There are several Council-planted shrubs outside my flat and every year this Rock Rose makes a huge and colourful display - so I 'stole' a few blooms.
I placed them in a pink glass candle holder that was a pressy from a friend last Christmas and added a tiny cup &saucer from my collection.
I took the shot using the soft focus setting in my camera.
The call came, I answered. "Where are your open Rose pics?" came the cry, all the way from Western Australia. Well despite a stiff breeze, necessitating the 70-200mm lens (for me anyway), here we go with the 2025 season opener!

Our local camera club's assignment this month is "soft". On a hike out to the famous "Grotto" in Bruce Peninsula National Park i was looking for some inspiration amid all the hard ice.
A simple trick to soft focus photography, Vaseline. Years ago when Catherine and I were shooting film a little trick we learned, and had fun with was to add {smear} some vaseline on a spare UV or clear filter. DO NOT do this on your lens!! You smear the petroleum jelly around the outer edges of the glass and try to leave the center of the filter clean and without the vaseline on it. A little alcohol on a paper towel can be used to clean the center should you get some of the jelly where you don't want it. Two other tricks to try that will give you a soft focus look is hair spray sprayed around the out perimeter of the filter, and you also can try shooting through a nylon stocking (with your wife's leg out of it) :) I haven't done this in years and I just thought about it again, found myself an unused filter, smeared the vaseline on it, and had some fun shooting the above images. Now you can buy soft focus filters, or for a much higher cost a LensBaby, and both will yield similar, but not quite the same results. But save yourself some money, smear 15 cents worth of vaseline on that filter and have some fun with it!

My first attempt at Free Lensing. Removing the lens from the camera body and holding it close to the camera while tilting and moving it slightly in an effort to focus and create an unusual effect. Something I will try and play with some more. I was using a 50mm lens

Die vier Kerzen ~
Vier Kerzen brannten am Adventskranz. Es war still. So still,
dass man hörte, wie die Kerzen zu reden begannen. Die erste
Kerze seufzte und sagte: „Ich heiße FRIEDEN. Mein Licht leuchtet,
aber die Menschen halten keinen Frieden. Sie wollen mich nicht."
Ihr Licht wurde immer kleiner und verlosch schließlich ganz.
Die zweite Kerze flackerte und sagte: „Ich heiße GLAUBEN.
Aber ich bin überflüssig. Die Menschen wollen von Gott nichts
wissen. Es hat keinen Sinn mehr, dass ich brenne." Ein Luftzug
wehte durch den Raum, und die Kerze war aus.
Leise und sehr traurig meldete sich die dritte Kerze zu Wort:
„Ich heiße LIEBE. Ich habe keine Kraft mehr zu brennen.
Die Menschen stellen mich an die Seite. Sie sehen nur sich selbst
und nicht die anderen, die sie lieb haben sollen." Und mit einem
letzten Aufflackern war auch dieses Licht ausgelöscht.
Da kam ein Kind in den Raum. Es schaute die Kerzen an und sagte:
„Aber ihr sollt doch brennen und nicht aus sein!" Und fast fing es
an zu weinen. Da meldete sich die vierte Kerze zu Wort. Sie sagte:
„Hab keine Angst. So lange ich brenne, können wir auch die anderen
Kerzen wieder anzünden. Ich heiße HOFFNUNG."
Mit einem Hölzchen nahm das Kind Licht von dieser Kerze und
erweckte die anderen Lichter Frieden, Glauben und die Liebe
wieder zu Leben.
