Thank you for stopping by !!

I think I'm starting to become addicted to this monotone processing!

This time a darker blend of sepia with a more prominent brown colouring thrown in.

Many thanks to Thomas Shellberg for the original photo. A good use of wide aperture we can see that the edges of the land area are slightly blurred, which makes the eye focus more on the night sky. However on the flip side for my tastes I'd probably prefer the foreground to be sharper. Either way a nice composition.

Weisst du, wieviel Sternlein stehen an dem blauen Himmelszelt?🎵

Magnolia Stellata.

This little tree is my favourite magnolia with its profusion of bright white, star-shaped (which is what the stellata bit means) flowers. It’s gorgeous.

There is a pink version of the stellata too, but that is rarer and not as pretty in my view.

As I have discovered they are difficult to photograph creatively. My neighbour has one in his front garden and graciously allows me to try each year! The problem is that as a macro the flowers interfere with each other’s long petals, and if you step back it’s difficult to capture the impression of this attractive plant.

This was taken at the end of March just before a sharp frost annihilated all the magnolia flowers in the village.

Magnolias are an ancient family of plants going back to dinosaur times. Originally, it is thought, they were pollinated by beetles. The flower buds have a thick outer cover to protect them from the beasts before they are ready, quite unlike the sepals of modern flowers. Quite obligingly there was a beetle (or two) on this flower, though I think it’s a more modern one :)

Processed for the Smile on Saturday Natural White theme today. It would also work in B&W I think, but as the theme was on the colour white I did it in colour!

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Smile on Saturday :)

[Monopod; natural daylight.

Developed in Capture One reducing clarity to add softness and increasing structure.

Inpainted in Affinity to remove damage; rotated and cropped (which was a tricky decision - went for a widescreen crop on the thirds intersection).

In Nik Viveza a bit of selective work to reduce the dominance of the background, and to add structure to the centre bit.

In Nik Color Efex a compendium of filters including Neutralise White (good for this type of pic), Pro Contrast, Glamour Glow, Blur vignette and light vignette both centred on the business bit of the flower.

Back in Affinity sharpened with USM and a bit of Clarity to get the petal textures back a bit; finally some denoising (an afterthought :( ).]

Happy Holidays!!!

It was supposed to have been a triple threat night; The Milky Way, a moon-rise over the ocean and then a glorious beach sunrise. What I got was CLOUDS. Clouds. Clouds (and mist). ALL weekend.

This noisy shot of the Bodie Island Lighthouse was about all I could get from a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I could not see my hands in front of me, except for when the light from the lighthouse came around. I used a small flashlight during the exposure to illuminate the lighthouse. An amateur effort at best, but fun to experiment with.

An area with low light pollution; I will be visiting again in hopes of better shots.

Thought I'd give astrophotography a go for the first time the other night, hasn't turned out great but I'm keen to have another go :) This was shot on the beach at Cuckmere Haven about an hour and a half after sunset. Due to the extremely high ISO I used the picture was very grainy, so I have used noise reduction software to help with that. However that has meant that some of the fainter stars are no longer visible. Any tips of further astrophotography, or location ideas would be much appreciated.

♫ Open up your starry eyes

So bright, so high, let's take our time

All day and all night, 'til sunrise

Open up your starry eyes

So bright, so high, don't say goodbye

All day and all night, 'til sunrise

Open up your starry eyes ♫

I was frustrated at the end of the trip because nights at Pantanal are awesome but there was a jaguar around - the first night it was too close when we were taking night shots. At the last day my friend Jose Sena helped me to get a decent shot (the lenses is his) but inside the house, so we could not avoid the fence...

Good evening! Wishing everyone a nice weekend!

Thanks a lot for your visits, comments, faves, invites, etc. Very much appreciated!

Allium flower (Southampton, England)

So we woke up at 3:30AM, took the 40mins drive to the Maroon Bells. The posted sign on the road there warned us that reservation is required, of course we did not know that (duh). Managed to get on the World Wide Web (lolz) to realize that booking is completely full for the next several weeks. Oh well, we pushed on since no one was at the gate (of course, it only slightly passed 4AM 😇). We really do want to follow the rule if we would have known sooner.

None of us was there before and we could not figure out how to get to the lake in pitch black 25F degree moonless night. Luckily another car pulled up and the gentlemen agreed to lead us there. He huddled us up, whispering "I've been to this place for 45 years, it's a sacred place, please do not speak loudly as it can disturb the active wildlife at this hour and please only shine the flashlight down toward the dirt road" - Yes sir..........we moved on.

Many clicks later, the sun was finally up, we finished what we set out for. Walked back to the car, and there, the park ranger was waiting........$130 fine later 🍁🍂. it is well worthed 😍
