It was a quiet and sunny afternoon, and Rainbow Teddy (彩熊 RT @rainbowteddy8) wanted to play with the kids outside. In a kids playground nearby, RT found a metal jeep designed for his tiny figure. At first, there was another boy playing there also, but RT was quickly dismissed because of how he looks.
Boy: You are so weird. You have hair all over you.
SML: But he is a very good boy. He won’t hurt you.
Boy’s dad: Get away from my boy at once! Bears are dangerous. I saw it on TV. Why would you be such a careless parent to bring a bear to the playground?!
SML: He really doesn’t harm anyone…
(The dad and son team disappeared quicker than wind into thin air)
RT: It’s ok, SML, I am used to it. People always look at me and said that I am small, furry, ugly, weird, crazy, different, but I am perfectly happy playing by myself. Would it be nice to be loved by others? Sure, but learning to survive on my own makes me stronger.
SML: I am glad that you see the world that way. Now say cheese to the camera and let’s enjoy this wonderful day!

As an interaction designer, I love art works which uses technology and are interactive. I also love truly crazy ideas. So this piece by japanese collective Chim↑Pom is a by-chance encounter of pure awesomeness.
This work intends to provide an alternative source to energy by converting “libido” to electricity. Chim↑Pom inserted tiny erotic ads in newspaper to solicit calls from “needy” male adults. When they call this number, the machine will convert radio waves into electricity by an optical sensor with a relay. This “invention” is currently patent-pending, apparently.
When this work is shown at Art Basel Hong Kong, a similar ad was placed in a newspaper in Hong Kong. To figure out how this works, I called the number—if you zoom into the photo you will see my number on the iPhone. When it rings, the light bulb lights up through the machine. The calls are real, also — as the director of the gallery told me that quite a few people called multiple times thinking that it is a legit number.

Here is the side view of the sculpture seen previously [1]. As you can see, the sculpture is formed by four curvatures, and from this view it appears as a bent square.
It is so minimal yet so magical at the same time. Genius—I wish more art is like this.

Constructed from steel and wrapped in a dense black flock flannel that absorbs light, 'Squaring the Circle' challenges the viewers sensibilities: on entering the room they see a black circular sculpture, but in the huge mirror opposite their ‘impossible reflection’ reveals them viewing a black square. 'Squaring the Circle' argues that if every method of inquiry reveals a particular facet of the truth or the nature of reality; their seemingly antithetical forms should find reconciliation in the knowledge, that ‘one-ness’ has a plurality of embodiments.
'Squaring the Circle' was premiered at OMR as one of 5 new works shown in Troika's solo exhibtion 'The far side of reason' in April 2013.

Troika is a London based studio founded by Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel who are known for their experimental practise and projects that employ a cross-disciplinary approach and intersect between sculpture, architecture, and contemporary installation.
They met while studying at the Royal College of Art and subsequently started their studio in 2003, emerging as an integrated practice that creates work collectively through detailed research, dialogue and experiment.
Often merging technology with their projects as a point of departure paired with a particular interest in perception and the spatial experience, their work explores the intersection of rational thought, observation and the changing nature of reality and human experience.
And while their work is often filled with polarities — solitude and interaction, transition and permanence, the artificial and the natural — their interest lies within man's resolve to synthesize these opposites.
Since establishing the studio in 2003 Troika's work has been exhibited, amongst others, at the Victoria & Albert Museum London, The Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Britain and MoMA New York. In 2010 Troika were selected to create three art installations for the UK Pavilion at the World Expo Shanghai. Troika's work is represented in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum Jerusalem, British Council, The Art Institute of Chicago, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum Of Modern Art New York.
Troika has authored 'Digital by Design', Thames and Hudson, 2008; and, in 2009, won the D&AD Yellow Pencil for their digital sculpture 'Cloud' in London Heathrow Terminal 5 and ‘Palindrome’ at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2011.

Using thousands of yellow plastic straws as raw materials, Italian artist Francesca Pasquali created a landscape like no others. It matters not if you can paint or not, if you have the will to create, magic always follows.
In her own words, “Even if plastic is a new material, the technique of interlacing it in pre-constituted nets is connected to the past. It makes it live again in the shape of sculpture, which spreads out towards the space around, creating various texturised effects. Observing nature itself, I transfer the essential being of it. The interlacing forms transform the industrial material into soft and sensual shapes.”

This is one of my favorite Chinese snack. It is very popular in South East Asia and it has different names depending on region. It is known as krupuk or kerupuk in Indonesia; keropok in Malaysia; kropek in the Philippines; bánh phồng tôm in Vietnam and xiapian (蝦片 虾片 "prawn chips") in Chinese.
The ones seen in the photo was photographed at 東海酒家 East Ocean Restaurant in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It is served as a light hors d’oeuvre before the meal and is infused with black pepper, which is very yummy.

Being able to identify what I am not good at is difficult, so being diagnosed with ADHD + Bipolar was mostly a blessing as it became far easier for me to identify possible weaknesses using available statistics models.
What I suck at: time management, organization of physical space, people skills. By noting what I am not good at, I can then tackle the problem by delegating work which I cannot complete to others who are excellent at it.
+/ Since I suck at time management, I do not sign myself up on any large projects unless it has an excellent project manager.
+/ Since I suck at physical space organization, I find that it's often best if I date OCD people — ADHD/Bipolar + OCD = match made in heaven.
+/ Since I suck at people skills, I make sure that there is a “people person” co-host present when I wish to organize any event.
Apologies notes and thank you notes run through most of my daily communication. As such I was surprised to see that the majority of business stationary design jobs do not include these as standard deliverables. For my own business, I rarely find the need for business cards so I don't really print them (yet). However the first thing that I will be printing which I find to be most crucial are thank you notes and apologies notes such as these.
This will likely be printed on postcards so I can write + mail as needed.

This work by Chinese artist Xu Zhen 徐震 (b.1977, Shanghai) is titled “Jiang Shan 江山”. The English translation said that means “land” but there is much more to that word. 江 is the lake, 山 is mountains. On the surface it just says mountains + lakes, but it is in fact the word used by Chinese emperors to describe the kingdom which they own.
With that in mind it would be easier to understand why there is a warrior in seen with a horse in this collage which looks more like a sculpture (mostly because it is). Although the landscape resembles that of China, the warrior’s outfit is nothing that of Chinese origin, but appears more like that they originated from Europe. This reminded me of 八國聯軍 Eight-Nation Alliance [1], the joint alliance of Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, whose military forces invaded China in 1900.
Countless wars happened in the beginning of 1900s in China to take hold of the “Jiang Shan 江山” of China all in the name of “democracy”. The same wars are being fought in the Middle East where third parties intervene in the name of “good” but there is only evil as I see it.
I do not know what is intended by the artist. I would love to know his intention, but art as a form of communication is rarely linear and is somewhat magical that way.

In most parts of the world, seeing high-performance sports cars on the road is a rare sighting. In Hong Kong, these exotic birds are everywhere are such a commonplace that no one really pays attention to them.
Pictured is a green Porsche 911 GT3 RS [according to Wikipedia it is also known as 977 GT3 RS (Porsche’s internal designator)] waiting impatiently behind a traffic light for his turn to roar while cranking his engines for all to hear—but as seen in the photo, no one pays much attention to its presence.
Designed as a higher performance version of the Porsche 911 sports car, the GT3 begins its lineage way back in 1973 as the 911 RS. The RS is short for the German RennSport, literally "racing sport" in English. 997 GT3 RS is the road car version of the 911 RS racing series.
I don’t know how to drive but I get my fair share of what is available in the market just walking around in random neighbourhoods in Hong Kong. Getting the newest + greatest + shiniest toys of all is a bizarre consumerism culture in Hong Kong. Observation is often a far better indicator for what may trend in the future than reading analytics reports (which are, by definition, history already).

I found it funny that there is a “Manly Ferry” at the pier. Is there a girly ferry somewhere also? It turns out that Manly is a surf beach in Sydney frequented by both locals and tourists. I did eventually go and it did not disappoint.

The instruments we use changes the way we play. The track was recorded and played live directly on the iPad using Orphion’s “3rds Matrix” grid.
The natural position of my right hand touches A4 and A#4. The natural position of my left hand touches F4 and D4. By shifting my hands a note to the left and to the top right, I get RH: F4 F#4 LH: C#4 A#3 and then RH: A#4 B4 LH: F#4 D#4.
The whole song are essentially repeated notes of the following
1L: D4 F4 1R: A4 A#4
2L: A#3 C#4 2R: F4 F#4
3L: D#4 F#4 3R: A#4 B4
I don't know what key these are in. I just play. And so while as a classically trained pianist I am conscious of the notes and key signature when I play on a conventional keyboard, Orphion’s seemingly illogical layout renders some nice experimental results which I enjoy.
I use the in-app recorder to record my live playing which I then email myself as an M4A file. The file is then placed into Ableton Live where I manually wrap my human-playing into something which sounds somewhat on time — though obviously the nice rubato are lost. I will work on getting something that is less machine like perhaps.
Then I layered some repeated tracks, and added some ping pong to the piece to give it some nuance together with some Lexicon reverb goodness. Mastered with Ozone 5 and voila.

No noise reduction on this one. I think that what I wish to stress is that it is usable at ISO 12800—not that it is grain free.
The main challenge with the 6D is that it does not have as much AF point in low light, so for fast moving objects you don’t really have time to “recompose” so to speak. But certainly you would not see me running around with a 70-200 f/4 + 1.4 Extender at night with the 7D.

Wrangling with cables is every nerd’s daily routine. I don’t actually think that there is a solution to this. I think that I have bought at least 4 strips of power outlets since moving back to Hong Kong in 2012.

NiMH batteries are the best if you want to get rapid firing action on flash. You know why I can strobe non-stop and keep up the high frame rate of the 7D? NiMH. Use them. They are awesome.

Well known for her use of polka dots and her thematic interest in psychedelic colors in environmental installations, the artworks by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (草間 彌生 or 弥生, Kusama Yayoi) is hard to miss. Although she is well in her 80s (b. 1929), her work has a child-like curiosity which is like no other.
These larger-than-life flowers bear more resemblance to one which could be found on video games like Mario Brothers than reality, but it is precisely their magical qualities which made them so appealing to the masses. It is thus no wonder that Kusama’s work has consistently performed strongly in the art market world wide and is considered one of the most important living artists today.

Car is the new canvas? Just when you thought that mixed media cannot get more insane, Korean artist Inkie Whang (b. 1951) proves that WTF is the darling in contemporary works.
It is a scenery of Chinese (Korean?) traditional painting, but with the aid of computers, Inkie Whang digitalise and pixelated the essence and turn them into an abstract work of the original. Although he works with computer to create the template, the artist applies his building blocks—plastic circles in this case—onto the canvas (or car?!) by hand, which shows crafts and workmanship like no others.

Whang, Inkie depicts traditional landscape views by employing various materials in his works including Swarovski crystals, silicon and plastic blocks (Legos). He paints the wooden background with thick layers and digitalizes the oriental landscape into small pixels, which is created with no outer lines but only with the materials. The process of authoritative craftsmanship through computer-aided manipulation alters the image that causes the abstract effect of the original image. Through his experimental style, the works connects the contemporary life with Korean traditional history, which is to modernize Korean identity and Korean aesthetics. He represented for the Korean Pavilion of Venice Biennale in 2003.

“Rainbow Teddy made shorts from Swatch” #LGBT #Crazyisgood #hacks
Someone on Instagram commented that Rainbow Teddy (RT) needs a rainbow tshirt [1]. Until then, RT had no idea that he had been a nudist all his life. “Why wear anything if no one complains?” RT said. “I think that I will make myself a pair of rainbow shorts instead.”
Being a total hacker that he is, RT went to SML’s Swatch drawer and connected all of them together into a chain around his furry body. “Well SML can’t wear of them at any time anyway, so I might put them to use. Besides, I would never forget the time this way.”
“I can make sizes available for human also. I will need a lot of Swatch but if you are too lazy to do it yourself you can email me,” RT said.

In 2005, a site-specific installation called “The Gates” by Bulgarian artist Christo Yavacheff and French artist Jeanne-Claude (aka Christo and Jeanne-Claud) was seen at Central Park in New York City [1].
This was not an art installation—just a pathway at a public housing development in Hong Kong. But its resemblance is uncanny.
The Chinese character 门 came to mind, which is the simplified version of the character 門 — and it means literally the “gate” or the “door”, thus giving new meaning to both the high art and this everyday object.
The yellow stripe paint serves the function of alerting the elderly. I quite like it. Form follows function.

The MTR stations in Hong Kong are color coded. Pictured is the station for 西灣河 Sai Wan Ho. Color coding stations serve a few purpose:
+ Recognizable during rush hours. If you have been on the metro in Hong Kong or Tokyo, you know that what NYC consider “crowdy” is no comparison. When you can barely move, there is no chance that you would be able to see what station it is in. But it is easy to see that you are surrounded by colors—yellow in this case.
+ Trans-cultural. Color coding transcends all language barrier. Although Chinese and English combined cover most of the languages spoken by the locals, travels to Hong Kong might not read these languages well. But most people (with the exception of the color blind, which is 1% male) would be able to recognise colors—so all they need to know is that they have to get off at the yellow station. This strategy works well for all.
+ Mood stabilising. Most of the colors utilised are in a heavy saturated spectrum. Colors have a psychological effect to humans. Whether you like it or not, cheery colors do relieve some of the stress. And workers in Hong Kong are highly stressed. Daily overtime is expected to most—and not just the bankers. I have found cheery paints painted on various public housing architecture in Hong Kong and I reason that perhaps any bit of ambient device can help.
I love design which serves a function. And the MTR is a great example of well done information design at work.

Landscape photographers know that sunsets and sunrises are the best time for photography. The sun’s brightness is greatly diminished when at the horizon. At a relatively lower altitude, the clouds are rendered in a golden shade of off-white, thus balancing the overall color composition.
Human’s color vision is governed by two axis: Green ←→ Magenta and Blue ←→ Yellow [1], which is precisely why working in Photoshop’s Lab color space [2] has an advantage as you are balancing the what humans see and not what the monitor represents (which is RGB).

Branded as the L6 and L8, the Lamborghini cigarettes designate their product lines with respect to the amount of nicotine in each cigarette. Hong Kong cigarette packaging is very informational. You know exactly how much nicotine and tar you are consuming. Unlike in the US where cigarettes’ nicotine content is a complete guessing game, at a glance you know on the packaging that the L8 contains 8mg tar and 0.8mg nicotine. The Davidoff which I smoke usually contains 10mg tar and 0.9mg nicotine. Knowing this also makes buying Nicorettes easier.
How does it taste? Pretty good. I don’t really think that I will be changing brands any time soon. But I do still miss my additive-free cigarettes in New York: American Spirit and Nat Sherman’s, which I cannot find in Hong Kong at all. International travel is no longer an option either as cigarette allowance is 19 count (1 box of 20 minus 1) which is why the trash bin before custom is a cemetery for that single cigarette disposal. It is stupid really. Hong Kong Gov should just create a cigarette recycling bin I think…

Yes it was shot on the same day as the goalkeeper’s permanent stand [1]. I have started to process photographs independently from each other so I can keep a fresh eye.
In the past I always work on the whole series and then post them all by one. Not only does it make my Flickr street incredibly boring to look at, processing very similar photographs on the same day within short intervals is also very boring. So I now just pick on photographs which I want to work with that day. And this works out far better.

More WTF artworks which short-circuited my logical unit—Mickey and gas masks. Kata Legrady’s art work is a chance encounter between objects from two distinct universes: weapons of mass destruction vs that of childhood memories.
This work speaks to me mostly because I am very against warfare in the international arena—politicians candy-coating messages to instil suffer and pains to others and treating everything as child’s play. Another messaging I see is that messaging with political agenda is being inserted into mainstream media with questionable ethics. Whether these are the artist’s original intentions is unclear, but what is clear is that it summarises the current state of affairs very well.
Kata Legrady was born in 1974 at Bacs in Hungary. She studied music and singing at the Pecs Conservatoire before finally opting for the plastic arts. She lives and works in Hanover, Germany.

One of the Little Green Men (LGM) from Toy Story was also at the photoshoot with Rainbow Teddy (RT) and Daddy Smurf that night [1] but he has a different opinion regarding how to use the strobe.
LGM: I think that a bare bulb is better than SML’s ceiling bounce.
SML: Why?
LGM: If I hold the flash this way, it highlights how private your date is.
RT: But we are just hanging out—SML was lying. We are definitely not on a date. My love is for Tigger.
SML: Really? So where is Tigger?
RT: Well you did say that he was too big to tag along…
LGM: I heard that also!
SML: …
So basically depending on your needs, different lighting setup gives you a different effect, and this capture illustrates a few things:
1. The stadium is very dark.
2. The flash by itself covers a very small area.
3. If you bounce from the ceiling it creates a much larger area.
4. Bounced flash is able to create a big soft light.
5. Unbounced bare bulb flash is able to create a small but harsh light.
So which do you use? It depends on the look you are going for.

Never let who you are limit what you can do. I honestly believe that anyone can accomplish anything in life if they have the will to do it.
Pictured are two runners seen at the Ma On Shan Promenade after they have finished their run and are walking home. One of the men is visually impaired. But he is able to run outside with the help of a guide runner. A cotton rope binds their hands together, thus allowing the visually impaired athlete to be able to run out in open air.
I have never seen anything like this before. Hong Kong is awesome. And very accessible. Crazyisgood. SML Love.

A half-raised American flag was seen hanging at the tail end of the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) next to one of the six AV-8B Harrier attack planes currently deployed on the Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy [1].
Made by the McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), the AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) ground-attack aircraft [2]. Since in service, the AV-8Bs have provided close air support for ground troops and performed armed reconnaissance, thus proving themselves versatile assets for the US military.
Of particular interest to me is the cockpit—as from far away I had thought that there was a person inside, only to discover during processing that it was just how the seat was designed.
I do not know why the flag is half-raised. The ship is not currently in active duty for combat according to available sources, so it might have been lowered to mourn the losses from the Boston Marathon bombings which happened earlier this week [3].

More work by Julie Roberts (b. 1963, UK) seen recently at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013, which features British boarding school life from bygone years.
Much like her oil painting seen earlier [1], her indian ink work features very fine lines accented with dots, rings and bubbles. In some ways, her paintings appear to get its style from strokes mostly associated with markers (which I believe this is — even though it was cryptically designated as “indian ink”).
Some true gems in small sizes.

Oblivious to the chaos surrounding around him, Rainbow Teddy (RT) got into the “zone” trying to figure out the best move to counter SMLBioBot’s opening while the red blitz chess clock is ticking away.
“You know, I am a nice guy,” RT said. “SMLBioBot has agreed to play chess over Skype with his Mr G next weekend, so I figured that I would help him out a little bit. There aren’t many gay geeks out there who can play chess well and I am just doing my part to get him up to speed.”
RT is pictured here with SML’s beloved Fischer designed chess set with dotted bishops so it is easy to tell the pawns from the bishops even when photographed head on from above. Design SML Love. :)
