I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-grey,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

My very own attempt at a Brocken spectre, seen on Easby Moor, above Great Ayton in North Yorkshire.

This is a type of stick insect (Extatosoma tiaratum).
I've only seen this once in the garden in 4 years.
I thought it was eating aphids etc., but it's actually herbivorous.
E. tiaratum was first identified by white men in 1827, and are now kept as pets all over the world.
The eggs are coated with an enticing coating of food.
Ants carry them back to the nest, and eat the coating.
The younglings then mimic ants.
When there are no males to mate with, females perform parthenogenesis.
There's something incredibly spooky about the way the tall "man" in the background suddenly jumps out at you, when walking around this display - taken in the heritage museum in Brodick, but I well remember that kind of harmonium organ in use for real(!)
