Teachers prepare to demonstrate the projects they built for the Rocketry Engineering Design Challenge during the 2017 GE Foundation High School STEM Integration Conference at the Center for Space Education at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. High school teachers from across the country took part in the week-long conference, which is designed to explore effective ways for teachers, schools and districts from across the country to integrate STEM throughout the curriculum. The conference is a partnership between GE Foundation and the National Science Teachers Association. Photo credit: NASA/Chris Chamberland
Probably a good thing they anodized these stems. You just want to... fondle... that smooth shape.

Building accurate, intricate computer models that allow scientists and stakeholders to understand the interplay between Earth, water, clouds, and atmosphere is what Dr. Ruby Leung does at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. She conducts cutting-edge research and refines models that are vital to predicting climate and understanding the impact of energy policies, new technologies, and our changing climate. As an example, to better simulate climate change effects on hydrologic conditions over mountain watersheds, she developed a unique framework for modeling the regional coupled atmosphere and terrestrial systems. She also applies regional climate models to study hydroclimate processes and climate extremes, and the aerosol effects on regional climate and hydrological cycle. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in atmospheric science from Texas A&M University. She earned a bachelor's degree in physics and statistics from Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she was the only woman in her graduating class of the physics department. Ruby is an outstanding mentor. She works closely with early career scientists and provides them with opportunities to develop new ideas and excel. She also participates as a mentor to many people through the lab's scientist and engineer development program.

I was able to quickly get 13 Technic Turnables (48452cx1) in a large cup and back filled with some random pieces. I probably could've got 14.
Photomicrograph of a Dandelion stem cross section. This is my first attempt at histological specimen preparation. Next time I need to use a thinner layer of Meyer's Albumin as it took up some of the stain.
Bright field micrograph created using a Sony NEX 5N on a Nikon SM inverted microscope with a Zeiss 2.5X objective, 4X eyepiece and a Leica MICAS microscope adapter with a 2/3X reducer.

Wheat stem with pustules caused by stem rust (Puccinia graminis). These are dark reddish brown, contain masses of urediospores, and may occur on both sides of the leaves, on the stems, and on the spikes.

The stem was fabricated with Apitong, and was 3 sawn pieces and glued. We considered a laminated stem, but went with the sawn approach for general looks. Eric applied his mast step design, as the original design left a void.
Stem rot caused by Helminthosporium sigmoideum ( Leptosphaeria salvinii or Magnaporthe salvinii
) (Photo 80) — Infection usually occurs near
the waterline, entering through wounds and injuries.
It starts as blackish, dark, irregular lesions on
the outer leaf sheath and gradually enlarges.
Eventually, the fungus penetrates into the culm
and weakens the stems and leads to lodging
