The spa was smaller than I expected, and I had turned up 3 hours before my treatment to use the facilities, so had a lot of time to kill in the pool and hot tub, sauna and steam room, but I love swimming and hot tubs so that was ok. I had booked a full massage and mini facial, which were BRILLIANT. I was treated by Galia, who was brilliant. Excellent massage and facial. . She asked if the pressure was ok, which it was. Spa Complex, Scarborough. Scarborough Jazz Festival 2009 at the Grand Hall in the Spa Complex. On-stage the Ryan Quigley Quartet give one of the free events on the first afternoon of the Festival. The Spa opened in 1880, replacing an earlier building which had been destroyed in a fire. It was designed by Verity & Hunt. The Grand Hall was the largest of the spaces in the complex, but at a very late stage of building, the Winter Garden (aka Floral Lounge) was converted to a theatre and therefore opened slightly after the main hall. The Spa had a major restoration in 1981 and another in 2010/11, after this image was taken. Grade 2* listed.

"In the 17th century Scarborough Spa waters were discovered by Mrs Thomasin Farrer, the wife of one of Scarborough’s leading citizens, John Farrer. She found natural spring water bubbling out beneath the cliff to the south of the town. These waters, which stained the rocks a russet colour, tasted slightly bitter and were said to cure minor ailments. She told her friends and neighbours about the medicinal effects and soon drinking the Spa waters became an accepted medicine. Later thousands of visitors flocked to benefit from their supposed medicinal qualities. The southern part of Scarborough became very popular. The precursor to the present Scarborough Spa building became a fashionable attraction."

Might be her first spa in 40 years - she smelled so much and had weird grease in her face (looked like bogeys under her nose)!
