Rockville Maryland, June 27, 2023. A huge group (1,000?) of mainly African American and Muslim folks gathered at the Board Of Education to protest LGBTQ+ education in Montgomery County MD public schools. They are advocating to restore an 'opt out' policy. That means that if a teacher assigns reading material that parents object to, the student does not have to participate. The main organizers of today's protest seemed to be white activists associated with intolerant right wing outfits including the SPLC* designated hate group Moms For Liberty. Also present were the shadowy Family Rights For Religious Freedom*** and The Coalition For Virtue**. Sadly, there also seemed to be major buy-in from Muslim groups I respect that should know better. Inside the BOE there was testimony about MoCo's policies both pro and con but the general public was largely excluded for understandable security reasons.
A small contingent of my Rainbow Brigade friends were on hand for a dance party to show support for our LGBTQ+ neighbors. Although one of the white male right wing speakers claimed that there was physical conflict initiated by the Rainbows this was not the case. I've attended and photographed a fair number of Rainbow events and I can report that Rainbow protectors are well trained in peaceful de-escalation techniques. In fact, one of the folks here today actually took a punch from a Proud Boy and just turned the other cheek. Thankfully he has healed and continues to show up to support his community with skill and grace.

Around the centennial year and month of Leo Frank's lynching, Rabbi Steven Lebow sponsored a billboard claiming Leo Frank was innocent, thusly inflaming and infuriating the people of Georgia. It was tacky to the core, especially since twenty-nine year old Leo Max Frank used Mary Phagan's delicate and pretty face, as his punching bag, until she appeared swollen and indigo. In this age where sexual abuse is being called out everywhere from Broadway to Hollywood, the bill board was just plain gauche. The fact Phagan had been strangled to death -- slow-strangulation-lynched -- by Leo Frank, made the bill board grotesque. The whole thing was divisive and made everyone in the Metro area wonder why a rabbi who conducts inter-faith & Jewish-Gentile marriages would be trying to stir up the pot of resentment over the contentious episode from a century ago.

Advertisement by Marietta Rabbi Steven Lebow, bringing together some of the high profile and brightest Jewish-American legal minds in Georgia (activist judges and a senior assistant attorney general) to call for the full exoneration of Leo Frank.
Why the struggle for Leo Frank's vindication did not end in 1986.
When Leo Frank was pardoned in 1986 he was not officially absolved or exonerated of murdering Mary Phagan, he was only pardoned (without addressing his innocence or guilt) on a technicality because the State failed to prosecute anyone who lynched / hanged him. This was as Steve Oney once put it, to paraphrase, a government sanctioned execution and not the work of a traditional alcohol fueled mob, but the leading citizens of Georgia including at the time current judges, senators, government officials and a former Governor of Georgia.
The Jewish community continues to agitate for the full exoneration of Leo Frank and this movement is led by Rabbi Steven Lebow and prominent individual Jewish-American jurists in Georgia and also activists from other U.S. states, including efforts by Jewish alphabet-soup groups, like ADL and SPLC who put out biased articles about the case..
100 years after the lynching, there are a number of individuals and Jewish groups working behind the scenes right now seeking to get Leo Frank: full legal exoneration. In time the exoneration will come, it just might take another 100 years, but probably much sooner as the budget looks good.

Morris Dees, Founder of SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center), pecking away on an old type writer circa 1970s. SPLC put out an eight minute short video about the Leo Frank case, a 3 minute excerpt of which is presented here on Flickr.
Morris Dees was fired from the SPLC in 2018 allegedly over a long standing history of racism and sexual harassment. The SPLC had its ties severed with US government agencies allegedly over SPLC's connection with causing a murder of a Christian groups founder, falsely labelling the group extremist because the Christian group believed in traditional marriage was between men and women, and was against homosexual marriage.
The SPLC also posted a lot of false rumors and raunchy tabloid style claims on its website about what it perceives to be its political enemies.
Williams seems to have an especially close working relationship with SPLC reporter Don Terry. It was Terry who appeared at the October 2014 hearing where Gliebe announced his abdication and was succeeding himself with Williams. With such a business-like and friendly dialog presented here, it would certainly be reasonable to think that Terry’s coverage of the event was done in cooperation with Williams. Shortly after that hearing Williams granted the SPLC a full blown interview.
NARRG was also invited by Don Terry to an impromptu interview outside the courthouse but was spurned by the NARRG representative. Our policy is not to talk or communicate in any way with the SPLC!

In the early part of the Spring semester of 1988, the President of Western Kentucky University, Kern Alexander, announced that he wanted to install faculty editors at the WKU student newspaper, the College Heights Herald, and the WKU yearbook, the Talisman. Both publications were entirely student run. These editors would control what students were able to publish, and have the power to stop any story or photo from being published. He also wanted to require students to take a class if they wanted to work at either publication, and then limit how many semesters students could work at the publications. Most everyone agreed that Dr. Alexander's motivation was that he did not like the idea of an adversarial press, and that he was angry that the paper had uncovered that his wife would not be joining him at WKU and that he was getting a divorce. He denied those were the reasons. WKU students rebelled at the idea of faculty control of the student publications. Rockville Maryland, June 27, 2023. A huge group (1,000?) of mainly African American and Muslim folks gathered at the Board Of Education to protest LGBTQ+ education in Montgomery County MD public schools. They are advocating to restore an 'opt out' policy. That means that if a teacher assigns reading material that parents object to, the student does not have to participate. The main organizers of today's protest seemed to be white activists associated with intolerant right wing outfits including the SPLC* designated hate group Moms For Liberty. Also present were the shadowy Family Rights For Religious Freedom*** and The Coalition For Virtue**. Sadly, there also seemed to be major buy-in from Muslim groups I respect that should know better. Inside the BOE there was testimony about MoCo's policies both pro and con but the general public was largely excluded for understandable security reasons.
A small contingent of my Rainbow Brigade friends were on hand for a dance party to show support for our LGBTQ+ neighbors. Although one of the white male right wing speakers claimed that there was physical conflict initiated by the Rainbows this was not the case. I've attended and photographed a fair number of Rainbow events and I can report that Rainbow protectors are well trained in peaceful de-escalation techniques. In fact, one of the folks here today actually took a punch from a Proud Boy and just turned the other cheek. Thankfully he has healed and continues to show up to support his community with skill and grace.

Younge, at 21, was shot by a Standard Oil gas station attendant, in Macon County, Alabama, for attempting to use a whites-only restroom at the station. At the time of his murder, he was involved in a voter registration campaign. Initially county officials refused to indict the attendant, but later tried the attendant in front of an all-white jury, who acquitted him.
