Typical N.W. Wisconsin female(sow)black bear, about 120 lbs and 7-9 years of age. Such a beautiful creatures diminutive size can be very deceiving, especially this tough nosed little lady-bear who is quite the predator, and more then capable of taking care of herself and her cubs....

The Special Operations Weapon model Gamma 9 tried to fix most of the problems that appeared with the Gamma 4 model. The first reactions were very positive.*

EDITORS NOTES: Yeah, I finally got around to finishing this weapon. This weapon is basically a more advanced model of the SOW-G4, which can be found here www.flickr.com/photos/47990342@N06/4662113621/ . I tried to fix the irons, which seemed to be the biggest gripe people had with it.

farmer sowing seeds, taken from a train enroute to chennai

This mother had gathered a crowd which the rangers in Yellowstone kept at a safe distance. Then she followed this path into the distance, which caused the crowd to disperse and the rangers following. A few of us stayed and to our surprise she turned and quickly came back the way she had gone. It was clear she wanted to cross the road, frequently standing to see where she could cross without encountering people or vehicles. (Nice of her.) Three large cubs, I was told four year olds, we noticed in the field. Apparently, she was in search of the cubs, got their scent and quickly came to join them. We watched the happy greeting and nursing but at too great a distance for quality shots. I'm posting this one mainly to share my amazement at her claws. Amazing!

It was a perfect day

For sowing; just

As sweet and dry was the ground

As tobacco-dust.

I tasted deep the hour

Between the far

Owl's chuckling first soft cry

And the first star.

A long stretched hour it was;

Nothing undone

Remained; the early seeds

All safely sown.

And now, hark at the rain,

Windless and light,

Half a kiss, half a tear,

Saying good-night.

Occasionally sows have difficulty during farrowing and need a hand - this particular girl had already given birth to 8 piglets, but upon manual exam, she had another 5 (3 live, 1 dead, 1 mummy) still in her uterus/vaginal canal.

PS, it's just before midnight and I think we've got 3 cubs !! Well definitely 2 and weirdly it looks like there are two mothers and neither of them are Mrs Badger ! So potentially we could have 3 litters, mental !!! Oh my goodness, I need a good sit down now as my mum says : ) I know we go through this rigmarole every spring but seeing several new badgers running down the garden is just the most exciting thing ever. I'll try not to bore you to death with pictures tomorrow, got to make some room on the computer now : )

Oh Mrs Badger ! Cats aside I don't think I've ever loved an animal more, she means the world to me, I wouldn't say she trusts me but she ignores me and that's great ! She's beginning to look her age a bit now but I think she's still beautiful, I often wonder what goes on in their heads. Don't know if she has cubs, I saw the other female at the back door last night with her new cub and one of the yearlings, three generations together but I didn't have the camera or light set up. I stayed up all night hoping to see the cub again and get some first pictures but with no luck, still it's better than watching telly all night. I was gonna pretend I focused on the nose deliberately but you wouldn't have fallen for that would you !

A couple more below, for those flickring in a foreign language : )

South aisle east window depicting the parable of the Sower by A.L. & C.E.Moore, 1928.

Brailes is one of the more picturesque villages of south Warwickshire, and its church of St George is justly renowned as one of the county's grandest parish churches. It is an impressively large building in a delightfully coloured golden-brown ironstone, dating mainly from the 14th century and terminated by a lofty west tower (finished in the following century), a handsome edifice that announces the building's presence from afar.

The main body of the church impresses more with its substantial length and width than height, and once inside the sense of space punctuated by arches and columns is impossible to ignore. The wooden roof above seems to stretch forever onwards and is supported by some amusingly carved head-corbels. A fine 14th century font stands at the west end adorned with geometric designs like traceried windows, as if each side was based on a page from some medieval mason's pattern-book. In the south aisle is a very heavily eroded medieval priest's effigy on a tomb chest, its condition explained by the fact it originally stood in the churchyard until being brought inside to protect it from further weathering only in 1933. There is an interesting mixture of glass in the windows, all Victorian or more recent but with a couple of above average pieces.

This was only my second ever visit to Brailes church (first was on a family day out in my early teens long ago). It made a fitting end to a day's cycling in the area, and being late in the day I was lucky to find it still open, which I believe it normally is during the day..

A final word of thanks here is due to my mate Tim Clevely who came to my rescue as I made my way home after leaving here only to have an inner-tube on my bike fail apparently beyond redemption a few miles on. I could have faced a very long walk home (would have missed last train too), so that lift back (and the subsequent social evening) was hugely appreciated!

People suffering through various events which can cause sorrow, death, loss of loved ones, disease, etc,. are depicted. The theme/lesson is that beyond tragedy and sadness, there is joy and happiness.
