Shell is generally the way to go, but for humans who need a holding hand, these web apps and GUI apps should help jump start the process.

1. Github is the leading platform for git repo’s. Public repo hosting is free. Private repo hosting costs $. Many open source projects host on GitHub. Great community. Recommended for public repo hosting. github.com
2. BitBucket is a clone of github. One can argue whether it is in fact unethical that they do that. But BitBucket supports free private hosting so SML uses it also. In recent years BitBucket has been gaining traction in the Python community. Most notably the flask framework is hosted on BitBucket and not Github. Recommended for free private repo hosting. bitbucket.org
3. SourceTree is a free GUI client for git repo browsing and tracking. It is arguably the best free app available on the OSX. Its UI can use a work over, but again you can’t beat its price. Recommended for free GUI repo browsing. www.sourcetreeapp.com/
4. Kaleidoscope is not really a git-specific app, but it is a pretty GUI client for diff’ing. Recently updated, the new version now supports 3-way-diff, image diff, folder digg and other enhancement. Recommended for casual as well as serious users. kaleidoscopeapp.com
To learn git, there is a free book written by Scott Chacon and published by Apress: Pro Git licensed CCBY. Printed version also available from Amazon. git-scm.com/book

This video is done for my 人流 Human Logistics series. What I tried to do is to show that even without specific signage or directions, we as humans also travel in the flow similar to the flock of birds and school of fish.
This particular video is assembled using footage shot from the ground level. Some parts are more successful than the others. But in some earlier videography shot from the aerial view, the pattern and formation are very obvious.
This is a 10 year project of mine. And I hope that at the end of the decade I will be able to assemble enough clips to make a feature film. The soundtrack is written quickly inside Ableton Live.
Everything is licensed via Creative Commons. The video should be downloadable from Vimeo and the soundtrack from SoundCloud.

I used to do my own photography for my designs. But sometimes it was challenging to get something together quickly last minute and so I ended up using stock, which is never really in a way that I want them.
So I thought that I would just go and photograph some stock for myself to use, which is why there are a bunch of very minimalist abstract forms on my stream now.
I have had a fairly difficult time finding a good angle for this because the basketball courts are surrounded by these very tight green frames, but also because of that, they added a bit of front bokeh to these captures, which is interesting to me.
I might just have to reserve a court next time so I can photograph these properly, but at least it helps to figure out where this is available nearby.

This is a handheld 6-image pano stitch. The path to the top is really steep and carrying my tripod with me was prohibitively dangerous. Hopefully I will have time in the future to bring an entourage of photo assistants with me. For now this is possible mostly because Photoshop cS6’s pano engine is pretty good these days.

Closed to the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple on the other side of the 玉皇頂 Jade Emperor Peak is a “Guest House” (aka hotel) which is enclosed in radio satellites. The very traditional architecture of the tower suggests that it was probably originally built as a watch tower in ancient times. But in modern days it is now filled with satellite dishes, likely for intelligence use as well as radio broadcast use.
I did not have the time to check out the facilities, but I think that if and when I decide to revisit Mount Tai for some more photography, this would be my only lodging option.

The Exchange Square 交易廣場 is a building complex located in Central, Hong Kong.
The property is the home of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong since the 1980s. It also houses many international banking and law firms ncluding Credit Suisse, Bank of Montreal, Lloyd George Management, Latham & Watkins, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Allen & Overy and Allens Arthur Robinson. It is also home to the consulates in Hong Kong of Argentina, Canada, Japan, and the American Club of Hong Kong.
Pictured is One Exchange Square and Two Exchange Square from the point of view from the entrance level—which, like many hotels in Hong kong, is not on the ground floor but at the elevated footbridge level.
This photo was taken at night so it is a bit grainy. And as usual, I find this extreme wide angle view up to be more interesting than other perspectives.

My mom suggested that instead of photographing seagulls from the 27th floor, I should just go downstairs and get a better view. Seems she is right—kind of. The aerial view is still good to get a macro view, but it is easier to photograph them in this side view.
I have always wanted to photograph birds, and in New York it used to mean that I have to venture far out in a special trip. But now that I am in Hong Kong, I just go downstairs. Super sweet!

I needed something to hold the iPad for photography but could not find the Manfrotto suction cup which I needed in Hong Kong so I picked up the Twelve South Hover Bar at the Apple Store today.
The Hover Bar is pretty well made, but tapping on the iPad vibrates it slightly so it is not perfect, though it is usable. Using the the Air Display app I can extend my monitor to iPad’s high res retina screen. Switched on Lightroom’s secondary window display and I have an instant thumbnail touchscreen display next to my monitor.
Pretty sweet. The only thing is that scrolling the thumbnails is a bit slow but keyboard navigation is still fairly usable.
As usual, pardon the mess. Cable management is a huge issue here…
Photographed with the iPhone 5, processed in Snapseed on the iPad 3.

Crashplan promises unlimited data for $9 / month = is it even possible? Too good to be true?
But 1. Amazon offers harddisk ship in data. 2. Crashplan likely have no such service.

Kang Youwei (simplified Chinese: 康有为; traditional Chinese: 康有為; pinyin: Kāng Yǒuwéi; Wade-Giles: K'ang Yu-wei; March 19, 1858–March 31, 1927), was a Chinese scholar, noted calligrapher and prominent political thinker and reformer of the late Qing Dynasty. He led movements to establish a constitutional monarchy and was an ardent Chinese nationalist and internationalist. His ideas inspired a reformation movement that was supported by the Guangxu Emperor but loathed by Empress Dowager Cixi. Although he continued to advocate for constitutional monarchy after the foundation of the Republic of China (1912–1949), Kang's political ideology was never put into practical application.

There is something beautiful about where building touch—especially when they are almost touching but not quite. That oh-so-sweet soft shadow is left behind.
The facade on the architecture are distinctive from one another: one old, one new. One weathered, battered and used. The other shiny and new. But the older one always has so much more character—texture, color, inconsistency—in other words, imperfection.
Imperfection is always so much more interesting. Perfection is boring, cold and uninteresting. Embrace imperfection. It would make a happier life—true to nature.

There is something gritty about this scene. I was reminded of some of iD Software’s many first person shooter games when I saw this. There are the pipes, the dirt, the multiplied boxes of no-one-knows-what. And then of course there are the lights.
To me this lives in the game world. It is interesting to me.

There’s this message notification on my Facebook account which are so old that I have no idea what they are but I can’t get rid of because Facebook has no “sort by unread” option. And so I just made a mental note that 7 = 0 for me. It is old because I think that I have been using Facebook this way for at least 3 years now.
I kind of suck it up all the years because I thought that well maybe some day they would fix it. Unfortunately even after Facebook has IPO’d for a long while and with so much funding they failed the user experience miserably.
Please fix! This is very annoying.
If it is unclear, this is a screenshot of the Facebook iPad app. But the same is seen on all other devices and I don't think that I can find those message nor can I clear that number 7 anywhere. Ugh.

Hmm... I checked my account today and my safety level is blank. What does it mean? Am I in trouble? Am I no longer safe? Looks like I'm still viewable in public (1), so that's a good thing. Does it mean that someone is reviewing my account? I'm having an anxiety attack now.

“The 1st and 7th circuit decisions mean that it is now technically legal to record on-duty police officers in every state in the country. Unfortunately, people are still being arrested for it. Police officers who want to make an arrest to intimidate would-be videographers can always use broadly written laws that prohibit public disorder, interfering with a police officer, or similar ordinances that give law enforcement wide discretion.”
Recording police illegal in the US? Supreme Court’s refusal to review recent case suggests otherwise.

Schools in Hong Kong has a very recognisable form. You don’t even need to look for the sign and you can immediately recognise that this is a school. It is a bit like SimCity that way. Education institutes with more funds can obviously afford to hire an architect to design something different, but most public schools follow the same design pattern. Often the only thing which differentiate one from another is the color of their facade, and that’s about it.

For quite some time now, and especially after “normal humans” started using Facebook, that fun which unites us all became an extreme boredom of emptiness. Similarly, while Twitter was fun I'm 2007, it is now filled with spam and marketing. I was so fed up with the BS in social media that I kind of unplugged from it for a while.
But then came along this very fun and crazy people in a group named “Generation WTF” who are supremely active in sharing everything crazy and everything awesome. Visual culture requires no word yet it touches the soul. I often tell people, to appreciate art, you need only to look at it. Art is a form of communication by itself. If you don’t get it, then move on, that message is not for you. But if you do get it, then that is the message for you.
So if WTF communicates to you, read more WTF. That is all.

Vectora is the corporate font for SML Universe. SML picked it mostly for his love for Adrian Frutiger. Another criteria which makes Vectora special is that Frutiger designed it after realizing that there was a need for sans serif type that could be read easily at small sizes, which in many ways make it ideal for designers who love setting tiny type. Yet more of importance to SML, is that it is not a very popular font, as such the typography set by SML would not look like everyone else’s, yet its character has all the sweetness seen in other more popular Frutiger fonts such as of course the Frutiger and Avenir family. The only unfortunate thing with using a not-so-popular font is that it does not have the niceties which SML cares about, such as real small caps and figure numerals (aka x-height numerals). So SML is considering drawing his own some time soon unless of course Linotype would be so kind to consider creating Vectora Next or equivalent.

I had so much fun last time that I decided to go back Skydive the Ranch for seconds (T2: Tandem 2)
I went with Adam S. Kirschner (Blog / YouTube) and his college buddie Brad for this round of crazy stunt.
Colin Sutherland could not make it because it was CME's birthday on Sunday. Eduardo F. Ortiz just jumped last week so he was not here either.
I am happy that my first skydiving video had generated enough buzz that has convinced Adam to come and he clearly had fun as well. See his video at YouTube: HiKirsch: Adam S. Kirschner - Skydiver
Last time was awesome, but this time I truly felt it. I still freaked a little when I jumped out of the plane, but it was all exciting shortly after... and for the first time around, I actually did enjoy the view very much.
Skydiving... highly recommended!
SML Skydive video remix
Two months have passed and I still have not had the chance to remix my first video, but with these new footage shot by Laszlo Andacs, I should have enough materials to create my upcoming dance track, Crazy is Good. Stay tuned. For more SML Music, visit smlMusic.com.
SML Thank You
+ Adam S. Kirschner: I would like to thank Adam S. Kirschner for inviting me to go with him on his first skydive! I love people who can work hard and play hard, and as I mentioned in my previous blog post, those are exactly the kind of quality I seek to work with. I am impressed, and I am really glad that Adam had a great time also. I Love ASK! Kudos!
+ Beth Schuman: I would like to thank Beth Schuman for jumpsuit wardrobe assistance. Beth had her first skydive the same day and I am very honored to be her witness as she signed away her life to her tandem instructor.
+ Brad Schwatz: I would like to thank Brad Schwatz for skydiving with us. I am also really glad that I have successfully convinced him to throw close to three hundred bucks to get a video on his first skydive. Brad is a shoe designer, and definitely has an eye for shoes. Fashion fashionistas warning: you have approximately five years to scoop him up before I am ready to build my fashion collection.
+ Denes Gutai: I would like to thank Denes Gutai for being my T2 skydive instructor. Denes is also the U.S. exclusive distributor for Intrudair, a line of quality jumpsuit products from Hungary. I checked out the site last night and those pants are hot! I also find the logo design of Intrudair to be really inspiring. Go check it out at intrudair.hu!
+ Jeff Daniels: I would like to thank Jeff Daniels for skydiving with Brad.
+ Laszlo Andacs: I would like to thank Lazslo Andacs for shooting and editing the wonderful video above. Originally I was expecting this video to be similar to the first one shot by Oren Peri, as such I am very impressed to see the diversity in creativity in not just how the same subject can be explored, but also in terms of style and perspective. Very well done!
If you are interested in freefall videography, digital imaging and computer editing by this professional skydiver stunt cameraman, check out his website at www.laszloimage.com.
+ Marcos (SML Data: no last name data unavailable): Thank you for being Adam's T1 skydive instructor.

The straight and curve lines of a wooden bench under a late afternoon sun at a park in Hong Kong.
The numbers 3, 6 and 9 have special numerological properties in Chinese culture.
+ 三: 3 sounds like the character 生 which means life.
+ 九: 9 has the same pronunciation as 久, which means longevity.
+ 六: 6 is the reverse of 9 pictographically. The two numbers 69 together forms the yin and the yang.
Thus 3, 6 and 9 together is a metaphor for a continually evolving long life of longevity. This is why I picked these numbers for my landline phone numbers. Although most Chinese people prefer the number 8 which sounds like 發 (fortune). Personally I prefer 6 and 9 as money for me is unimportant, but I would love to make a mark some time in history. Hopefully, maybe.

“Great architecture is not only about creating beautiful spaces, but also about creating spaces that inspire and uplift people.” — I. M. Pei
I. M. Pei (Ieoh Ming Pei) is one of my favorite architects of all time. I have watched a documentary about him years ago, and he also mentioned something along the lines of “the building doesn’t come alive until the people come inside”.
That highly paraphrased and possibly misquoted quote touched me, for that’s how I feel about apps and websites — you can design an app for a long time, but you don’t get to experience it until users start interacting with it.
This photo is a sculpture of a Barbarian, seen in games like Clash Royale and Clash of Clans, at the lobby of Supercell Headquarters in Helsinki. The Supercell HQ was famously built completely in wood, which has the nickname “Wood City”.
I don’t know which artist created the sculpture, but it brings the same excitement and energy as the characters in the game.
This was taken during CRL World Finals 2022, when creators (aka mostly YouTubers) around the world were invited to visit the office and enjoy the event.

Signal-Berg (literally Signal Mountain) is a park opened in 1984 and situated 98 meters above sea level at the top of a mountain in the center of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China. Its main entrance located at 17 Longshan Road.
At the top of the mountain is three large red domes (pictured) and a 6-storey high rotating observation deck which provides an ideal spot for observing the architecture and harbor view of Qingdao.
The hill was originally called Longshan (literally dragon hill) which is also commonly known as “Large Stone Mountain”). During the German occupation period, it was named Mount Diederichs (Diederichs-Berg) (also known as Signal Hill (Signal-Berg). During the Japanese occupation period, it was renamed as 神尾山 (Kamio Hill). In 1922 when Qingdao was finally returned to China, the Chinese government official named it as 信號山 信号山 Signal Hill.

Design Interact: Web Site of the Week (www.designinteract.com/sow/122004/)
Week of December 20: Project Rebirth Web Site
Project Rebirth is an online chronicle of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. As immediate and compelling as a physical visit, this project gives people the opportunity to observe and share in the progress of the reconstruction.
Newly released at the time the team was considering technical specifications, thisProject Rebirth Web site site uses the FlashMX development environment to full effect. Functioning as a portal to extensive content, the beauty of this Web site lies in its ability to be current and historical. With a visual design that appropriately takes a back seat to the content, it records ideas, images and interviews in their original context while also allowing for their evolution.
Primary content consists of a series of video images (presented in a timeline format) captured by six, 35mm time-lapse cameras positioned by Project Rebirth around the World Trade Center site. They shoot one frame every five minutes—and will continue to do so for ten years. The images enable the viewing of the rebuild as it occurs on any date; in seconds, visitors can see the footage of a single day. There are also interviews with reconstruction overseers, journals by filmmakers and video of major milestones in the redevelopment efforts.
Project Rebirth Web siteThe key challenge for the developers was to create an interface that would incorporate what would ultimately be ten years of film footage, that didn’t inundate visitors and yet communicated the passage of substantial amounts of time. Their solution is an interactive, XML-driven timeline that delivers fluid viewing of time-lapse footage. It provides an appropriate time-based metaphor that also does a nice job of integrating video, audio, imagery and text-based content into a single interface. The time-based experience allows access to any moment in time and provides the ability to navigate the Web site by date and/or event. Our one complaint: The link from the home page, to this main feature, looks far too much like header art. We would have liked to see billing more in line with its importance.
This collaborative effort between Project Rebirth and IconNicholson began in the summer of 2003 and the site launched in September 2004. On average, visitors are staying on the site 19 minutes, which is significant in comparison to Internet-wide stays at sites with similar content. Interestingly, international users comprise 30% of all visitors.

There are many Twitter tools now that allow you to access multiple Twitter accounts at once but there is no tool available that I know of that give you an at-a-glance overview of Twitter RT mentions across multiple Twitter accounts. This pipe is created specifically to serve this purpose.
It uses the Twitter Search API to look for Twitter mentions of @smluniverse @smlbw @smlfineart @smlgfxdesign @sml_photography @seeminglee @crazy_is_good @smlmen @smlviz @lifecelebrates.
Tada! No more going into multiple Twitter accounts just to look at them. :)
I have been cheating and doing time-lapse videography with video sped up at 1000% but it does not have the quality which I seek. So now I am doing things the proper way.
Pictured is the Canon EOS 7D + the Canon EF 17-40 f/L USM mounted on tripod and set to shoot at 10-second intervals using the Canon TC-80N3 remote.
This way I get full resolution RAW for every frame, thus good enough even to play as a 4K cinema movie while having the sharpness I needed for the video and require no unnecessary time spent rendering the 10x speed increase inside Premiere. Not to mention that it saves space also.

The blue point is where I take most of the photos for the serenity series, where SML Universe HKG is located at. The great span of ocean is the Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong. And the pin point location is where Yim Tin Tsai [1] seen in the previous photo is located at.
The luxury residential area is midway between the golf club and the pin drop. It is actually quite far away from the burial grounds. Telephoto lens have a way of compressing distance so this is why you feel that they are very close away but in fact they are not.

US Mobile phones are always locked so I never really had any SIM cards to play with til I moved to Hong Kong. What I find interesting is that they all comes in the form of a credit card size with information on them. The SIM card is cased in a breakout – then the micro SIM is further broken out from its larger brother. A fairly usable design. I dig it.

This photo was taken into Photoshop for some H+S specifically for the shadow area. The color cast is somewhat troubling so it was taken into the L*a*b mode for curve adjustments — which is by far the best method to tweak Lightness curves without affecting color information. The Lab mode additionally allows for color contrast tweaks which are more natural because it does not affect the lightness information (unlike RGB mode where color + lightness is intertwined.)

We stopped by the Siberian Tiger Park (東北虎林園) at Harbin (哈爾濱) during our trip to Dongbei (東北). The park was built in 1996 and contains an open area with hundreds of tigers. At present, it is the largest natural park for wild Siberian tigers in the world.
You can definitely see the tigers up close and personal here. And there are so many of them. The ride through the open area takes approximately 30-45 minutes and is well worth it. I took my 100-400 with the 7D with me but even this photo was shot at 200mm because it was that close.

With this capture, I figured out why it is that people who does ND LE always have a bit of architecture or rocks in the scene that sit still, as they provide interesting contrast to an exposure which looks almost fake otherwise.
It is an interesting way to show motion also, as I have learned.
I will take my tripod to the shore as requested. Stay tuned.

Why should you invest on a good tripod? Well, for situations like these where you need to give 100% trust that your camera won’t accidentally drop from the sky and fall onto people on the street.
Pictured is the Canon EOS 7D + Canon EF 70-200 f/4L USM + Canon EF 1.4x Extender mounted on Manfrotto tripod + doing aerial timelapse of 1-second intervals of people jogging + bicycling down on the Ma On Shan Promenade 27 floors below.
I am shooting JPEGs for this round so hopefully I won't spend the whole day exporting JPEGs from Lightroom again.

The sand is a super sturdy tripod for the Canon EOS M, apparently.
I discovered today that there is a beach near me in walking distance. So I took my EOS M to see if it is too far to lug my SLR with me. 15 minutes. Not too bad at all. Expect to see some long exposure photography with water soon.

The card is basically a set of questions or exercises - point, type specimen, line, pattern, half-tone, grey-scale spectrum, moire - designed to test the machine's effectiveness or value.
The testcard should explore not only the effective (proper?) function of the photocopier, but also any other qualities (Test the limits of its language/your language)
Investigate both the history and teh working mechanics of thsi machine, then (week 3-4) extend the scope of the testcard to include this kind of informaion.

It all started when Humble was six, with a rather gleefully coloured rendition of the Jabberwocky. Recognizing this art thang as a means to get the attention he was otherwise too shy to seek, he stuck with it despite not being very good. In high school, he was somehow talked into drawing an ongoing comic strip for his school magazine. With free reign in regards to content, and a school-wide audience, how could he possibly say no? Tragically, Possum Man only survived to his second adventure, before Humble grew weary of everyone asking, “What’s up with that guys hands?” Or “Did you mean to draw her face like that?”. From there it was straight out of high school and off to university to start a Bachelor of Arts. He flunked out within his first two years, after coming to the enlightened conclusion that getting stoned all day might actually be a viable career path.

The ferry ride to Manly offers scenic views along the way. Unlike the harbours in many cities where commercial transports dominate, the Sydney Harbour is well used by its occupants for leisure purposes, and there are sail boats everywhere.
Pictured is a fragile sail boat near some beautiful rocks at the tip of an island. Backtracking on the GPS shows that this tip is called the North Head and is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park.
