Late Friday night, almost 50 students from Maryland and Virginia arrived at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for a STEM-themed sleepover, ready to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
The educational event, which follows the success of our Girls Night In held in November, offered young men a chance to meet working scientists and engineers and to discover opportunities in STEM-related professions. In addition to meeting NASA scientists and engineers, students also met Chris Scolese (Director of Goddard Space Flight Center), Clayton Turner (Deputy Director, Langley Research Center), and former NASA Astronaut, Fred Gregory.

Forgive my disappearance. I've been _____________ !
I do such things in true life too, quickly walk away, disappear into an unoccupied room if the one I have been occupying becomes too crowded with people. I get irritated with phone conversations that go on and on -- I have been known to hand over a telephone to whomever is standing near to me, without warning to the caller. But that is a bad habit I picked up later in life. My sister says that it is rude. And it is. Yet, it is no more rude than someone continuing to talk after having been told that (1) "I'm busy right now" or that (2) "I'm not in the mood to talk" or "I've nothing to chat about" . . . or (3) "I'm painting" or "reading." Sometimes I let the phone ring into voicemail. I figured if its important, I will be texted.
I am now on Facebook though I kinda swore that I wouldn't bother setting up an account there . . . EVER! But at a memorial service for a dear cousin who passed away in July, familiars said it would be a great way for us to stay connected and arrange get-togethers. So I signed up even though I haven't written anything, I do read and follow what others are doing. And I've found lots of old friends who I'd lost touch with in this great big real world as well as relatives, near and far. Befriend me if you are there! I'm considering Twitter but that would only be to promote my next project.

This was a floral arrangement in the making! There were so many beautiful wild flowers along the road in Tennessee. We have nothing like this in my end of the world, so to me it was fascinating.

Rushes are monocots that live in wetlands such as bogs and marshes, and in damp woodlands. This section shows part of a stem of a Rush (Juncus sp.). Plants that are adapted to live in water or wet conditions are known as hydrophytes.
The stem is hollow and contains star-shaped (stellate) cells in a tissue called aerenchyma. The abundant air spaces in aerenchyma allow air to reach the root systems, which are usually submerged in waterlogged soil.
The stem is photosynthetic, with palisade tissue underneath the epidermis, interspersed with groups of fibres (red). Below this cortex are the scattered vascular bundles typical of a monocot.
The diameter of the large vascular bundle is about 170 µm.

Made in Toledo, this cleverly designed stem can be flipped or rotated to provide four different bar height positions. An interesting side note of this stem is that it was standard equipment on Hearsey Special bicycles of Indianapolis. The founder of Hearsey Bicycles, H. T. Hearsey was the individual who entered Major Taylor in his first race in 1893 from Indianapolis to Matthews.
Creativity, insight, and application are the hallmarks of Dr. Xin Sun’s applied mechanics and computational materials research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Her advances in lightweight and high-strength materials (including steels) and modeling are vital to energy efficiency and renewable energy and have led to notable weight savings in the U.S. automotive industry. Xin is developing simulation and modeling capabilities for solid oxide fuel cells. Her modeling of physics properties are included as part of the solid oxide fuel cell multiphysics modeling code, or SOFC-MP, a commercial software tool, developed at PNNL, used by fuel cell developers. She also uses the continuum damage mechanics model, developed under DOE-funded programs, to understand fracture mechanisms behind transparent armor for the U.S. Army—work that may enable more resilient battlefield vehicles. A prolific contributor to the scientific community, Xin is on the ISRN Mechanical Engineering editorial board and serves as an associate editor on the ASME Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering and American Welding Society Welding Journal. She also mentors staff and interns at PNNL and Washington State University, where she is a mechanical and materials engineering professor. Xin earned a naval architecture and ocean engineering undergraduate degree from China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In only five years, she earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s and doctorate in naval architecture and marine engineering, all from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

The perennating organs of the Potato (Solanum tuberosum) are underground tubers, which are swollen stems acting as food stores. Originally from the lower Andes in South America, this plant has been exploited in Europe as a food source since the 15th Century, owing to the high starch content and good keeping qualities of the tubers.

The largest tuber is approximately 2 cm across.
