Building accurate, intricate computer models that allow scientists and stakeholders to understand the interplay between Earth, water, clouds, and atmosphere is what Dr. Ruby Leung does at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. She conducts cutting-edge research and refines models that are vital to predicting climate and understanding the impact of energy policies, new technologies, and our changing climate. As an example, to better simulate climate change effects on hydrologic conditions over mountain watersheds, she developed a unique framework for modeling the regional coupled atmosphere and terrestrial systems. She also applies regional climate models to study hydroclimate processes and climate extremes, and the aerosol effects on regional climate and hydrological cycle. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in atmospheric science from Texas A&M University. She earned a bachelor's degree in physics and statistics from Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she was the only woman in her graduating class of the physics department. Ruby is an outstanding mentor. She works closely with early career scientists and provides them with opportunities to develop new ideas and excel. She also participates as a mentor to many people through the lab's scientist and engineer development program.

Late Friday night, 40 high school girls arrived at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for a STEM-themed sleepover, ready to learn about careers in Science, technology, engineering and math. The educational event offered young women a chance to meet working female scientists and to discover opportunities for women in STEM-related professions.

The teens kicked off the third annual STEM Girls Night In with an astronaut Q&A, talks from female scientists across disciplines and a collection of hands-on activities. The night culminated in a three-hour Mars rover competition and concluded with a late-night showing of “Hidden Figures.”

The perennating organs of the potato (Solanum tuberosum) are underground tubers, which are swollen stems acting as food stores. Originally from the lower Andes in South America, this plant has been exploited in Europe as a food source since the 15th Century, owing to the high starch content and good keeping qualities of the tubers.

This image shows an old tuber, ready for planting. Shoots are growing from the tuber and these shoots have adventitious roots arising from the stem nodes. The shoots have grown in the dark and are etiolated (thin and elongated) and show chlorosis (lack of chlorophyll). Gardeners call the shoots ‘chits’.

The mature tuber is approximately 10 cm long.

Ritimukta Sarangi is a Staff Scientist for the Structural Molecular Biology Division at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. She has held this position for three years, working on the design and development of a high-energy beamline with simultaneous polarized single-crystal X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography capabilities. She began this work as an Associate Staff Scientist in 2007, upon her graduation from Stanford University with a Ph.D. in Chemistry. Ritimukta earned her M.Sc. in Chemistry from the India Institute of Technology in 2001, and her B.Sc. in Chemistry with a minor in Physics and Mathematics from Saint Xavier’s College in Kolkata, India. She mentors high school students in Stanford’s RISE program, is a lecturer at the Annual School of Synchrotron Radiation at SSRL, two summer school programs at SSRL, and is a member of several professional organizations. Ritimukta has lectured all over the world, and holds awards from Stanford, Q2XAFS, SLAC, and others.

Discovery STEM Event at Banneker Middle School. by Jay Baker at Montgomery Co., MD.

Panehesy held the title of ‘Chief Servitor of the Aten in Akhetaten’. His tomb is another of the better decorated of the North Tombs, with superb reliefs and a lot of remaining colour. It is situated at the far southern end of the North Tombs group and was at one re-time used as a Coptic church. The decorated façade of the tomb is better preserved than in the other Amarna tombs, showing scenes of the royal family worshipping the Aten with attendant dwarves. In the entrance corridor the King and Queen are shown wearing elaborate crowns, and include a depiction of Mutnodjmet, Nefertiti’s sister, although damaged.

October 10 2008 - I just recently heard it closed permanently. It makes me quite sad to hear that. Many of my best Sundays started here.

The stem was fabricated with Apitong, and was 3 sawn pieces and glued. We considered a laminated stem, but went with the sawn approach for general looks. Eric applied his mast step design, as the original design left a void.

Finally a little progress after several weeks out on a mission project.. Had the RV parked on the bank of the Chesapeake Bay? A Hardship! NO BOAT! But got back and installed the stem reinforcement. Here is the additional wood reinforcemetn that backs up the bow.

Stem rot caused by Helminthosporium sigmoideum ( Leptosphaeria salvinii or Magnaporthe salvinii

) (Photo 80) — Infection usually occurs near

the waterline, entering through wounds and injuries.

It starts as blackish, dark, irregular lesions on

the outer leaf sheath and gradually enlarges.

Eventually, the fungus penetrates into the culm

and weakens the stems and leads to lodging

If I recall correctly, this is a stir-fry of green or chilly pepper stems or petioles.
