Late Friday night, 40 high school girls arrived at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for a STEM-themed sleepover, ready to learn about careers in Science, technology, engineering and math. The educational event offered young women a chance to meet working female scientists and to discover opportunities for women in STEM-related professions.
The teens kicked off the third annual STEM Girls Night In with an astronaut Q&A, talks from female scientists across disciplines and a collection of hands-on activities. The night culminated in a three-hour Mars rover competition and concluded with a late-night showing of “Hidden Figures.”

Section of a Selaginella stem. The vascular tissues are suspended in a central air-filled canal by trabeculae - structures formed of elongated endodermal cells. Detail of the vascular tissues.
Stem rot caused by Helminthosporium sigmoideum ( Leptosphaeria salvinii or Magnaporthe salvinii
) (Photo 80) — Infection usually occurs near
the waterline, entering through wounds and injuries.
It starts as blackish, dark, irregular lesions on
the outer leaf sheath and gradually enlarges.
Eventually, the fungus penetrates into the culm
and weakens the stems and leads to lodging
(Photo 81).

Cause: Undetermined, but associated with ascomycete fungus and general tree decline | Location: Island of Hawaii (i.e., the Big Island)
Stems formed in 2011 with the idea of seeking a new relationship between experimental guitar and classical instruments, to create music with the energy of rock music but with elongated and intense structures of Western and Indian classical music.
To date the band have released one E.P - The 20 minute long track 'Only When all is broken can the truth be seen' and an album 'POLEMICS'. The artwork of both CD's are translucent layered images printed on tracing paper.
In 2013 they embarked on a successful 15 date tour of Europe to promote the album 'POLEMICS' which further developed their following, based around their passionate and intense live performances.
The name Stems is derived from the idea of roots diverging to produce unique strands, all of which are bound to a central body.
Common name
Yellow stem borer (YSB), White stem borer (WSB), Striped stem borer (SSB), Gold-fringed stem borer, Dark-headed stem borer, Pink stem borer
Stem borers Chilo suppressalis (striped) (Photo
8), C. polychrysus(dark-headed) (Photo 9), Rupela albinella (South American white) (Photo 10), Scirpophaga incertulas (yellow) (Photo II), S. innotata (white), and Sesamia inferens (pink) — Damage results from larvae feeding within the
stem, severing the vascular system. Deadheart is
damage to the tiller before flowering. When dam-
age occurs before maximum tillering, the plant
partially compensates by producing additional
tillers.

Recognizing the growing need for college graduates from the fields of science, health science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Bloomsburg University's College of Science and Technology is establishing a regional center for math and science education to address this need through a wide range of programming. bloomu.edu/stem
This wonderful dress is part of an exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre, entitled The Beauty of Stem Cells - Fashion Inspired by Stem Cell Research. Unfortunately, I completely failed to photograph much else of it, but there were several other unusual pieces of clothing, and a series of rather nice photomicrographs by Craig Aarts and Radha Chaddah of the Stem Cell Network.
I also completely neglected to record who designed this elegant gown, but it was one of the following students of the fashion program at the RCC Institute of Technology in Toronto:
Muhammad Alamgir / Gulmairam Amankogoeva / Hilary Birkenshaw / Elissa Contino / Liliane Fotso / Julie Hodge / Lena Meier / Sveta Shvedenkova
I'm going to have to get back to this, I think. The exhibit and many other stem cell-related things are on until October the first. More info at bit.ly/rpb68Q and bit.ly/naZGHu.
