October 10 2008 - I just recently heard it closed permanently. It makes me quite sad to hear that. Many of my best Sundays started here.

Finally a little progress after several weeks out on a mission project.. Had the RV parked on the bank of the Chesapeake Bay? A Hardship! NO BOAT! But got back and installed the stem reinforcement. Here is the additional wood reinforcemetn that backs up the bow.
Late Friday night, 40 high school girls arrived at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for a STEM-themed sleepover, ready to learn about careers in Science, technology, engineering and math. The educational event offered young women a chance to meet working female scientists and to discover opportunities for women in STEM-related professions.
The teens kicked off the third annual STEM Girls Night In with an astronaut Q&A, talks from female scientists across disciplines and a collection of hands-on activities. The night culminated in a three-hour Mars rover competition and concluded with a late-night showing of “Hidden Figures.”

The image shows details of plants of Common Reed (Phragmites australis) growing above high water mark on a beach in Cornwall.
Rhizomes are horizontal underground stems. In the first image, spring tides have washed away the sand that originally covered the base of the plant and the rhizomes can be seen. These stems act as a food store as well as a means of vegetative reproduction.
In this image you can see that there is a constriction in the rhizome – a node – from which a leafy shoot and adventitious roots arise.
The section of rhizome is approximately 10 cm long.

cross section: Elodea stem
common name water weed
magnification: 100x
Berkshire Community College Bioscience Image Library
Submerged hydrophytes like Elodea show numerous adaptations to an aquatic life. Notably there are no internal support tissues like collenchyma or sclerenchyma. The stem is entirely support by the water.
The epidermis is uniseriate and photosynthetic with a thin to non-existent cuticle and scattered stomata.
The bulk of the stem is occupied by a cortex that consists of a narrow outer zone of densely packed parenchyma cells and a large inner zone of aerenchyma with large radially arranged air pockets. The cells of the entire cortex contain abundant chloroplasts.
Vascular tissues are limited to the central stele and show no clear differentiation into xylem and phloem. In some specimens a single xylem vessel may be seen in the center of the stele.
A large air cavity occupies the center of the stele.

While in Western cultures, people would eat beans, peas and green peppers or chilly peppers, the Chinese also cook the stems of a great many vegetables in addition to the fruits.
If I recall correctly, this is a stir-fry of green or chilly pepper stems or petioles.

Stems formed in 2011 with the idea of seeking a new relationship between experimental guitar and classical instruments, to create music with the energy of rock music but with elongated and intense structures of Western and Indian classical music.
To date the band have released one E.P - The 20 minute long track 'Only When all is broken can the truth be seen' and an album 'POLEMICS'. The artwork of both CD's are translucent layered images printed on tracing paper.
In 2013 they embarked on a successful 15 date tour of Europe to promote the album 'POLEMICS' which further developed their following, based around their passionate and intense live performances.
The name Stems is derived from the idea of roots diverging to produce unique strands, all of which are bound to a central body.
Recognizing the growing need for college graduates from the fields of science, health science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Bloomsburg University's College of Science and Technology is establishing a regional center for math and science education to address this need through a wide range of programming. bloomu.edu/stem
