In December 1919, the small coastal steamer SS Ethie was caught in a strong winter storm. Low on coal and in danger of losing power, her captain beached her near Martins Point, just north of Rocky Harbour. All 92 passengers and crew were rescued, brought ashore via a chair rigged to a line from the high cliffs nearby. One tiny baby was brought safe ashore in a mail bag. Legend maintains that a dog carried the rope to shore, and in later years Reuben Decker of Martins Point was presented a silver inlaid collar for his dog to mark his role in the rescue. Today just a few rusted fragments of the poor old SS Ethie remain.
