Born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, Germany in 1939, A.R. Penck is the pseudonym for the artist, a name he used as he attempted to go under the radar to exhibit his artworks for the international audience while being actively pursued by the East Germany communist regime. His relationship with Galerie Michael Werner is significant, as it was this gallery where Penck would have his first public one-man show in 1969.

Penckâs paintings are known by its flat and pictographic imagery of human figures seen in Egyptian hieroglyphsâwhat the critics called âneo-primitivistââand other totemic forms. His early works suggest influence from Picasso, but having been turned down by academies in Dresden and East Berlin in his academic years, his work is different than those with more formal attitudes.

Besides art, Penck also has his love for jazz music. A keen drummer, he took every opportunity to play with the best jazz musicians of the late 1980s. His love for music has obvious influence, as his paintings also often feature lively improvisation of forms and compositions.

A.R. Penck lives and works in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dublin and New York.

One man’s trash is another’s treasure. John Angus Chamberlain (April 16, 1927 – December 21, 2011)’s sculptural works are of pure magic, where their raw materials started lives as that from old car wrecks into something which is best described as a three-dimensional Abstract Expressionist (AbEx) forms.

The downside of using trash as raw materials is that they can be misinterpreted. Apparently, in 1973, two 300-pound metal pieces by Chamberlain were mistaken for junk and carted away as they sat outside a gallery warehouse in Chicago.

“My work has nothing to do with car wrecks,” he has said. “I believe common materials are the best materials.”

In line with my own deadyard photography series, however, I love these works. It is a bouquet made out of trash but one which is fantastic in every way. Crazyisgood.

Winter in Hong Kong is coming to and end, and the 農曆新年 Chinese New Year is quickly approaching (next week).

I can never really tell when the seasons begin using the Gregorian calendar (the de facto international standard) [1]. But as the name of the Chinese traditional calendar 農曆 (literally agricultural calendar) [2], it is very accurate in predicting when the seasons begin and end.

The flowers are starting to bloom. I am not very sure which one this is, but it looks like 桃花 [3] Peach flower [4] to me. I love peaches, but I love peach flowers even more.

Rainbow Teddy (RT) got super psyched this morning because @galexks sent some friends on Instagram for him to meet [1].

“These teddies are so cute. I wonder where they’re at. I want to meet them!” RT said. “I am bored to death being stuck with the social-phobe SML all the time. I _definitely_ need a social life.”

Ok, RT I will fly you on FedEx to meet some new people. For now just be patient. SML is working on the logistics for your first-class airfare right now.

The work by masters are easily observed by their decisive and reductive brush strokes. You don’t need the excessive marks to illustrate your intention.

Titled “Femme et oiseaux” or “Woman and birds” in English, Spanish painter Joan Miró painted this when he was 73 (1966), which is arguably the late stage of an artist’s life.

Miró’s flat and organic forms accented with color planes are a signature style of his paintings. He is generally considered a surrealist, though his work is very different than other surrealist artists like Dali. His abstract forms show some influence from Picasso, though his use of primary colors are unique.

He is one of my favorite artists of all times. Great works are simply that—great. It matters not whether they are popular or not.

# Joan Miró

Joan Miró i Ferrà (Catalan pronunciation: [ʒuˈam miˈɾo]) (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city in 1975.

Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

Pink little flowers are starting to bloom at the garden downstairs. I like little flowers—flowers with no name but together contribute every bit of joy for me everyday.

The sharp eyed would note that the leaves are not perfect. The perfectionists would likely not like the fact that I have decided on the focusing on the leaves and not the flowers either.

But you know, perfection will not exist if not for imperfection. And a photograph without imperfection is not really a depiction of reality. I celebrate imperfections and I celebrate all. If I paint flowers, they will not be perfect either. So yes, it is intentional.

Summary

Typographic landscape of a city described through visually counting from 1 to 100.

Setup

These were shot with my first digital camera, the Sony Mavica FD7.

Statement

This was my first photography project. It started out as a project for a typography class while I was in college. Like most graphic design assignments at Yale, it was very open ended. We were asked to show the experience of a city through the language of typography. I have always been interested in numbers, and I as such I decided to run around New Haven and photograph numbers which represent the city, from 1 to 100.

The series is to be projected on the wall as slideshow. The numbers are recognizably New Haven, and most who have been in New Haven can recognize the sense of time and space as they go through the series. Some commented that it reminded them of Sesame Street.

It was so successful that I thought of extended this to different neighborhoods in New York, but I never had the time to work on more of them after college, and as such I have only completed the first and only one...

The original series was displayed via a conventional slide projector. In order to best-simulate the original intention on a computer, view the set as a slideshow and set the speed to fast.

Rows of trees planted with bright purple flowers can be seen at the south east corner of the 香港會議展覽中心 Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). These cheery blossoms are called 洋紫荊 Bauhinia blakeana—the official flowers for Hong Kong. They are also known as the 香港蘭 Hong Kong Orchid Tree.

The 灣仔政府大樓 Wanchai Tower nearby houses many of the Hong Kong Government’s operations. Many of the international consulates are also very nearby—The Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Itly, New Zealand and Venezuela Consulates are all at the 中環廣場 Central Plaza next door. As the official flower for the city of Hong Kong which can be seen on Hong Kong’s flag as well as currency, 洋紫荊 Bauhinia blakeana trees planted at this block are especially well cultivated.

Towards the north end of the block is the 金紫荊廣場 Golden Bauhinia Square. It is considered a tourist destination as that was where the ceremonies for the handover of Hong Kong and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was held in July 1997.
