The Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judy Baca and SPARC (Social and Public Art Resource Center) commemorate Chavez Ravine and the division of the barrios with freeways. Chavez Ravine was a bucolic Latino community through the 1950s, until the City of Los Angeles forcibly evicted the residents with promises of affordable housing. Mrs. Aurora Archega, whose family had resided in Chavez Ravine for 36 years, refused to leave her home, and was carried out by the police, with all of her belongings, on May 9, 1959, in a scene captured in this classic photograph. She was then jailed for 30 days. The City authorized the sale of Chavez Ravine to the Dodgers for a stadium 50 years ago on October 7, 1957. The Dodgers drowned Chavez Ravine in a sea of asphalt to build Dodger Stadium and a parking lot for 50,000 cars and not a single place for children to play. The Dodgers promised to spend $500,000 on a recreation facility in the area but have never done so. Los Desterrados, the people who lost their homes and way of life at Chavez Ravine, still meet regularly to commemorate the community there. Culture Clash revived the forgotten history of Chavez Ravine in their play of that name, and Ry Cooder in his CD. Read the L.A. Times coverage of the 50th anniversary. The Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judy Baca © and SPARC.
From June 3 to June 13, 1943, servicemen stationed at the Chavez Ravine naval station randomly beat up young Mexican American and Black men throughout Los Angeles. The sailors brutalized their victims and left them lying in the streets; police and sheriffs then arrested victims instead of their attackers. Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judy Baca © and SPARC.
Mexican-Americans including U.S. citizens were deported by train from the Cornfield -- now the Los Angeles State Historic Park -- because of discrimination and competition for jobs during the Great Depression. Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judy Baca © and SPARC.

Some news that's fit to print in the NYT today:
Compact Nuclear Fusion Reactor Is Very Likely to Work, Studies Suggest
TLDR; "in seven peer-reviewed papers published Tuesday in a special issue of The Journal of Plasma Physics, researchers laid out the evidence that SPARC would succeed and produce as much as 10 times the energy it consumes."
"Scientists developing a compact version of a nuclear fusion reactor have shown in a series of research papers that it should work, renewing hopes that the long-elusive goal of mimicking the way the sun produces energy might be achieved and eventually contribute to the fight against climate change.
Construction of a reactor, called SPARC, which is being developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a spinoff company, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, is expected to begin next spring and take three or four years
Bob Mumgaard, Commonwealth Fusion’s chief executive and one of the company’s founders, said a goal of the Sparc project was to develop fusion in time for it to play a role in mitigating global warming.
A fusion plant would not burn fossil fuels and would not produce greenhouse-gas emissions. But its fuel, usually isotopes of hydrogen, would be far more plentiful than the uranium used in most nuclear plants, and fusion would generate less, and less dangerous, radioactivity and waste than fission plants.
“Reading these papers gives me the sense that they’re going to have the controlled thermonuclear fusion plasma that we all dream about,” said Cary Forest, a physicist at the University of Wisconsin who is not involved in the project."
FD: Future Ventures is an early investor in Commonwealth Fusion. This third party analysis verifies our investment thesis; tokamak fusion is an engineering project, not a science project. If they can build it, the scientific community agrees on the performance that will result.

Congrats to Commonwealth Fusion on their new round of $84M with Temasek and Equinor joining as new investors.
"CFS has grown significantly since its founding in 2018, with a program to develop high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets and design and build the world's first net-energy-gain fusion system, called SPARC. Both are on schedule and below budget."
"Fusion energy is an investment in our future that offers an important path toward combating climate change. Our continued investment in CFS fits strongly within our mission as we seek long-term solutions to address the world's energy challenges," said Steve Jurvetson, Managing Director and Founder, Future Ventures.
"Today’s nuclear power plants split atoms in a process that releases lots of energy, which can be turned into carbon-free electricity. But the current breed of fission reactors come with some important downsides, such as long-lasting radioactive waste and ballooning costs of construction, which have undermined public acceptance of the technology.
Fusion energy is the power that makes stars shine and is the opposite of fission. It unleashes energy by merging atoms together — usually hydrogen isotopes — in a process that generates temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius. If it can be made to work, the technology comes with the advantage of creating less waste and having a near-unlimited supply of fuel.
The fact Commonwealth Fusion closed its last funding round during the pandemic shows that investors are still focused on addressing climate change, CEO Mumgaard said. “It’s a statement of how the world sees things”.
Today's News
with Future Ventures (Saenko), Khosla Ventures (Vinod), Lowercase Capital (Sacca) and Breakthrough Energy Ventures (Gates, Bezos and Ma).
Here is a little video of my visit with my daughter as we crawled all over their record-setting Alcator-C reactor.
From today’s announcement: “Leveraging decades of MIT-led research, CFS will produce first-of-its-kind high temperature superconductor magnets to build smaller and lower-cost fusion power plants. CFS in collaboration with MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center will use these magnets to build SPARC by 2025 and demonstrate net energy gain from fusion for the first time in history. SPARC will pave the way for the first commercially viable fusion power plant called ARC, which will produce fusion power onto the grid.”
"We have been looking for the right clean energy investment opportunity in fusion for the past 20 years," said Steve Jurvetson, CEO of Future Ventures. "We wanted a company that was ready to make a business of fusion and we have finally found it with Commonwealth Fusion Systems. The hard science from which their approach is based has been proven by this team as well as leaders in the field around the world. With some clever engineering, CFS is ready to harness the power of the solar cycle to change the world and usher in the era of clean baseload energy generation for the betterment of all."
Maryanna Saenko started a PhD at MIT, birthplace of CFS, and led this investment for Future Ventures. And practical fusion has been a holy grail for me for many years. It just so happens that the very first investment I ever made in a private company was in a novel nuclear fusion company, back in 1995.
More on the CFS approach, and congrats to CFS Chief Scientist Brandon Sorbom for being selected to the MIT Tech Review's 35 Innovators Under 35.
Bob Mumgaard, CEO of Commonwealth Fusion (CFS), updated our investors today on the progress being made toward a clean fusion energy future with their SPARC machine under construction, and the larger ARC to come.
From yesterday’s FastCompany article on “the frontrunners in the trillion-dollar race for limitless fusion power” leading with CFS:
“On a growing campus an hour outside of Boston, the MIT spinoff Commonwealth Fusion Systems is building their first machine, SPARC, with a goal of producing power by 2025.” CEO Mumgaard: “You’ll push a button, and for the first time on earth you will make more power out than in from a fusion plasma. That’s about 200 million degrees—you know, cooling towers will have a bunch of steam go out of them—and you let your finger off the button and it will stop, and you push the button again and it will go.”
“One morning last December, the company fired up its newest supermagnet—a 10-ton, 8-foot-tall device made of hundreds of tightly-twisted coils—and quietly pushed its magnetic field beyond a whopping 20 tesla, a record for a magnet of its size. (Most MRIs operate at a strength of about 1 tesla.) Eventually, 18 of these magnets will surround the SPARC’s tokamak, which CFS says could produce as much as 11 times more energy than it consumes, and at prices cheaper than fossil fuels. Mumgaard estimates the world will need something to replace the world’s 60,000 carbon-emitting power stations, which account for about half of global energy use. Ten thousand fusion plants would do it.”
