On October 24, 1871, a mob of 500 lynched 19 Chinese on Calle de Los Negros in El Pueblo. The massacre brought the first national and international attention to Los Angeles. The site of the massacre is now a streetlight. Read Dr. Munson Kwok's Statement of Remembrance on behalf of the Chinese American Museum. The Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judy Baca © and SPARC.

Five miles south of the MU campus, South Farm Research Center supports the research, outreach and teaching missions of animal science, plant science, veterinary science, biology, botany and other disciplines. The Center is the location of several research facilities including the Swine Research Center, the Beef Research and Teaching Center, the Turfgrass Research Center and the Equine Teaching Facility. The Center also supports research and demonstration projects in entomology, poultry and maize genetics. The Missouri Foundation Seed program uses South Farm to increase the sales of newly developed seed varieties to dealers. Easy access from campus allows South Farm to be used for hands-on teaching to more than 1,500 students annually and is the location for numerous graduate student research projects. The Center hosts a Showcase each fall to share its projects with the general public; it has become a popular family event, with attendance in the thousands.

The SPARC building, formerly the Venice Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, was an active jail from 1929 until the early seventies. SPARC made the jail its headquarters in 1977 and "liberated" the space for the arts. The Old Venice jail houses SPARC's Mural Resource and Education Center, the SPARC gallery, the UCLA/SPARC Cesar Chavez Digital Mural Lab, the Judy Baca Archive, the Minna Agins Collection, darkroom and etching facilities, and five artists studios. This is the jail used in the movie L.A. Confidential. The City Project Stealth Mobile Unit II is in the foreground.
