A view along Stapleton Road, Bristol, Thursday 24th February 1972. I've had an 'orrible dim, scuffed-looking version of this photo kicking about in an obscure purlieus of my external hard drive for a long time. Yesterday I came across the negative and saw that it was quite dirty. A five minute soak in a solution of Photo-Flo, and a wipe with a shammy have brought it up to Flickrworthy condition.

I suppose the cars visible here would now be regarded as "classic", but to me they look only slightly old-fashioned. The days of small local shops like these were numbered. By now most people did most of their shopping in supermarkets. The M32 motorway would soon draw off Stapleton Road's traffic and what remained would be sent up to the Lawrence Hill roundabout along the dual-carriageway Easton Way. With the demolition of all the housing in Easton, half the catchment area of the shops had disappeared. Already there seems to have been ("Machine Rentals") an outbreak of non-shops, and there are few potential customers about. The south side of the road had been demolished and I took the photo pre-emptively, expecting the north side to follow. In fact it survived and remains intact. I am not quite sure what was happening in the foreground. I think the tower blocks off left had been standing for some years. Perhaps they were finishing off with a bit of landscaping.

The first turning, where the canvas shop blinds are, must be Beaumont Street. Further along is the entrance to Armoury Square, with the Armoury Tavern on the corner. Dimly visible where the edge clarity of my Coronet Cub's All-Distance F10 lens begins to deteriorate, is Clark Street.

Out chasing the 2015 Kentucky Derby Special Trains on a splendid spring morning for KY Derby 141.

Here's the CSX/Governor's train headed west to famed Churchill Downs crossing Stapleton Road in Shelby County, KY.

Stapleton Road station, 05/08. The fenced platform face on the right once served one of two lines (with another platform beyond) and the two lines are to be retsored in 2016. Scanned slide taken with a Nikon F65D.

Stapleton cay

Loved this reef with a well-developed grassy sand cay inhabited by thousands of marine birds.

. An amazing sight watching them buzz around their eggs and chicks like a hive of swarming bees.

Sooty, Crested & Caspian Terns, Booby's, gulls, some tropical birds, and 14 Frigates. We were particularly fascinated watching the Frigates ply their nasty trade of harassment and thievery, still, that's the way they have evolved and they are beautiful birds with superb aerial skills. The common silver gulls were the biggest danger for the Terns and Boobies. Any little space between a nesting bird and an egg and kiss your egg goodbye mum ...the gulls pounced so quickly it was scary. Being a spectator to the whole bird Ecosystem felt special. Also enjoyed some beautiful snorkels ( checked out the area for crocs first) around the shallows, even in a meter or 2 of water there was a huge ray, several turtles, and a grey whaler to keep us entertained. The anchorage was just ok in 15-20 knots and we are able to drop anchor in 5 me about 100 me of the shore.

Looking north at what used to be the slow lines just north of Stapleton Road station. The railway bridge crossed the A432 at this point.

The bridges were later removed.

Historical postcard. Stapleton is now closed, and mostly demolished.

super-modernist rowhouses from $500s. Wandered inside the models ("Guggenheim" and "Pompidou"), and they're almost laughably decked out inside -- a steel-surfaced kitchen island as big as the California King platform bed upstairs. (Felt too uncomfortable photographing inside, though, even though the sales agent was nowhere to be seen.) The designers combined the obvious DWR catalog references with the standard model-home sense of Going Way Over The Top. Weird. They do all have "rooftop" decks with gas fireplaces, though, which had nice views. In fact, one home had four gas fireplaces. Again, photos to come

(Note: it really did just rain. I never understood why, but California real estate photos always have wet pavements.)

This distinctive house was built for banker William H. Ludlam (1866–1944). He lived here with his wife Fannie until his death. James Whitford designed the enclosed wrap-around porch in 1922.

Great show in Rogers AR Amphitheater.

A chunky dragon candle sconce - influenced by the AC/DC album playing in the forge when he was created. Definitely a heavy meta; dragon.

A general view of the trackwork taking place at Stapleton Road, on August 8th 1982. The engineers' train is standing 'wrong-line' on the Down Relief, the Up Relief had just been relaid with 60' panels, and was being ballasted.

In the background are two 47s with engineers trains, side by side. The loco on the right is 47191. The 47 on the left with the dominoes is 47078 SIR DANIEL GOOCH.

94. Mortal: Red lingerie by LoveLace

This photograph continues the view seen in the previous picture. We are looking at the rank of shops in Stapleton Road between Clark Street and Perry Street. All are looking run-down. On the corner is a branch of Luton's the bakers; the next shop looks like children's wear; then comes Weaver & Co. The word in small letters over the doorway looks to me like "typewriters" and, at first floor level is a painted advertisement featuring the name "Olympia", which was, I think, a make of typewriter. But ...a shop scraping a living from the sale and, presumably, servicing of typewriters? Could such things be? Next door are Regency Cleaners, then G. Pearce. Something tells me this was a butcher's. Then comes a shoe shop. The business at the end of the rank seems to be called Smith's. The lorry ...Express Carriers Ltd... is a Bedford TK. Noteworthy is the van parked at the side of Luton's, which appears to be a "box" body built on an Austin car. I suppose all the interesting chimney-pots must have been removed by now.
