Hello darkness my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
left it's seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
still remains, within the sounds of silence
...
(Salve oscurità, mia vecchia amica
ho ripreso a parlarti ancora
perché una visione che fa dolcemente rabbrividire
ha lasciato in me i suoi semi mentre dormivo
e la visione che è stata piantata nel mio cervello
ancora persiste nel suono del silenzio )
Sounder #1509 for Tacoma and points south blasts out of King Street Station as a BNSF mixed freight from Everett waits for a window to head south. The off-ramp on the right is part of the interchange that makes up the very west end of Interstate 90.
A little bit of Midtown New York street action. This guy was extremely tall and stood out as he wandered between the NBC building and Radio City Music Hall.
My shoot's main theme with Oleks(Aleksanda) was the Ukraine issue. As she is an Ukrainian model, and as someone who experienced the war for one week, she shared some her of traumas--like the sounds of sirens, like when they hear the sounds sirens how they had to go to the shelters and had to stay there. We both felt that we would better go on this topic, as a sort of a memorial for those who suffer the trauma, so we both wanted to go deep inside the rabbit hole, with the sounds of sirens.
Technically, that shoot was made under a very strong and harsh back light. It was very hard to capture the face with that hard light- before using the exposure compensation, I decided to increase my ISO, in order to get the details I wanted to get on her face and I guess that helped:)
Couldn't think of an adequate story to go with this image. I'm drawn back to what it means to me looking at it. All I could think about was this song. It reminds me of my older brother I guess. Perhaps because I sat alone when photographing this scene, watching the darkness envelope these beautiful mountains and wished I wasn't. It brought back memories of many a late night spent with my older brother when we were teens. I took great comfort and trust in our conversations, his advice and opinion. We talked about everything under the sun and I remember many times sitting together and watching the stars rise high in the skies like a million tiny lanterns. It was my brother who also showed me this song before he left for boot camp. Since then we've both grown up and moved to different states but I think of those nights often when I'm up late.
Here's to
starry skies and memories of long nights... to loved ones who were willing to sit with us in both the cover of darkness and in the beauty of light.
Thank you as always for listening to my ramblings...
xx

Milford Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand. Probably one of the most beautiful and impressive place on earth.
Part of a hilltop sculpture near Burnley called the Singing Ringing Tree. It is made of many metal tubes in a twisting formation which was designed to harness the elements to create very unusual and eerie sounds as the wind flows through. Worth visiting. This is part of a selection of sculptures around East Lancashire, all with a different design.

A while back I attempted to get this shot, but completely wimped out regarding how close I got to the train passing at around 40mph....
That being said, this time I had about 30 seconds to change lenses (because I was off shooting macros of driftwood near where this was made) and get completely set up, tripod in place and all, and fire off this one frame in manual mode to get the shot.
The one thing that would take this shot to the next level would be a model in there somewhere getting blasted with gigantic soft box.
The colors in the sky this evening were simply amazing...which I have not seen in some time around here. Fifteen minutes after this shot it began to rain cats and dogs, which has been the typical weather we have been having the last couple weeks...
OK, OK, there *have* been a few sun-breaks in there from time-to-time.
Time to bring on Spring for goodness sake!
