I visited South Stack for the first time and waited around for a few hours waiting to see if sunset would transpire. Unfortunately the rain kept coming over in 20 minute waves and just as the sun was setting another down pour decided to stop me from getting the sun on the horizon, however I did manage to get this lovely glow at dusk, as the storm hits me from my left.

My stacked image of 21 sub-exposures seemed a little flat, so I had a go with it in Photoshop.

Actually, I went a little crazy, and this is the result of layering five copies of the original stacked image, using the Overlay blend mode, and setting subsequent layers to reciprocal opacity (i.e. layer 2 at 1/2 [50%], layer 3 at 1/3 [33%] and so on. After layer merging I pulled up the levels again, perhaps a third of way across from the right. At least it pumps some colour into the proceedings.

The aerosol stack for the ARM Mobile Facility (AMF) stands ready to collect measurements during the second deployment of the AMF in Niamey, Niger.

From January 2006 – 2007, the ARM Mobile Facility (AMF) supported the Radiative Atmospheric Divergence using AMF, GERB, and AMMA Stations (RADAGAST) field campaign conducted in Niamey, Niger. The purpose of the experiment was to study dust storms, specifically their impact on incoming solar energy and monsoon generation.

Mucking about with enfuse and align_image_stack, free tools that do image blending.

This image is a focus stack, meaning a set of images shot with narrow depth of field (50mm 1:1.4 in this case) but with the plane of focus changing rom front to back. Kind of like an exposure bracket, but with focus.

Softness in the result is unavoidable; it's the 'leftover' image from each out of focus frame.

I think this would work better with a longer focal length and/or a smaller aperture; f/1.4 may simply be too narrow. That's why I think the soft halos are so bad.

Still, an interesting trick to be able to call upon.

South Stack is famous as the location of one of Wales' most spectacular lighthouses, South Stack Lighthouse. It has a height of 41 metres (135 feet). It has a maximum area of 7 acres.

Until 1828 when an iron suspension bridge was built, the only means of crossing the deep water channel on to the island was in a basket which was suspended on a hemp cable. The suspension bridge was replaced in 1964, but by 1983 the bridge had to be closed to the public, due to safety reasons. A new aluminium bridge was built and the lighthouse was reopened for public visits in 1997. Thousands of people flock to the lighthouse every year, thanks to the continued public transport service from Holyhead's town centre.

There are over 400 stone steps down to the footbridge (and not, as local legend suggests, 365), and the descent and ascent provide an opportunity to see some of the 4,000 nesting birds that line the cliffs during the breeding season. The cliffs are part of the RSPB South Stack Cliffs bird reserve, based at Elin's Tower.

The Anglesey Coastal Path passes South Stack, as does the Cybi Circular Walk. The latter has long and short variants; the short walk is 4 miles long and takes around two hours to complete. Travelling from the Breakwater Country Park, other sites along the way are the North Stack Fog Signal station, Caer y Tŵr, Holyhead Mountain and Tŷ Mawr Hut Circles.

Took a handful of shots at random different depth of fields and combined them with auto stack in Photoshop. Pixel peeping I can see some issues, but just at normal viewing it did a pretty good job. I didn't shoot them with the intention of stacking, I was just taking a few variations of the shot to pick from.
