercy. On There Knees Willing To Give You Anything You Wanted. Money, Clothes, Maybe Even Love." That Word. Love. Had A Strange Affect On Her, Made Her Feel As If She Was Floating On A Cloud. It Could Just Be The Fear Mixing With Panic? Either Way Love Was A Word She Didn't Quite Understand. The Man Was Now In Front Of Her.
"What Do You Want Story?" The Man Asked Story Thought For A Minute. What Did She Want? Freedom Was One But She Knew He Wouldn't Let Her Go. Her Life Back To The Way It Was? You Could Never Go Back In Time. What Happens Is What Is Stuck Forever No Changing It Once It Is Done. Maybe Is Was Food. She Hadn't Eaten Since This Whole Thing Started. The Thought Of Food Made Her Mouth Water. But What Was She Thinking. This Wasn't The Time To Think Of Food, She Was Moments Away From Either Death Or Freedom. She Then Knew What She Wanted. Without A Second Thought She Lifted Her Head Up. Looked The Man Right In The Eyes. And With Tears Forming Said "A New Dad"~
The Sound Of Music Blasted Threw Story's Headphones As She Turned Her Ipod Volume Up. She Looked Out The Window At The Passing Trees As The Car Sped By Them. The Sun Was High In The Sky Meaning It Must Be Around Noon. Story Missed Her Friends Already Even Though They Just Started Driving Away From Her Old Home. Why Did They Have To Move? Why Was It Every Time Mom Got A Letter They Were Packing Before You Could Even Think? Questions That She Knew Would Never Be Answered.
"Story! Turn That Down!" Toni Yelled As She Yanked The Head Phones Out Of Story's Ears. Story Then Slapped Her Hand Away.
"Don't Do That!" She Yelled Back. Toni Was Her Older Sister, Only By A Year Though. She Always Wanted To Act The Boss, When It Was Clear She Wasn't.
"Kids Knock It Off!" Her Mom Yelled As She Turned On The Blinker To Turn. Unlike Toni Her Mom Knew Shes Was The Boss, And Made Sure They Did Too.
"Then Tell Her To Turn The Crappy Music Down." Toni Said Bluntly.
Storys Mother Looked At Her Threw The Rear View Mirror.
"Hunny, Please Turn It Down" She Said Sweetly. Story Smiles And Did As She Was Told, Toni Just Rolled Her Eyes And Looked Out The Window. Story Never Knew Why Her Sister Was Always Mean To Her, Its Like They Were Enemy's Instead Of Sisters. Story Must Have Fallen Asleep Cause Next Thing She Knew Her Mom was Shaking Her Awake.
"Story, We Are Here." Story Sat Straight And Stretched. Toni Was Already Inside The House. Story Unbuckled And Steps Out The Car, Taking In A Big Breath Of...Perfume? Out Of Confusion Story Ended Up Tripping And Falling To The Ground. She Could hear Toni Laughing As She Quickly Got Up To See A Young Boy Around Her Age Staring At Her. Story Could Feel her Face Getting Hot, Witch Meant Her Cheeks Were Soon To Be Red. She Quickly Turned And Ran Past Her Laughing Sister. As She Ran Into The House She Noticed Someone Already Lived Her. A Women around Her Moms Age By The Way She Looked In the Picture On The Fireplace. She Was Standing Next To 2 Little Girls. Or That Could Be The Mom And Who Ever Lives Here Is One Of The Girls? Either Way, Someone Lived Here.
"That Me with My Sister And Mom" A Voice Said From Behind. Story Quickly Turned To See A Women In A Suit Standing Over Her. Her Complexion Stated She Was Around 25. Her Hair Was Well Colored In Auburn With A Black Tone. Her Eyes Were A Darkish Green. And Her Lips Were Shinny With What Must Be Lip Gloss. She Was Tall And Curvy, Like An Hour Glass. Her Suit Had A Tag. 'E. Miller'. That Must Be Her Name Story Thought. Or The Name Of Who Ever She Works For.
"This Is Your House?" Story Asked Taking A Quick Look Around.
"Well, It Is My Moms, But She Is In The Hospital. So I Decided To Stay And Take Care of The Place While She Is Away." Hospital? Story Thought, Then She Realized The Womens Mother Must Be Around 80 Or 90. Not Being Able To Live On Her Own, Or At Least Not Live Alone Healthy.
"Oh...I'm Sorry. Must Be Hard." The Women Looked At The Picture Before Walking To It And Picking It Up.
"Sometimes...It Is Not Like It Was When I Was Younger. Being A Kid...Not Having To Worry About Anything But Playing With Friends." Story Watched As She Then Kissed The Photo And Put It Back Straightly On The Fireplace. By The Way She Was Acting, Her Mother Must Be In Bad Shape. It Made Story Think About Her Mom. Would She Soon Have To Take Care Of The House While She Was Sick In The Hospital? She Was Only 35, So That Must Be A Long Ways Away. Then Again, These Days Perfectly Young And Healthy Women Are Ending Up In The Hospital. So Was It Possible For Her Mom To Also Be In The Hospital? Story Shook The Thoughts Away As The Women Walked Back To Her.
"I'm Bonie" She Said As She Held Out Her Hand. Story Took It And Followed Her Lead Into A Hand Shake.
"I'm Story. Pleasure To Meet You Bonie." Bonie Smiled Sweetly And Looked Twords The Front Door.
"She Must Be Your Big Sister Huh?" Story Turned To See Toni Texting And Leaning Against The Front Door Frame.
"She Reminds Me Of My Older Sister..."
"In What Way?" Story Couldn't Stop Herself From Asking.
"Beauty And Attitude." Storys Mom Walked In With Her Purse In Her Hands. She Walked Over To Us And Smiled.
"I See You Met Bonie Story." Bonie Smiled And Put Her Arm Around Story As If They Knew Each Other Very Well.
"Yes And We Are Becoming Great Friends." Story Smiled To Hide The Fact She Was A Little Creeped Out By Bonies Sudden Arm Around Her Shoulder. Toni Must Have Went To Look Around Cause She Was No Longer At The Door. Story Wished She Could be Her Sister Right Now, Not Having To Stand Here And Pretend To Not Feel Creeped. Matter Of fact, Why Was It Story Was Always Stuck In The Weird Situations? She Tried Not To Get Stuck But Everywhere She Turned There Was Something To Greet Her. Maybe It Was The Same With Toni.
"Good. Story Find Toni. Then Meet Us In The Living Room" Mom Stated As she Walks Into The Living Room, Bonie Followed. Story Walked To The Door Before Stopping Quickly. Meet Us...Why Would Mom Say Us. Story Thought For A second Before Looking Back At The Photo. Could...Bonie Be...Her Moms Sister? Or Maybe An Old Friend? She Had To Be Something For Them To End Up Here. Toni Pushes Past Story Nearly Knocking Her Off Balance.
"Where Is Mom?" She Asked Smiling At The Thought Of Story Falling Again.
"She Wants Us To Meet Her In The Living Room"
"Why?"
"How Should I Know?" Toni Made A Face At Story Then Headed To The Living Room. Story Watched Her Disappear Before Following. That's When She Saw Something She Never Expected. She Stood By Toni Just As Shocked As She Was. Story Knew Something Was Weird About This Arrangement And Why Her Mom Said "Us". It Wasn't That She Was Her Sister...Or Friend....She Was...Her Lover.
A Few Moments Later Her Mother And Bonies Lips Parted And They Were Both Looking At Them. How Could This Be? Her Mom Liked Guys...She Had To Cause Of Th fact She Only Dated Men Back Home. Yet Here She Is...Locking Lips With A Women They Never Met Before. Or...Did They?
"Girls. I Bet This Is Confusing For You Both. Im Sure In Time You Will Understand." Toni And Story Were Sitting Now, Still As Shocked As They Could Ever Be.
"I Hope This Doesn't Mean We Cant Be Friends. I Would Like To Get To Know You Girls More." Bonie Stated. Toni Didn't Seem To Like The Situation Cause She Ended Up Storming Out With Her Mother Chasing After Her. Story Stayed Sitting Staring At The Women She Thought Was Maybe Her Aunt. Or A Family Friend, But No, She Was More Then A Friend. Did This Mean Maybe All Those Letters Were From Bonie Asking Her To Come Live With Her? If So Why Did It Take 6 Towns And 3 Years To Finally Come. Story Had A Lot Of Questions But Didn't Know When The Right Time Would Be To Ask Them.
"Story. I Hope We Can Be Friends" Bonie Said As She Was Suddenly Beside Her. Story Looked At Her For A Second Before Standing Up And Walking Out The Room. She Felt Bad, But she Couldn't Stop Herself. Her Body had A Mind Of Its Own And Didn't Allow Her To Reject. She Went Upstairs And Looked In The Room That Was To Be Hers. The Walls Were Painted Pink With Little Butterflies Splattered All Over It. It Had 2 Windows One Showed The front With All The Houses And Cars. The Other One Was Of A Little Side Yard.
She Could See The Neibor Planting Some Flowers In her Side Yard. She Looked Up And Stared At Story Before Quickly Getting Up And Almost Running Inside. That Was A Weird Way To React. Maybe She Was Shy, Or Thought Story Was A Stalker Taking Pictures Of Old Women For Some Gross Fetish Site. Story Would Never Do That, But The Women Didn't Know That. Toni Grabbed Story By Her Arm And Turned Her To Face Her.
"Can you Believe This?!" Story Yanked Her Arm Away And Walks Out The Room Leaving Toni Confused And Aggravated. Story Headed Downstairs To See Bonie Going Through One Of Her Boxes. She Slowly Reached The Bottom And Watches Bonie For a Few Minutes. She Looked As If She Was Looking For Something. What Could She Want From Her Stuff? Bonie Pulled Out A Picture Of Story And Her Mom. She Stared At It For A Few Minutes Before Seeing Story And Quickly Putting It Behind Her Back Standing Up. Before She Could Say A Word Toni Walked Down The Stairs And Pushed Past Story Causing Her To Stumble. A Few Hours Went By And Everything Seemed To Be Slow To Story. It Felt Like The Hours Were Only Seconds. Toni Never Said A Word Or Even Looked At Mom. Bonie Couldn't Keep Her Hands Off Her When Ever They Weren't Making Out They Were Cuddling. Story Sat And Fixed Up Her Room To Her Liking. Hanging Up Posters And Pictures Of Her Friends From All The Towns She Has Been In. Even A Picture Of Her First Boyfriend. His Name Was Evan Sanders. He Was a Soccer Player And Enjoyed Writing As Well. He Was Tall And Thin Witch Made Him Good At Soccer And being Able To Run Though A Crowed Of Kids Trying To Steal The Ball. He Had Blonde Hair And Tan Skinned Due To The Fact He Was Full Mexican. He Always Wore Name Brand Shirts Such As Hollister And H&M. He Was The First Boy To Ever Actually Want To Be More Then Friends, But Not Want To End Up In The Bed With Her That Night. It Was Hard For her To Let Him Go, And Even Harder To Think Of Him Happy With Another Girl. After She Finished Remembering The Past She Fell Onto Her Bed And Let Her Face Fall Into her Comfy Pillow. It had Been A Long Day And She Was Ready To Sleep. Ready To Dose Off And...
"Knock Knock...May I Come In?" Bonie Asked As She Opend The Door. Story Sat Up And Smiled Slightly. Bonie Walked Over And Sat at The End Of The Bed.
"You Doing Ok? I Mean...Now That You Know Me and Your Mom Are...Together." Story Hadn't Really Given It Much Thought. Should She Be Ok? Or Was It Ok To Be Like Toni And Treat Mom As If She Doesn't Exist.
"I Really Want To Be Friends...I Want You To Be Able To Trust Me. Like I Trust You." What Bonie Did Net Sent Chills Down Storys Spin. Bonie Leaned In And Kisses Story On The Cheek. A Women She just Met Hours Ago...Kissed Her On the Cheek. How Was She Supposed To React? Smile And Kiss Her Back? Run Out The Room Crying? Instead She Smiled And Noded. Bonie Smiled Back And Walked Over To Storys Pictures. She Studied Them As If She Was In An Art Gallery. Story Noticed Something Sticking Out Of Her Pocket, Without Thinking She Sneaked Over And Snatched It. Bonie Turned To See Story Standing There As If Nothing Happened. She Smiled Then Left The Room Shutting The Door behind her. Story Took A Deep Breath Then Sat Back On The Bed. She Looked At The Paper In her Hand And Realized It Was A Picture. She Turned It Over And What She Was Shocked Her. It Was The Picture Of Her And Her Mom...Only...It Wasn't Her...But Bonies Face Stuck Onto Her Body.
And With It, The Words That Will Haunt Storys Memorys Forever. Goodbye Story.

Bedtime is so much easier now Ellie is back in a routine. Bed for 7, a story or three and then snuggled down into her @heyduggee duvet cover and watching her favourite dvd before she goes to sleep.
The duvet cover is fantastic quality and Ellie loves how colourful it is. It has all the characters on one side and then a huge Duggee on the reverse. Now she's got a grown up duvet I can't wait for her new bed to arrive!

Where are two story tellers here. The first one is the man sitting on the white chair to the left. The second is in the middle of the big group men. As you can see, the man to the left did not tell a very exciting story... Djemma el Fna, Marrakech, Morocco.
12 Moves
Video stills from SDNA's film “The story of Robert Fletcher” commissioned by Dancefest for 12 Moves. The film unfolds the story of an obsessive Victorian Collector who finds and traps six magical water creatures. These Creaturae Aquae cast a spell on Worcestershire’s inhabitants. Only a dance routine performed by a very large number of people has the power to release the water creatures and bring happiness back to the county.
The film contains the work of hundreds of Worcestershire dancers.
12 Moves has been the biggest dance project to have ever taken place in Worcershire, touching the lives of thousands of people. From community classes to spectacular outdoor events, 12 Moves got Worcestershire dancing!
SDNA were appointed as Artistic Directors of 12 Moves, to bring a fresh digital perspective to this ambitious dance project.
Over 6400 people have witnessed 12 Moves events, and nearly 4000 people have participated in activities that included guerilla projections, flash mobs, interactive installations, shop window performances and a large scale outdoor event.
12 moves creative team included composer Mira Calix (Warp Records), choreographer Jennifer Irons (ironINC Dance), code master Evan Raskob, dramaturg Stephen Wilson and costume designer Julia Kalache.
