The earliest building was erected around 1175. The original Norman nave had a north aisle added 30 years later, in the new Gothic style.
Inside the church the corbel table and doorway exhibit fantastic examples of Romanesque carvings, including that Yorkshire speciality - the ‘beakhead’. The windows have had polycarbonate panels inserted, whose opaque qualities mirror the original horn windows when the building was erected.
St Peter’s Church Old Edlington was the first church to be vested into the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. Declared redundant in the mid 1960’s the roof, windows and the interior furnishings were removed prior to demolition. Rescued in the nick of time, this Grade I building has been carefully conserved for the benefit of future generations.

One source suggests that St Augustine's, Draycott in the Clay, Staffordshire, was formed as a mission church in Hanbury parish from 1922. It has been lined out with highly polished wooden wall panels and has full heating. The bell cote was removed a few years ago and has been replaced in wood although the pinnacle and cross seem to be original.
To my astonishment, as I have always pronounced Chartres St. "SHAR-tre" St., New Orleanians call it "Charters St." What?! (Look at that odd D that encloses the E of "de".)

The round pre-Romanesque church of St. Donat is the symbol of the city of Zadar. Due to its extraordinary acoustic features, the church is nowadays used for musical performances ("Musical Evenings in St. Donat") rather than worship.
I have, of course, photographed it many times before, inside and out, but can't help doing it again just from a slightly different perspective this time.
Lindau, located near the borders to Austria and Switzerland, was mentioned first time in 882 when a nunnery was founded here. The old town is on an island, which meanwhile is connected with the mainland by a road bridge and a railway dam.
The church of St. Stephan was built around 1180, Franciscans founded a monastery here in 1224. In 1274/75 Lindau became an Imperial Free City under King Rudolf I.
Lindau became Protestant in 1528. The nunnery remained Catholic while the Franciscan monastery, from which the first Reformation preachers came, was closed. During the Thirty Years' War, Lindau was unsuccessfully besieged by Swedish troops in 1646/47. Between 1445 and 1761, 18 people were indicted in witch trials in Lindau. The last victim of the witch hunt was Maria Madlener, who was executed on August 4, 1730.
St. Stephan, founded 1180, is the largest church on the island, located next to the Catholic Münster Unserer Lieben Frau right on the marketplace. After several expansions, the church lost its Romanesque facade in 1506, but inside the building the Romanesque basilica can still be seen in the otherwise Rococo church.

After the Easter church service, the congregation is getting ready to feast at the Church of St. Thomas, which is located on the confluence of two rivers.

St. Margaret’s Church, Stanford-le-Hope, Essex UK.
I’m not much of a churchgoer, but I cannot deny that a near 1,000 year old church conveys a sense of peace and stability. St Margaret’s tower dominates this small Essex town and is visible for some distance around. And the Autumnal sky this afternoon was wonderful.
