2020 one photo each day

52 weeks the 2020 Edition -stars. As this is the brightest night in the year there are no start to be seen in the sky here, not even at midnight.

We have had some nice clear skies in Scotland last few days so decided to do a few trips up north in the car. First up this was a single exposure of the night sky at Drymen. Hope everyone had a good new year.

... of the floral variety. Shooting stars are my favorite wildflowers. They are essentially primroses with reflexed petals. They were previously placed in their own genus (Dodecatheon) based on this remarkable floral trait, but have recently been put back into the primrose group (Primula).

The petal positioning of shooting stars would seem to hinder pollinators from landing on the flower. However they rely on a "buzz" pollination strategy, where vibration of the pollinator's (usually bumble bees) flight muscles causes tightly held pollen to fall off the anthers and land on the legs and body of the pollinator or directly on to the stigma of the same flower. Buzz pollination occurs in other species with similar flower morphology, such as some plants in the tomato family.

as a satellite straight lines itself under the milky way, it reminds me so much of drawing on a old Etch -A- Sketch. With precise turning of the left and right knobs, one could create a perfect diagonal line, much like this satellite in orbit. I'm not saying that satellites are controlled by some dude with his hands on the knobs of this red framed device, but if one day I look up and see satellites zig-zagging in rapid succession...well maybe...just saying.

I love the stars. Because they do not judge anyone.”

Had a great time in Noumea a couple of weeks back and even got some shots in as well.

The Big Dipper and Little Dipper are asterisms (grouping of stars) in the sky that are not constellations. The Big and Little Dippers are perhaps the most recognizable asterism in the sky, serving as a guidepost for the northerly direction and one's latitude. In this image, the dippers are low near the horizon because I took this image in central Thailand at about 13 degrees north latitude. The North Star is therefore about 13 degrees above the north horizon point.
