SOFTlab - CHROMAtex.me installation at Bridge Gallery. An awesome piece of work one could only wish to have come up with oneself.

Common weathers', the exhibition ecosystem by new-york based studio SOFTlab and the living engages community input through an interactive lighting system embedded in the lower rings of each zone. visitors to the exhibit are invited to send text messages to the cloud 'hotline' with comments or questions about the installation. based on the content of these text messages, one or more of the funnels blink, and collective interest in the topics are registered as bright glowing regions that change over time. The translucent-like surface above and the pulsing of the interactive lighting around each lower ring are meant to operate like a weather system. a system with eddies, tangencies, turbulence, and static, much like the way ideas are formed in communities of people, neighborhoods, classrooms, nations, etc. The surface was made of over 5000 unique mylar panels, each laser cut and labeled for production. held in tension by a series of CNC cut wooden rings, the pattern changes with the height making it gradually more transparent from above and giving a gradual transition from a solid surface to a more fenestrated lace like surface. I consistently enjoy spending time around the Flatiron District. On this night in early December 2015 it's unseasonably warm. It's in the low 60s, so this means that the streets are even more active than usual for this beast of a city. I love it!

The above installation is on display for the 2015 holiday season--Nova by SOFTlab.

From the Flatiron District website:

"In Nova, the placement of scopes, or viewing cones, is arranged to represent a centralized proverbial North Star for the Flatiron District, with each scope pointing to a distinct landmark. In effect, Nova acts as an observatory for the “constellation” of iconic sites in the neighborhood: the Flatiron Building, Met Life Tower clock tower, Empire State Building, and surrounding landmarks."

Located in the public space surrounding Google’s new campus headquarters in Mountain View, California the Halo Pavilion stands as a testament to the innovative fusion of art and engineering. As you approach Google's new building, the pavilion emerges as a striking feature in the landscape. Perched atop a gentle hill rising just above the treeline, the exterior of the circular pavilion features an arrangement of vertical aluminum tubes contrasting starkly with its wondrous interior. The interior (inner structure pictured here) reveals a crystalline steel structure, adorned with dichroic acrylic. This play of materials creates an enchanting environment that shifts and sparkles with the changing light.

The Halo Pavilion was designed and constructed for Google's new headquarters by SOFTlab of New York City.
