Read Across America is not just a celebration for schools, it's a nationwide celebration that touches every community. From daycare centers to libraries and recreation centers, everyone is joining in on the fun!
At one daycare, our littlest learners are spent the day exploring the pages of their favorite books and discovering new stories to share with their friends.
Meanwhile, at a local library, families gathered to participate in a special story time, reading challenges, and games. Libraries have been decorated with colorful banners and posters, inviting readers of all ages to come in and explore the endless possibilities of reading.
And over at the recreation center, kids are taking a break from sports and games to join in on the fun. The center has set up reading corners, book swaps, and encouraging kids to explore new stories and have fun while doing it.
No matter where you go in our community today, the joy of reading is in the air. As we celebrate Read Across America, we're reminded of the power of books to inspire, educate, and connect us all. So let's pick up a book, share a story, and celebrate the magic of reading together!

Great day over the Christmas break wandering through Brisbane to see what photographic delights it might reveal.
Christie really did a great job talking with the media. One of the media asked her about skin-care in these winter conditions, and she started talking about moisturizers & SPFs, but then at the end she asked "Please make sure your stories are about the environment, and not cosmetics, OK?".
Christie is so real.

So how did the yardangs at Coyote Mojave Dry Lake get there.
Yardangs are erosional features. They formed AFTER something got deposited, then partially eroded away.
The story begins with blowing dune sands becoming deposited in the northern part of the Coyote Dry Lake basin. There were probably sand dunes marching across this section of the basin, much like the dunes at Nipomo on the Lompoc Peninsula or the barchans near the Salton Sea. The dunes paved across the landscape, with each dune leaving a layer of sand behind as it marched across. Eventually, vegetation colonizes the dune. (Dunes sands are great at holding water, so if a plant can get roots down into it, it's a great environment.) The vegetation stabilizes the dune from futher movement.
As the dune sits there, water percolates through from rain. Tiny grains of salts that were blown in as part of the dune materials dissolve, and eventually reprecipitate deeper in the dune. The salts help bridge the dune sand grains and make the sands more cohesive. If the vegetation dies off (fire, prolonged drought, etc.), the dune sands are no longer stabilized and blow away revealing the hardened core. The dune sand core still shows the layers of sand grains that were deposited long ago. The hardened grains are more resistant to erosion than loose sands and can hold a steep slope like small cliffs. Blowing and bouncing sand grains chip away at the front of the remnant core, undercutting it from the base and making small blocks fall from the cliff. The windward front of the core becomes blunted from erosion and undercutting, and the characteristic shape of the yardang is created.
If this erosion continues, eventually the scouring and erosion will remove the remnant. However, if vegetation is able to recolonize the yardang (from sand trapped in pockets), then it can trap additional sand and the sand can protect the yardang from furhter erosion. A sand covered hump results, with hardened core poking out from more sand free areas. If the vegetation is removed, the protective sand cover will once again be removed, and erosion will start resume.
Eventually, the hardened core will be removed and the released sands will be blown downwind as part of the sediment cycle of the Mojave.

"I've known since I was born that my one purpose in life was to play music. I started playing the guitar when I was eight years old. The most memorable moment in my life was when my son Jonas was born. Also, my most favorite gig that I have ever played was when I played live with my son for the first time professionally. I have always wanted to go visit Prague. Willie Nelson's Farm Aid has been the one gig that I have always dreamed of playing." -Mike Langley
EVENT ON MADISON AVENUE
We have lithographs by Toulouse-Lautrec, Ronald Searle, and Auguste Renoir. There is a story about how we acquired them.
In November 1968 we returned from a trip to Europe and still had unused traveler's checks, a situation requiring immediate action. We decided on a stroll down Madison Avenae to find art work that might not exceed the value of the checks. (Hah!) We hadn't gone very far when I saw a drawing of a little girl in a shop window; it was love at first sight; I just had to have her. Mom agreed.
Then we noticed the name of the shop: Far Gallery. It was owned by Murray Roth and Herman Wechsler, friends of Paul Levenson, (married to Mom’s sister Anne), when he worked at Macy’s in New York, who had told us to look them up. We introduced ourselves, and the fun began: 1. The little "girl" was Claude Renoir, grandson of the famous artist; 2. The "drawing" was a lithograph by Claude's grandpa; 3. Our new friends brought out the Toulouse-Lautrecs; I almost exploded with excitement, travelers checks out of mind; 4. Mom saw the Searle lithograph (it is in her bedroom) and giggled with joy; 5. One of the owners then gave us a book, a veritable encyclopedia explaining the various ways in which prints are made. He autographed it; 6. We bought the Searle, the Renoir and two Toulouse-Lautrecs, arranged to have them framed and shipped with the book.
In the spring of 1969 the gallery tempted us with several lithographs; we opted for two more Toulouse-Lautrecs.
We have never tired of our selections; we think the frames and artwork are exquisite. They are a great joy; when Mom was more mobile, she would go through the living room during the day just to enjoy our gifts to ourselves. With a photographer’s eye, I marvel at the simplicity of lines and the unusual use of light by the artistes. The lithographs have not increased one whit in value since we bought them; no matter, we love them more and more as time passes.
