Sometimes the simplest things are the most beautiful. These are water patterns left behind by the boat during my boat ride in Sanya.

Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.

Ever since the EOSM has disappeared into the SML Blackhole [1], 彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) has been working hard to continue doing photography with the 7D. Most recently, he became interested in the 100-400 because with the super telephoto he deduced that he might be able to find some other teddies nearby.

But in reality, this photo was mainly to show what that US$4 umbrella looks like. It is not silky smooth—to be frank, it has all kinds of wrinkling on its surface, even the bokeh could not hide that fact. But as you can see, a reflector is a reflector is a reflector. It does its job, and for a starving artist like SML, any penny saved is another bread on the table…

RT needed a stool on the chair because alas the Manfrotto tripod could only go as low as that, apparently.

Pictured: RT with the 7D + battery grip + 100-400 unextended. Shot with the 6D + 24-70 f/2.8L with 90EX as remote strobe + 580EX with bargain umbrella on top left, and another 430EX bargain umbrella on top right. At this rate SML should be able to afford some lightbox + monolights soon. Stay tuned!

I have always wanted to photograph tracks, but I am not athletic so I don’t visit these places often. But I discovered about the Ma On Shan Sports Ground yesterday. And their tracks are pristine, with very beautiful forms.

Here is another sculpture by Chiharu Shiota seen at ARNDT during Art Basel Hong Kong 2013.

A sea a black threads attached to a metal frame suspends a horn in mid-air. The threads create a cocoon, a place for the musical instrument to float in air like magic. It feels like that you should be able to reach it, but you cannot as the web is in the way. The thread web creates the volume, even though the volume is mostly made with air. It is contained, yet it is not.

It is an academically sound creation. Serious yet fun at the same time — and it is easy to see why I absolutely adore this artist by the end of the show.

A woman in Chinese traditional dress 旗袍 Qipao lies in a bed of colorful flowers served in a highly decorated dinner plate fitting for a banquet. She is headless and armless except with her legs extending out in a highly sexualised pose. She is without identity, and she does not appear to have a choice but to lie there for all to feast on.

This ceramic / porcelain sculpture by Chinese artist Liu Jianhua 刘建华 (劉建華) may be funny at first, but is a social commentary about the anonymous and exploitable exoticism once associated with China in the West.

The imagery of the limbless sends a shock down my memory lane, as it reminds me of one of ancient China’s most torturous punishment: removing every limb from a person and stick them onto a vase as a permanent fixture of shame. And for this commentary it is both brilliant and depressing.

Before Liu Jianhu went to study sculpture in art school, he spent many years working at porcelain factories in Jingdezhen (景德镇市 景德鎮市). Jingdezhen was known to be the finest city for porcelain / china production since the Song Dynasty (宋朝), and it is no doubt from his years of working which allowed the artists to excel in producing such exquisite craftsmanship.

Haluk Akakçe (born 1970 in Turkey) is a contemporary artist living and working in New York and Istanbul whose work explores the intersections between society and technology through video animations, wall paintings and sound installations.

His other work which integrates technology is more interesting. Though as an expression of forms this is worth a look.

Teenagers playing a game of basketball until the wee hours in Hong Kong.

The basketball courts in New York always appeared somewhat rundown for my taste. Here in Hong Kong the sports facilities are fairly well run and maintained. They have opening hours. The gates are locked after closing. People sign up for use of facilities in person or online (I believe). Typical fees are around HK$20 (~US$2.50) per hour.

Also here you see the interesting urban planning by the Hong Kong Government. They would pack high-rise residential areas really dense and then plant a giant park in the middle. It is a lot like how you would do it SimCity. A bit fun.

The architectural facade of the public housing developments at (恆安邨 Heng On Estate) were painted in 紫色 purple and 綠色 green. These color choices seem completely random at first, but when the 洋紫荊 Bauhinia blakeana bloom from early November to the end of March, it made a lot of sense.

These orchid trees, also known as 香港蘭 Hong Kong Orchid Trees, could be seen were planted in rows near the entrance to the 恆安 Heng On MTR station in 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan.

洋紫荊 Bauhinia blakeana is an orchid tree of the genus Bauhinia with large thick leaves and striking purplish red flowers (豆科蘇木亞科羊蹄甲屬有花植物). Although now cultivated in many areas, it originated in Hong Kong in 1880 and apparently all of the cultivated trees derive from one cultivated at the Hong Kong Botanic Gardens and widely planted in Hong Kong starting in 1914.

In 1965, it was officially adopted as the floral emblem of Hong Kong (香港法定代表花卉 aka 香港市花) by the Urban Council. Since 1997 the flower appears on Hong Kong's coat of arm, its flag and its coins.

Windsurfing (滑浪風帆) is an important sport in Hong Kong—mainly because the only athlete to ever win an Olympic medal representing Hong Kong is a woman named 李麗珊 [1] Lee Lai-Shan [2].

Last year some friends from Sydney asked if I ever see people surf at the harbor outside my window, and I said probably not. And as usual, I stand corrected. I spotted four this afternoon. Super sweet.

Nice minimalistic geometric forms cast against the very complex forms of the waves. I especially like the impressionistic reflection on the water. I think that I will likely process this into a black and white in the future because it is screaming for it.

Located on the shore of Tolo Harbour northwest of Ma On Shan in the New Territories in Hong Kong, there lies a place called Wu Kai Sha (Chinese: 烏溪沙) which is familiar to many locals. It is famous for a campsite—the Wu Kai Sha Youth Village of YMCA, which is often used by Christians in Hong Kong as a place for retreat. Shown here is the beach which lies directly adjacent to the campsite, which is located at the end of the Ma On Shan Promenade.

Because the ND filters I have add such a strange vignette, I also shot some photos at the beach without it. Here the vignette is natural to the 17-40, and I really want to find some graduated ND filter soon in Hong Kong but I do not know where to get them near by. Simply put there is no equivalent of B&H in this part of the world.

I took my tripod down to the Ma On Shan Promenade today to do a 360 degree pano. I don’t yet have a pano head so the tiling closest to the lens cannot really be tiled correctly. But here again you see why this place is magical.

On the left hand side you see the Tolo Harbour, with Science Park to the left. And on the right, first in the middle is the Horizon Hotel, followed by some private development properties, the mountain seen nested between all the buildings is Ma On Shan, and to the far right is public housing development—different pricing, same view.

Also pictured in the middle are some crazy Hong Kong people using the fences to hang dry clothes in public. Seriously WTF. So you see what I posted earlier in my stream is not a singular example!

What continues to amaze me about Chinese landscape is that they really look like Chinese paintings. I used to think that the Chinese paintings look the way they do because it‘s a stylistic interpretation. It turns out that I was wrong—they really do look like that.

Most of my friends who work in finance work in this building or the IFC next door—whereas I usually come here to dine in many of the restaurants downstairs.

The Exchange Square (Chinese: 交易廣場) is a building complex located in Central, Hong Kong. It houses offices and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange [1].

It is also one of my favorite architectures in Hong Kong—featuring a beautiful striped facade accented by curves and lines.

Unlike IFC (also pictured: the skyscraper going upwards to the clouds to the left) which besides being super tall but otherwise have rather dull character, this cluster of buildings designed by Palmer & Turner and completed in 1985 (Phase 1 + 2) 1988 (Phase 3) is a feast to look at. Like many of the architectures in Central, its entrance is located not on the ground floor but the pedestrian footbridge level.

On the fourth floor is 翠玉軒 The Square, one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong. I was told that the view up there is spectacular also—but I am not a banker so I won’t know for sure. But one of these days I will try to make it up there to see what the fuss is all about. Stay tuned…

Situated adjacent to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Water Sports Centre (Chinese: 香港中文大學水上運動中心), there is a ferry pier which provides regular ferry service to remote areas including Tap Mun and Ping Chau in the northeast New Territories [1, 2].

Pictured is a 15-second long exposure of the pier at night shot across the harbour from Ma On Shan. As with most super telephoto photos, I was quite surprised to see the details. For example, there is no way for me to see that someone is on the pier from so far away, and yet there he is, sitting by the pier. He appears to be fishing while a woman look on on the side.

Photographed with the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L + 1.4x Extender, which effectively created a 560mm f/8L lens. With the exception of the Canon EOS 1D lineup, none of the other cameras can auto-focus at this size so it is manual focus. This also means that it is probably not going to be possible for me to use this combo for sports photography.

Someone on Flickr commented that an earlier shot of the plane + Aqua Luna Junk would look far better if I crop out the wing bits [1]. But of course they have no way in knowing that I in fact already have a shot which is even better.

For each capture that I make, I make a quick decision at the moment of capture on what it is that I wish to say. For the previous shot, it was about the wings of the plane vs the wing form of the HKCEC, so the contrast of forms is there.

For this shot, it is about the contrast of forms: the straight red sails of the boat vs the curves of the planes accented with reds.

To achieve maximum resolution which I seek, I try to assert an editorial eye at the moment of capture at different zoom length rather to resort to cropping after the fact.

丁乙 Ding Yi, born 丁荣 in 1962 in Shanghai, is an artist in China most well known for his “Appearance of Crosses” 十示 abstract paintings.

Together with his contemporaries 徐红明 Xu Hongming (b. 1971), 李华生 Li Huasheng (b. 1944) and 余友涵 Yu Youhan (b.1943), these abstract works from China [1] is known as “中國極多主義 (中国极多主义) Chinese Maximalism”, a term coined by 高名潞 GAO Minglu where the intention for abstraction in China differs that from the west [2].

Aside from painting, Ding Yi is also the first Chinese artist to collaborate with French luxury fashion label Hermès and has his own line of silk scarves in the “Hermès Editeur” collection [3].

Rainbow Teddy (RT) went to Toysrus today to look for Bert + Ernie but he could not find them. Instead, he found Stitch, which SML originally discovered on @Ortelpa’s Instagram feed [1]. The weird thing is, it is in blue, and SML thought that Stitch is in pink.

Stitch: We come in all different sizes and colors. What you saw on Ortelpa’s Instagram is my cousin.

SML: Oh I see.

Stitch: But let me talk to you later, for now I want to play with RT’s toy.

SML: But it was my…

RT: This EOS M is mine—just because I let you borrow my tiny camera does not mean that it is yours, SML. (to Stitch) so where were we, right? You see? This cam is made for our fluffy hands. It is sweet, is it now?

Stitch: Totally! Totally! I am so glad that you found me at Toysrus today. I was bored to tears in there. There is nothing to play with over there—except creepy people hugging and throwing me back to the shelf. Life is awesome here with you, RT.

RT: I am so glad that I found you also—my new BFF: Best Friend Forever!

Seriously. I don’t really understand why people in Hong Kong do that. In case you have no idea wtf is going on here, socks are attached to the clothes hanger and being hung dry on the street. And we are not talking about hidden alleys shielded from the street. This is hung right at the entrance to the Heng On MTR station. And they don’t come in numbers. Just two pairs. In the middle of no where.

Crazy good or not? You decide.

A sailor in “crackerjack” white uniform salutes to crew members boarding the ship while another enlisted sailor chats with another sailor named Callen in “Navy Working Uniform”—a camouflage which is digitally printed in multiple colors. According to Wikipedia, this should be the Navy Type III MARPAT [1].

The Crackerjacks—so nicknamed because of the Navy-uniformed figure that adorns the Cracker Jack snack box—are my all-time favorite uniforms worn by military units. Most probably because they feature bell-bottom cuts—a cut of pants which is closed to impossible for me to buy anywhere and I used to custom tailor them for myself—as many of my friends in New York knows.

It is for this same reason why I love the clothes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier [2], a fashion designer based in France who has had a long history of designing outfits which bears many naval uniform influences.

What is often rather unclear when photographing in near total darkness is the white point to develop in.

But since most image sensors are configured with 2G 1R and 1B, yellow (R+G) and green (G+G) are pretty good to work with. Here processed using green as layer. It could work just as well in black and white but I prefer the intensity of the warmth from the yellow glow so I pick it slightly towards lime.

Image sensors’ typical config: (where BG/GR together makes one single pixel)

BG BG BG

GR GR GR

This is why blue and reds are normally noisy but the greens in hardware is actually twice as much resolution. At least this is how I see it.

Two runners run side by side at the “You Can Shine 馬拉松新丁育成訓練計劃,” a weekly meetup intended for new comers to get familiarise with marathon runs (aka 長跑 long run in Chinese). It takes place every Thursday at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground at 7pm [1]. A lot of these runners wear shirts with 香港長跑網 longrun.hk logos, a community online for people who enjoy marathons [2].

Taken with the 6D + 100-400 at 12800 ISO — my new walk around setup at night. Processed as BW because grains are more forgiving then color noise for some reasons…

This is a time lapse with 1-minute intervals which spans a 24-hour period of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學 CUHK) from the vantage point of SML Universe HKG. A total of 1427 frames full res RAW files were captured to make this 1 minute long video. You can see that objects on water really do move quite a bit, and there are always some bizarre patterns on the water surface. It really is quite incredible.

I photographed this using fullres RAW because I intended to get enough footage for a 4K cinema release years from now. But HDD storage space is starting to become an issue, so I might shoot in fullres JPEG in the future because exporting all these RAW files for JPEG stills was somewhat time consuing as well.

The interior of the education facilities at the entrance of the park.

Situated around the parks are multitudes of these bird observation decks, which are essentially wooden huts fitted with telescopes and openings for photographers to fit their lenses and cameras. Spotted in the packs are 1Ds and 400mm f/2.8’s. These people mean serious business here.

The night was calm and quiet, until I heard music which sounded like ice cream trucks coming and going everywhere. At first I thought that it was weird — why would they come at this hour? Apparently, those were garbage trucks! In Taiwan, they are equipped with speakers that play music to alert citizens to take out their trash. It was truly bizarre.

I had no tripod with me so I shot this two-image “pano” handheld at ISO 8000.

Sadamasa Motonaga (元永定正; Motonaga Sadamasa) is an artist Japanese born in 1922 in Mie Prefecture (三重県 Mie-ken). He is a founding member of the avant-garde movement 具体 Gutai.

The Gutai group (具体; means "Embodiment") is the first radical, post-war group in Japan. It was founded in Osaka, Japan, 1954, in response to the reactionary artistic context of the time.

More aerial goodness from way high up using a telephoto lens, mostly thanks to the awesome combination of the 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x Extender. If I buy the 70-200 f/2.8L then I will consider getting the 2x Extender but the 70-200 f/2.8L is a bit pricey for me right now—not to mention how heavy it is to go anywhere. If it is too heavy for me than it is unlikely that I would use it so although it is a nice to have, it is certainly not on my to buy list.

I enjoy works which have multiple levels of reading — the macro view vs the micro views. For these kinds of captures, however, I have wished that I would have the tools which have a high enough resolution (detail) for both views to register.

From afar (or if you view the photo as a thumbnail), you should see some very abstract lines. There are horizontal lines running from top to bottom, large strokes which are left behind by ships. From left to right, there are curves which is a reflection of the water current, ever so slightly.

But as you look closer, you would see that there are some tiny lines which go across the the frame. There is a tiny figure on the lower left, which is in fact a person windsurfing on the surface. There is in fact another person windsurfing at the far end of the sea also.

At the macro level, you will see the reflected sun as molten silver, which is another level of reading.

The figures in this photographs are participants of an otherwise abstract image. If the windsurfers are the focus, I would have photographed him directly with a long lens, which you can in an earlier capture shot at 400mm [1].

Life action shots cannot really be tiled easily, so as much as I would have loved to shoot the whole image with a 400mm, it could not possibly register as a single continuous image. Maybe if I have an array of 400mm + cameras? Or maybe a large format can do. 20 years later when I have that budget, perhaps. For now, just this bit.

The boys (and some girls) are out for dragon boat practice this afternoon. These athletes appear to be in significantly better shape then the other university teams I have been spotting, so I looked them up.

Turns out that 貴良龍 is the the part of the official dragon boat team of the Hong Kong Police Force, and its team members come from all ranks and departments, though most of them are part of the Hong Kong Marine Region.

The name 貴良龍, as with the rest of the six dragon boats which make up of the team, is named after retired police commissioners.

Also of note which is dissimilar to the other teams I have seen so far is the fact that they wear gloves to sail, as I gathered they must thrust quite vigorously.

I can’t wait til the festival starts this year, which should be fairly soon in June. I was told that I should be able to see the contest outside my window. Stay tuned.

Sometimes people asked me when I decide to process photographs in color vs black-and-white. It is easy. When things do not work as well in color, I develop them as black and white. Push as you will, but some photographs just won’t work as well in color.

This is one such example, the black and white version to follow. But here you see it is very foggy. You might say that it has a very blue cast—but it is not the cast. The natural laws of physics and the way air absorbs colors dictates that things in the far would appear bluish. The color information here is almost a distraction. But I am posting this here so you can compare after the fact.

Like I said, I am a nice guy. This is stitched together using seven 7D RAW captures mounted on a tripod at my living room window—a dangerous act with the camera exposed in the air, yes, but well worth it I think.

When you are driving, it is hard to see the speed limits. But traffic signs in Hong Kong are often placed on the ground. They are vertically scaled to match the eyesight of the driver.

These speed limits signage are seen on 西沙路 Sai Sha Road in 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan, a road in Hong Kong, which links together from Sai Kung District to Sha Tin District in the New Territories.

Do artists adapt their language to suit the audience that they intended? Some apparently do. This is a large scale installation by Jaume Plensa, an Catalan Spanish artist and sculptor. Using stainless steel to string along latin alphabets to form human forms is a motif dominant in his sculpture works [1], but this might be the first instance of them in Asian characters.

Unlike latin characters which can form all kinds of different meanings just by the jumbling of a limited character set, seen here are a collages of selected scripts. Perhaps most bizarre though is that it features characters from both the Japanese Kanji to Japanese Kana, some simplified Chinese characters. I cannot read Japanese so I do not know if they say anything specific, But there are some recognisable characters, such as 時 (time), 建 (architecture), 男 (Men), 界 (world, division), 案 (document, project), 力 (strength).

Only the artist himself would know what all these mean to him, but being able to relate more succinctly to the works (which often feel alien to me because they reference cultures in another world) is very welcoming indeed.

# Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa (Spanish, b.1955) is one of the world's foremost sculptors working in the public space, with over 30 projects spanning the globe in such cities as Chicago, Dubai, London, Liverpool, Nice, Tokyo, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Over the past 25 years, the artist has produced a rich body of work in the studio and the public realm. By combining conventional sculptural materials (glass, steel, bronze, aluminum) with more unconventional media (water, light, sound, video), and frequently incorporating text, Plensa creates hybrid works of intricate energy and psychology. From his delicately textured, intimate works on paper—like his 2005-06 series of ethnographic portraits that resemble worn, 19th century photographs—to monumental outdoor sculptures like Nomade (2007) and a range of cityscape-altering public projects like the Crown Fountain in Chicago (2000-05), Plensa's work takes many forms.

Plensa's work is invested in evoking emotion and stimulating intellectual engagement. By posing conceptual dualities in his work (inside/outside, front/back, light/dark), Plensa seeks to connect with his viewers on an intuitive level. Often, the viewer participation, or the object/viewer relationship, is what completes Plensa's work.

The winner of many national and international awards, Jaume Plensa has had solo exhibitions at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, UK; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Spain; the Musée Picasso, Antibes, France; the Arts Club of Chicago; Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and Galerie National du Jeu de Paume, Paris among many others. He lives and works in Barcelona

I dread it when people ask me what I photograph, because I don’t really photograph anything particular that is deemed interesting to normal humans.

This is Hong Chong Road (康莊道), a road next to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel (海底隧道) in Hung Hom (紅磡). Far in the background is Hotel ICON (唯港薈), which is the teaching and research hotel built for The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM 酒店及旅遊業管理學院) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) [1].

I photograph this because I like how the lines lead the eye through the frame. This is for my 中文字形 Chinese Typographic Forms series, where I find Chinese characters in a frame after noting that the concept of 形 Forms is not readily appreciated by the Chinese audience but they can relate to Chinese characters.

I am usually not a big fan of these typographic lightbulb installations. However, the installation seen here at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia works well with its environment, and establishes a bit of interaction with the bystanders.

“You imagine what you desire” is the title of the 19th Biennale of Sydney which was on view from March 21st til June 9th. I had a brief visit when they were still putting the show up and the works were quite good. I even saw some of these pieces shown there at Art Basel Hong Kong 2014 (to be posted).

Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L at Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), 140 George St, The Rocks NSW 2000, Australia.

Chinese guardian lions, traditionally known in Chinese simply as Shi (獅, literally “lion”), are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. Statues of guardian lions have traditionally stood in front of important Chinese architectures, and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits.

The lions are usually depicted in pairs. When used as statuory, the pair would consist of a male resting his paw upon an embroidered ball (in imperial contexts, representing supremacy over the world) and a female restraining a playful cub that is on its back (representing nurture).

Pictured is one of the bronze guardian lions outside the Gate of Supreme Harmony (太和門), the second major gate encountered when entering the Forbidden City from the south.

Photographed at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM.
