Cold morning with fog lifting off the Susquehanna River in Maryland. If you look close the two kayakers there are near a heron that was taking off.
Pretty amazing that the guy fishing there did not move during the sunrise long exposure along the Susquehanna River.
Two Alco C430's have a good roll on WNYP's Farmers Valley job as they cross the NY/PA state line just north of Eldred, Pa. Already being after 4:00 PM in February, the short chase would be over after 20 minutes and 3 shots when they reached the 10mph treed-in branch.
A very unique waterfall! We had a lot of creek crossings while hiking through the canyon. Some areas had nice stepping stones while others were unstable slippery rocks. Quite the adventure!
As things are about to really warm up finally with temperatures heading into the 80 degrees F range next week, winter is a thing of the past.
It did have its pretty moments like this one with the light snow on this pretty scene along the Gunpowder River in Maryland.
Happy Fence Friday too :))
In a "bird-rich" state like Florida, does the commonplace northern mockingbird deserve to reign as the official state bird?
According to the Florida Department of State Division of Historical Resources, the Mockingbird "is a superb songbird and mimic. Its own song has a pleasant lilting sound and is, at times, both varied and repetitive." The bird was put in place in 1927 under Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 3. The bird won over the Legislature in part because "the melody of its music has delighted the heart of residents and visitors to Florida from the days of the rugged pioneer to the present comer."
Someone else once wrote. "I am finishing this post the next day because I had to go buy a new computer after I threw my last one out the window when I read that Florida's state bird was the northern mockingbird. I cannot think of a more pathetic choice for one of the most bird-rich states in the nation. What's their state beverage, a half-glass of warm tap water?"
"The fact stands that four other states have the same official bird; Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. It's as overused as the northern cardinal (five states) and the western meadowlark (six states), and some make the convincing argument that every state should have its own bird."
Who would have ever "thunk" the Mockingbird could stir up so much controversy. The debate still "rages"!
I found this controversial little one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida preparing to share its pleasant lifting sound to the world.
Amtrak's westbound Shenandoah has just departed the Grafton West Virginia station stop and the few passengers on board are getting a view of the all the railroad infrastructure that was still in place in 1977. that included D Tower that the train had just passed, the coaling tower, and the roundhouse that provided support for part of the foot bridge that this shot was taken off of. Those are all no longer but I read that the station and hotel are awaiting restoration. There were only 25 of the GE P30CH's in Amtrak's fleet. I suspect that by this time in 1977, there weren't enough F40's to go around and they needed HEP for the Amfleet coaches.
About an hour after sunset along the Gunpowder Falls River looking back at the Route 1 crossing of the river. This exposure helps brighten the otherwise night view ... had to walk out of here under flashlight.
Montpelier, Vermont
Fun fact: Montpelier is the only state capital city in the U.S. without a McDonald's restaurant. Thanks, Lois, for that information.
Glazing in the trees and sections of the river freezing over as well. Captured while hiking around in Gunpowder Falls State Park.
Delaware Legislative Hall building in Dover, Delaware
Delaware Legislative Hall is the state capitol building of Delaware located in the state capital city of Dover on Legislative Avenue that houses the chambers and offices of the Delaware General Assembly. Front View.
I'd already gone up the Empire State itself and World Trade Centre when some local photographers I met said the best views of Manhattan were up the Rockefeller Centre. I didn't plan going up that as well but they were right. It's only a short distance from the Empire State and gave a spectacular view at twilight as it light up. The new World Trade Centre (or Freedom Tower) is in the background.
They didn't allow tripods up there so this is hand-holding. Just about got away with it.
