The “Brocken Spectre” phenomenon- one’s shadow casted on the clouds or mist opposite the sun. This one also has a “Glory”, a kind of rainbow surrounding the shadow. Haleakala crater. Maui, HI.

The "spectre" appears when the sun shines from behind a climber who is looking down from a ridge or peak into mist. The light projects the climber's shadow forward through the mist, often in an odd triangular shape due to perspective. The apparent magnification of size of the shadow is an optical illusion that occurs when the observer judges his shadow on relatively nearby clouds to be at the same distance as faraway land objects seen through gaps in the clouds. The shadow also falls on water droplets of varying distances from the eye, confusing depth perception. The ghost can appear to move (sometimes quite suddenly) because of the movement of the cloud layer.
The head of the figure is often surrounded by the glowing halo-like rings of a glory, rings of coloured light that appear directly opposite the sun when sunlight is reflected by a cloud of uniformly-sized water droplets.
A beautiful spectre in spring.I used paint shop to frame the original picture. This is before I figured out how to crop on paint. On that note I have no idea how to do fractuals.I also like my EP paintshop better than the Windows 7 on this computer, which I got for X-mas from my man-but then I haven't quite figured it out yet.I can't get the invert to work when I want it to.I can crop, but it still leaves a white background if I want to upload art to my Zazzle.com site,so I use my older computer to do this still.
Gareth is somewhat photo shy when sober. This was a serendipitous shot... he was almost too dark to see, but the bright headtorch beam reflects off the back of his hand to light up his face, and scatters off some of the woodsmoke.
During my tour of MUDAM as the Unreliable Tour Guide I called this costume "the spectre of communism". In fact, it looks more like a sea creature.
Abbaye de Mortemer.
The most haunted abbey in France :
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortemer_Abbey
There are a number of legends and ghost stories relating to the abbey. Matilda of England was forced by her father Henry I to stay in a room in the abbey for 5 years. After her death in Rouen, she is said to have come back to haunt the place. Her ghost is known as The White Lady. Visitors to the abbey have reported hearing strange noises and feeling a strange presence.
Four monks were murdered during the French Revolution and their ghosts are also said to haunt the abbey. If you meet a cat in the ruins, it is alleged to be a Goblin cat (Norman: eul cat goublin), guarding the treasure of the abbey. There are a number of other legends, giving the abbey the nickname of as most haunted abbey in France.
Abbaye la plus hantée de France :
fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbaye_de_Mortemer
