I found this sign kind of ironic...
being that I photographed it in the window of an art gallery from the sidewalk.
The public sidewalk that belongs to all the people of Chicago to do on it whatever they wish that is not specifically prohibited by statute or reasoned by the police to be 'disturbing the peace.'
What I find ironic about this sign is that it specifically mentions the 'artist's' right to 'take action on any piracy and copyright infringement' while it completely tramples upon my right to take a picture of anything that I can see from the sidewalk.
Even more so... the 'artist' has proclaimed himself... or herself... to have the power to 'permit' me to do what is my right on that sidewalk.
I don't know when they became 'king' but it always strikes me as funny when those demanding some right for themselves deny me of what is a right of mine.
You know those people who ask you to show you your receipt and what's in your bag when you leave a store?
What they're asking you to do is give up one of your rights...
the right to privacy in your person... to be free from unreasonable search and seizure.
I NEVER give up a right.
You shouldn't either.
I never let them look in my bag and I never show them my receipt.
I just keep on walking...
sometimes they follow me or say something to me...
but gahd I'm always just secretly hoping that they touch me... or detain me.
If they had probable cause to believe that I stole something then they would have the right to detain me until the police come and possibly even search me.
Once I pay for the stuff at the cash register... title and ownership of it is transferred to ME.
'No you can't look through my bag.'
My kids kinda hate that I do that... they're embarrassed by it and that's precisely why I will never give up a right in front of them.
Because they're watching.
Are we in this country a 'free people?'
Didn't a lot of people make some pretty deep sacrifices so that we might have the rights that we have?
Wouldn't it be a dishonor to them and their sacrifices to just give up these rights?
I will always photograph a sign that says that I cannot photograph it when indeed I have a right to.
I could show you this 'artists' work too... without violating their copyright...
but it's not that good.
Maybe I was just 'tainted' by the 'artist's' attitude... I mean come on... a freakin' 'artist' trying to trample on my rights!
You can't be an artist in my opinion if you do that.
You've become a 'fascist.'
Don't get me wrong... I'm completely against copyright infringement... I just busted my kid for downloading music without paying for it...
artists deserve fair compensation for their work.
But I'm not going to let anyone take away a single right of mine.
If people do this... giving up their rights so easily then those whose interests contradict our rights will try and in some cases succeed in denying us the rights that we have as a free people.
I've often been called a 'nitpicker' for this belief.
Mostly by my kids.
When I was stopped at a roadside checkpoint and the officer looked inside my car to see if me and my passengers were wearing seat belts I chastised him...
I don't feel he had a right to do that.
He had no 'probable cause' to believe that I wasn't wearing a seat belt.
The founders of our country were sick of the British doing that to us.
Now my kids point out those checkpoints from a mile away begging me to drive around them.
They don't wanna sit there while I let the cop know how I feel... backing up traffic while I refuse to move because I feel like I've got a right to express my opinion to an officer of the law... especially one who I believe is not observing the Constitution when he stops me from going about my business in order to see that I am indeed complying with the state statute to wear my seat belt.
Which of course I was wearing.
Because not wearing a seat belt is stupid.
Don't a free people have a right to be stupid?
... for my hat. Which I lost this morning and am distinctly unhappy about. It was my very favourite and particularly special. This should really be a sad bokeh friday post but it's Thursday so it is good it is greeny in there somewhere. At least curious giraffe here looks pretty nice as he goes searching. Actually, it's a good point. Why aren't giraffes used in missing person searches more often? Or for rescuing kittens out of trees? Fighting fires in tall buildings? Surely we are underusing our longest-necked animal brethren? I shall call the zoo and ask.

Ramshackle corrugated tin, plywood, plastic, pukkah bricks, sheets of asbestos, sweat, toil, people and garbage make Dharavi, just like piles of earth, sand, clay and other materials make ant hills. Dharavi and many other slums like it are nothing but human ant colonies built by legions of our urban poor. They are places which are at same time sombre, moving, joyful and interesting .Push and pull factors, bring people from our villages here everyday in search for something better. They settle here much to the neglect of our apathetic eyes. But under the squalor is great spirit and ingenuity. I went looking for this spirit in this place most people refer to as ‘Asia’s largest slum’ but I would prefer to call the ‘Heart of Mumbai’.

The famous one-legged guard has nabbed a wayward goose and is detaining her in a retaining pond. Retention detention... or something to that effect. As you can see from his plumage (or lack of it) he takes his guard duties VERY seriously. He enjoys "pinning" his captives before "penning" them, if you get my drift. He is a HUGE fan of WWEFLB...
World Wrestling Entertainment For Large Birds.
Here I am, spotlighting a special companion-cum-celeb who was making a first-time-ever visit, who chooses to remain SL-RL-anonymous ;)

One fine March 2018 evening, my old friend Alexander Van Brook brought me to see a most delectable lush jazzy striptease joint.

Little did I know, three years later, I would be convinced by a sassy Belphegor Belgar to take up post behind the bar at this very gentlemen's club.

It took me over two weeks to contemplate on my Pino application, initially for a Dancer position (as I didn't know there were other alternatives such as the Bartender role -- *stares at the mute mannequin that is "Edna" Yui-chan*).
Alas, as I had pontificated multiple times before, 3-5 years back, I really did not want to, nor did I have a good purpose for then, to root myself deeper in my "Second" life than I already have had (?).
After all, how many times would I need the mental clusterfuck of this disorganised, lawless, amoral microcosm of a digital maya -- a result of my intellectual, anthropological, socio-psychological curiosity -- before I'd finally pull the plug for good?
Was there a need to be in SL, for a casual consumer/non-creator of tangible business products like yours truly*, to begin with, at the expense of my freelancing RL time and energy, no less?
Then again, did I really want to be an aimless vagabond, a periodic prodigal visitor of this metaverse, time and again, gathering no digital moss simply for fear of the often touted and misunderstood concept of 'online addiction'?
Also, after all, what is the "new norm" if not for the digital evolution of civilised men?
I must find a way to adapt, to please both my artistic sensibility as well as pragmatic concerns, I thought.
And then, by way of serendipity, I met the rather elusive owner of the current Pino 1971 at the Crazy Dragona.
[2021/04/05 14:17:38] Dame Lilly Noel: yup my friends are here
[2021/04/05 14:24:02] Phoenix Li: That's great
[2021/04/05 14:24:22] Phoenix Li: I always find it cool when we can have a social club where all our friends gather and party regularly
[2021/04/05 14:24:54] Phoenix Li: It's not until recently when I returned to SL about a month back that I started finding or having a 'tribe' haha
[2021/04/06 10:08:53] Dame Lilly Noel: im sure you will be amongst your tribe at Pino :D
Now, it has been a week since my employment at Pino 1971.
I am glad to report that, in spite of all the SL (mis)adventures I have had to rick-roll through to date, Lilly is right.
Pino has been good to me, for me.
In more ways than mere casual, social RP.
Its wonderfully supportive and irreverent yet utterly professional staff, and quirky, stylish regulars quickly became the tribe I had been searching for.
After 12 long years in SL (on and off).
And it all started with a little pinot noir by a kooky little jukebox amid lush burgundy walls three years back, shortly before I took a much-needed prolonged hiatus to restore and resume mental check-and-balance in RL.
And after meeting a few (dozens? LOL ;)) someones I now no longer wish I had known early on from my SL beginnings.
After all, c'est la vie -- everything is a blessing;
the disguise depends on our view.
All for a purpose, with neither reason nor rhyme.
As they say,
never say never.

.. this evening also marked my final hours on Orkney where I spend (almost) four days wandering around, discovering hidden corners and resisting all kind of (Scottish) weather ... ;-)
Finally met up with the awesome Kathy Santana after a few missed attempts. I'm glad we finally got to shoot!
We started off texting/calling each other for a while and just throwing some ideas around. But finally, we linked up & the creative juices started flowing, and we made magic happen~
So stoked on this shot. More coming, just been so busy that I haven't gotten around to editing.
Shooting with her was definitely one of the most fun shoots I've ever been a part of. Her personality is so bubbly & outgoing, and she really has an open mind. Non-stop laughter.

This piece has been languishing in development hell for some time now. It was started in a pique of excitement only to reach this stage - and there it stagnated. Without a single scooby on what to do next there it would remain…
Until I remembered that I work in a partnership and that a problem shared is a problem halved. So it was time to pass it over and see where the other half of id-iom will take it. If you fancy this for your wall as it is then you’d best get in touch pronto as I can see the other half of id-iom cogitating right now about what he can do with it. Stay tuned to see what he manages to pull out of the bag…
Cheers
