Himalaya was built at Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers-Armstrongs and launched 5 October 1948. She had an identical hull and machinery to the Orient Line's Orcades (yard no. 950 to Himalaya's 951), though differing in superstructure and internal layout. She began her service on the Tilbury-Bombay-Australia route in 1949 following her departure from the shipbuilding yard in August. During her commission Himalaya underwent a number of improvements the first of which was, although controversial at the time, a funnel cowl to keep the liner's decks clear of debris without interference to the boilers.
Arthur C. Clarke completed his book, The City and the Stars, on board Himalaya during a voyage to Sydney between September 1954 and March 1955, as mentioned at the end of the book.
In 1958, she pioneered a new South Pacific route for P&O, from Melbourne and Sydney to San Francisco and Los Angeles via Fiji, Honolulu and Vancouver. The following year, she was routed from Los Angeles to Singapore and then onward to London.
In the winter of 1959-60, she was given a major refit by the Rotterdam Drydock Co., which include the installation of full air conditioning. In 1963, following the sale of the Strath Class liners by P&O, Himalaya, along with Orcades, was converted to all tourist class and was often used on assisted immigrant sailings.

Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the first iron ship in the world and was built 1839-1843. This amazing ship has been restored and opened to the public. Well worth a visit to the Great Western Dockyard, Hotwells, Bristol BS1 6TY
Shieldhall is a ship that was built in Glasgow and completed in 1955. It was one of the last steamships to be built and was a sludge boat treating sewage sludge at sea.
In 1976 the ship was purchased by the Southern Water Authority and would take sludge from the Solent. In 1985 it was decided to preserve the ship and the first voyage of the ship was conducted on 9 June 1991.
The ship is now owned by the Solent Steam Packet Limited which is a preservation society operating as a charity.
SS Stockport was a steam powered North Sea ferry of 1,631 tons built by Earle's shipyard of Hull in 1912 for the Great Central Railway. In 1923 her ownership was passed to the London and North Eastern Railway and in 1935 to Associated Humber Lines. On 11 August 1937 SS Stockport was damaged during a collision in thick fog with the Hull steam trawler Lady Beryl. in 1941 SS Stockport was commandeered by the Admiralty to become a convoy rescue ship. Her job was to pick up survivors of Royal Navy and Merchant ships which were victims of U-boat and air attack. She was converted for her new role with survivors accommodation, an on-board hospital, guns, radios and more fuel storage for long Atlantic voyages. Her Merchant Navy crew were joined by a Royal Navy contingent including medical staff, a gun crew and communication specialists.
She was attempting to regain the convoy when on 23 February U-604 torpedoed and sank her in the mid-Atlantic with the loss of all her crew and the survivors that she had rescued from other vessels.
