Clockwise from top left: Strattera, Viagra, Panadol, Nicorette. Yes these are all prescriptions.

Why do I get Viagra? Well one of the reasons I don't like to take Strattera aka the “chill pill for when interfacing with humans” is that although it halves my speed and thus make it possible for me to talk to humans in their “normal speed,” it has very severe sexual side effects. It is very challenging.

People who take psychiatric meds would understand this. Many anti-depressants have this side effect mainly because of their specific mechanism of actions (MOA). So it is rather wtf sometimes. You take meds to help you adjust your mood so you don't get depressed but then you would then completely suck in bed.

Not too good ey? But get this—the blue pill pretty much turns you into a sex god and seriously ever since I get these prescriptions there are more than enough men in New York lining up to “play” with me. Oh the crazy insane world of fun when you are certifiably crazy—like I said, Crazyisgood! :)

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”—Hofmann

Hans Hofmann (March 21, 1880 – February 17, 1966) was a German-born American abstract expressionist painter. He believed that abstract art was a way to get at the important reality.

Starting at a young age, Hofmann gravitated towards science and mathematics. At age sixteen, he started work with the Bavarian government as assistant to the director of Public Works where he was able to increase his knowledge of mathematics. He went on to develop and patent such devices as the electromagnetic comptometer, a radar device for ships at sea, a sensitized light bulb, and a portable freezer unit for military use. Even with such great abilities in science and mathematics, Hofmann became interested in creative studies, beginning educational art training after the death of his father.

Hofmann’s art work is distinguished by a rigorous concern with pictorial structure, spatial illusion, and color relationships.

The Kowloon skyline from the vantage point on the 6th floor of Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai, where I had dinner last night.

The tallest building to the left is International Commerce Centre (ICC) in West Kowloon, a superskyscraper in Hong Kong which is also the world’s 5th tallest. In the center is the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, together with the original Peninsula Hotel, with the Intercontinental Hotel (the original Regent) on the right. On the far right, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai on the Hong Kong Island side.

Stitched together using 16 RAW capture. Also handheld, but as you can see, handheld pano is doable when objects are far away.

Some captures have such a strange color cast that I often process them in black and white. But then if I wish to keep the color—as in the sunset in this scene—then I do it inside Photoshop’s Lab mode.

Unlike RGB process, Lab separates color information with the lightness curve, thus allowing you to tweak the curve to taste without affecting the colors. Then you can use the color curves: a for magenta/green and b for yellow/blue to independently tweak things to what you wish for. Lightroom also has some independent color controls but I could never get it to be exactly the way I like it as in Photoshop.

The National Concert Hall (國家音樂廳) is a performing arts venue at Liberty Square in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan. The buildings, though modern in function and purpose, recall traditional elements of Chinese palace architecture. The building and its twin, the National Theater (國家戲劇院) located directly across, were completed in 1987.

Dingling (定陵 Dìng Lìng; literally: "Tomb of Stability"), one of the tombs at the Thirteen Tombs of the Ming Dynasty site, is the tomb of the Wanli Emperor (萬曆). It is the only Ming tomb to have been excavated. It also remains the only intact imperial tomb, of any era, to have been excavated since the founding of the People's Republic of China, a situation that is almost a direct result of the fate that befell Dingling and its contents after the excavation.

Pictured is one of the tunnels inside the tomb. It is very eerie. It reminded me somewhat of the Eastern State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania which I visited a long while back.

These Chinese imperial roof decorations were seen at the 慈誠宮 Cíchéng Gōng (lit: “Temple of Compassion and Sincerity”). Although the temple was built in 1796, the color of the figures remain vibrant and theirs details demonstrate expert craftsmanship.

Two competing guilds of woodcarvers were invited to work at the temple, which might reason why the wood carves look particularly daring and intricate. It is considered a “Level-3 Historic Site” (三級古蹟) in Taiwan.

Technically speaking, this does not really need to be a panorama stitch. But I am obsessed with details, and if I use a wide angle lens to photograph this then the resulting resolution will not be as high as I want it to be. Also, what I pictured in my head is the sheer width of the ship.

And so I made my decision to photograph 10 full-resolution RAW captures at 400mm to be stitched together after the fact. At this resolution, you can clearly make out each bolt on the aircraft as well as the rain drops on the net—details which would likely be lost if a single wide angle capture was made.

In Beijing, hutongs (胡同) are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan (四合院), traditional courtyard residences. Neighborhoods were formed by the interconnection of these alleys, and the word hutong can also sometimes be used to refer to such neighborhoods.

The alleys are long and narrow, so while you can walk around on foot, the best way to see the hutongs is to go with one of these rickshaw rides (pictured), which functions similar to a hop-on / hop-off transport around the neighbourhoods.

I did not begin to appreciate the magic of cloudscapes until I started working with time-lapse photography. The clouds during sunset in Hong Kong’s typhoon season is most incredible, and combined with sunset the color fidelity is second to none.

The time-lapse which I have shot in the past were output directly from camera without much processing, mainly as I did not see it possible to process each RAW capture by hand to create a video. However, a friend on Instagram recommended that I checked out LRTimelapse, which allows me to set a few shots in the RAW captures as keyframes and then batch it over the entire sequence.

With this new tool in hand, I am able to process each capture to my standards and then sequenced it together inside Premiere Pro.

The title of this sequence is by my auntie Rita Lee in Hong Kong. The soundtrack is found on SoundCloud on tracks licensed via Creative Commons. This video could not have been made without all the fantastic creative resources available. Once again, CC rocks!

Every weekend, crew teams from different universities practice at Tolo Harbour. Pictured is the team from The University of Hong Kong (HKU 香港大學), noted by its abbreviation 港大 seen on the tank top of of of its crew members. According to their Facebook page [1], the club has been around since 1981.

I am particularly drawn to the delicate lines of the boats as well as the patterns each cox makes on the water surface.

I have attempted multiple times to capture them on video but it is fairly hard with my current setup. The 7D combined with the 100-400mm gives a combined equivalent focal length of 640mm on the zoomed-out side. This means any minute movement will result in camera shake.

At the moment I do not have any geared head and anyone with a ball head knows that getting precise positioning in a quick action shot is not really doable. I guess I will just have to get closer to the surface — but by the time I reach the ground floor they are usually gone. Tricky business.

This is a 360-degree panorama of the bus terminal located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier in Hong Kong. Located at the south-most corner of Kowloon, it is the ideal location for bus companies to plan their last stop shuttling to other parts of Hong Kong.

The KMB (Kowloon Motor Bus) company started many of its first bus routes from this terminus, as noted by the bus numbers on the station, which ranges only in single digits — as opposed to the double- or triple-digit route numbers seen in most parts of Hong Kong.

Directly adjacent to the station (center in this photo) is the Star Ferry pier, which provides passenger ferry service to Hong Kong Island.

In this panorama, I have heightened the shadow area to expose the rust and dust of the awning covering the station. I am attracted to its geometric architectural forms and years of decay. You probably would not notice them when you walk by as they are well within the shadow areas, but as a lover for deadly objectives, it was a wonderful find for me.

Stitched together with 12 captures with the 6D + 17-40 mounted on the Manfrotto 303SPH pano head.

When I first posted a time-lapse video about a sunset cloudscape [1], a few people commented that they really liked the sequence about the sunset, but they wish that it was longer. Recently, I read about doing long exposure via stack sequences, so I tried to see if I can utilise this new knowledge to render a long-exposure shot this way since I have already a long series of captures done.

For this photo, I have used 36 captures spaced at 10-sec each to create the final image. The time spacing is probably a bit too wide to render the smoothest clouds, because it was originally intended as a time-lapse sequence and not an LE stack. I used Photoshop’s Stack Median functionality to blend the transition, then I lowered the clarity in Lightroom to smooth out some uneven edges on the clouds and water. And voila. It works pretty well, so I will definitely work on more in the future.

I had always assumed that the best lens to do macro with a creamy bokeh like this is to use a wide angle lens. I was wrong. The best lens to use appear to be a super telephoto.

There’s a lot of running in soccer. I don’t really play sports—not that I don’t want to but maybe no one would play with me because I am not very “athletic” so to speak.

What I liked was the pair of running between two teams in the foreground together with the pair of two teams in the background.

In more academic settings, I have a particular fondness for geometric constructive forms, so many of these works speak to me — even though they are abstract in nature.

Heinz Mack (born March 8, 1931) is a German artist. Together with Otto Piene he founded the ZERO movement in 1957. He exhibited works at documenta in 1964 and 1977 and he represented Germany at the 1970 Venice Biennale. He is best known for his contributions to op art, light art and kinetic art.

# Heinz Mack

Heinz Mack was born in 1931 in a small German village. Between 1950 and 1956 he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1967 together with Otto Piene he started a series of what were called Abendausstellungen (evening exhibitions) at their studio in Düsseldorf. This series was the initial event for the formation of the group ZERO (with Mack, Piene and Günther Uecker as its nucleus) and the international ZERO movement. Among the participants of the ZERO movement were Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and Jean Tinguely.

In 1964 Mack, Piene and Uecker arranged the “ZERO Lichtraum (Hommage á Lucio Fontana)” at the 1964 documenta in Kassel. From 1964 to 1966 Mack lived and worked in New York where the Howard Wise Gallery presented a solo exhibition in 1966.

1970 Mack was invited as visiting professor to Osaka, Japan. In the same year he represented Germany at the 1970 Venice Biennale (together with Günther Uecker, Georg Karl Pfahler and Thomas Lenk).

For the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich he created an illuminated “Wasserwolke” (Water cloud).

In 1972 he was asked to create a 230 ft tall sculpture for the United Nations headquarters in New York (not realized).

Mack is represented by ARNDT Berlin.

There is this odd-shaped building with very wonderful forms at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade (西九龍海濱長廊), a park near the West Kowloon Cultural District (西九文化區 WKCD) which was built completely on reclaimed lands [1, 2].

With its very sculpted forms and striking yellow paint, it looks almost like Bumblebee from the Transformer series [3]. I have always wonder what it was when I photograph West Kowloon from Tsim Sha Tsui.

It looks like a sculpture, but I was told that it was likely a ventilation structure for the Western Harbour Crossing (WHC 西隧), the third tunnel to cross Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong [4, 5]. Based on its architectural style, it might very well be the property of MTR, Hong Kong’s metro system, whose Airport Express passes this junction from the Kowloon station to Hong Kong station.

MTR buildings tend to have very recognisable forms like this, and is the reason why I picked that. But if I find someone in the know I will definitely ask. Unfortunately, even on Google Maps this building is unmarked.

The Hung Hom Station (紅磡站), formerly known as Kowloon Station (九龍車站), is an MTR station on the East Rail Line and West Rail Line in Hong Kong. It is located next to the Cross Harbour Tunnel in Yau Tsim Mong District, Kowloon. It is one of the three Hong Kong ports-of-entry on the MTR network which connect directly to mainland China.

This 360-degree panorama was shot handheld with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L. It is handheld, so parallax error is unavoidable. I do not generally do location scouting for my photography, but with a proof-of-concept capture in hand I will definitely go back with my tripod — when I get my pano head. Any day now—seems it is a must buy item in my arsenal now that I started doing so many panoramic shots.

We walked by a shopping mall that looked abandoned, but the construction has not started yet. I like the irony of the mess inside contrasted with the Chinese writing on the front, which translates to: “Happy Families Shopping Mall Welcomes You”. I was in a hurry so I did not explore further.

“This collection is inspired by global riot initiated by teenagers, local political and social issues. Traces of it can be seen from the pattern on fabrics, details on accessories to the vibe of the final outfits as a whole. This collection is also one of the so many ways to celebrate the waking up of youngsters from ignorance, self-egos and work their ways out against the corrupted social value, ideology and bureaucracy, of which their actions are always regarded as a form of social disturbance. on top of that, it allows me to express my own personal perspective.”—Rhyox Wan, designer

Rhyox Wan (WAN Wai-Kit): …and we live off of the unsettling soul: Look 5 / PolyU Fashion Show 2013 / SML.20130626.6D.16847

I went to PolyU to see a drama performance last week, and just like my sources at the university has mentioned, the bamboo scaffolding on the Innovation Tower is completely gone, and now you can see the organic forms of this magnificent architecture soaring to the sky.

As I last wrote [1], Zaha Hadid is one of my all-time favorite architects, and this will be her first permanent fixture in Hong Kong. Truly it is incredible.

I was just passing by, and it was super late at night, but here you see why usable high ISO matters. This was shot with the 6D + 17-40. It was shot handheld with 3 exposures. Without a tripod it is not really technically ideal to try at HDR but thanks to the modern marvels of technology, the features are aligned nicely.

Trust that I will go back during the daytime when I have a chance.

I am obsessed with this plant, but I have no idea what it is called. I think that it might be the same plant that people used to use in ancient times for human-powered fanning. Trust that I will go and investigate.

It is a bit hard to figure out what things are called with just a visual image. Yes I did try Google Goggles but Goggles is not really good at finding images unless there is a visual exact match.

This is essentially what Flickr is training its engines to do: associating words with images so people can search better. Yes, really. And if they are not really doing that then trust that this is what I will do if I own an image search engine.

Yes, it is planned but probably not going to be for public consumption til 10 years from now so it is useless for you to know about what is going on at the moment.

The semi-reflective marble facade of this financial architecture in Hong Kong reminds me of the forms and color palette often used by George Braque, a French painter and sculptor who, along with Pablo Picasso, developed the art style known as Cubism.

Teenagers playing a game of football (soccer) on the hard-surface football pitch adjacent to a primary school located inside a public housing estate in Hong Kong.

As I mentioned previously, “standard” architecture in Hong Kong follow recognizable design patterns. Locals will be able to tell that the blue building the background is a school immediately based on how it looks [1].

Sport and recreation facilities are usually surrounded green fence. They do usually cause quite a bit of problem for my photography, but luckily there is a pedestrian footbridge right next to the soccer pitch—thus you see they are not only good for traffic but photography as well.

This is the same place where I took a photo for my abstract photography with the G12 last year [2].

This is a handheld panorama stitched together using 9 full resolution 7D RAW captures. Shot handheld. The keen viewer will note that the cars are completely chopped off and hanging in midair although their imperfection is shielded by the fences—so in some ways they might be good for some things? :)

I have always wanted to do large format photography, but the cost for the cameras are somewhat prohibitive for me. But I believe that if I have the will, I can do it. So I have been hacking this by stitching 7D captures together for a view which is beyond which a wide angle lens can capture.

This one shows the view from SML Universe HKG, and is the subject for my 寧 Serenity photography series. While the single frame captures can also cover so much, by panning the camera in portrait mode set to 17mm focal length, I am able to cover a large area of the sky as well as the sea.

The sea tiling is imperfect, because it moves. This done handheld, so the seams might not be perfect. Also my window does not open as wide as it could, so I actually had to use two different windows to get this. I wish that I can get roof access but unfortunately not. I would consider going to up to the mountain next to me to see if I can get a better view in the future.

Today, when I went out to the Ma On Shan Promenade to do panoramic photography, I ran into some people wake boarding at Tolo Harbour. I promised @Ortelpa that I would do some “correct focusing” on subjects which he is “mostly interested in” so here ya go!

Escaping the 2D plane appears to be a trending theme in recent works. It is starting to be a challenge to categorise works because they these contemporary works are neither sculpture nor painting nor installation — which might explain why almost everything is “mixed media” these days.

Japanese artist 川俣正 Tadashi Kawamata (b. 1953) is well known for his large scale installation works which combines architecture and urban planning with other social science fields.

This architectural plan constructed with plywood and balsa and accented with acrylic in pencil is both sculptural and two-dimensional. It is three-dimension in its construction, but intended to be viewed as a 3D-projection on a 2D plane.

I never tried doing bokeh on the 70-200 but it seems that it is very good at it. In one test I managed to get 6 circles covering the entire capture—crazy. But when they are so large I also saw that the dusts are everywhere so I will go clean my lens and try again later.

# SML Translate

+ 朦朦朧朧隱隱約約 (Simplified Chinese: 朦朦胧胧隐隐约约) is probably best translated as “Blurry Hazy Foggy Vague”. When you double-up Chinese characters it implies more of that. So it is blurrier than blurry and hazier than haze. Somewhat bizarre. Hard to translate. Chinese is challenging because unlike other languages which have specific grammar and structure, you can really lump Chinese characters up in anyway you like—Yes, seriously WTF awesome.

How do you capture the wind which is invisible? By long exposure, naturally.

This is an aerial view of the Ma On Shan Promenade. You should recognise it by now by the oh-so-lovely blue jogging trail. Everything is at a stand still, but by using the ND filter and expose for eight full seconds under bright day light, all of a sudden you noticed the invisible wind because the trees wiggle to a blur, and in turn reveal the very defined architectural patterns on the floor.

A baby stroller walked by on the pavement within this capture, but you do not see it, because it has only registered very few pixels.

ND is useful in more ways then I imagined. Sweet.

Using his full body as thrust, a man covered in wet suit rows a long thin boat at Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong.

Gorgeous forms -<- — also love the bright colors. I wish that I can wear that on the street and not get weird looks. This looks like fun. I might go and exercise a bit.

As usual, these were taken right outside my window. Crazy things do happen all the time. You just have to be swift at it so the rapid-fire action of the 7D is key here. I have enough stills from photographing him to make a stop-motion movie, which I shall post in the future.

The Rotunda annex of the National Library of Finland, completed in 1906, is a six-story structure with bookshelves placed around an open central space. Gazing up or down in the Rotunda offers stunning views of the library’s interior architecture

The National Library of Finland (Kansalliskirjasto) serves as the foremost research library in the country and is a vital institution for preserving Finnish cultural heritage. Located in Helsinki, near the iconic Senaatintori square, it is both a repository of knowledge and a cultural hub.

I visited this place in August during my week in Helsinki, per recommendation by Alexander. I only had a 24-105 with me during the visit and was unable to capture its beauty in a single shot, so I have stitched together 14 captures to make a vertical pano.

Imi Knoebel (born Klaus Wolf Knoebel; 1940) is a German artist known for his minimalist abstract paintings and sculptures. His work explores the relationship between space, picture support and color, and his works often draw comparisons with modern principles of both Kazimir Malevich and the Bauhaus.

The "Messerschnitt" or "knife cuts," are a recurring technique he employs, along with his regular use of the primary colors, red, yellow and blue.

Knoebel lives and works in Düsseldorf.

30-second long exposure with an ND filter.

Personally I would have preferred the 4-inch filters so I can drop in after I have set the focus, but I can’t seem to find them in Hong Kong. But I found this variable filter recently: the H&Y ND2-ND400 specifically. It is a screw in, and when set to minimum ND2 I can still see the scene fairly clearly as well as able to focus using the AF on the camera. After I have the parameters set, I dialled it to ND400 and expose everything manually.

I think that I should be able to push a little longer next time. What I observed is that because of the wind, the plants appear to move quite a bit and thus rendering a blur. So next time I would try to do a 2-minute if I am able to.

Like I said, almost all Chinese people in Hong Kong are 1337 hackers. They might not call themselves that way, but they most definitely know how to repurpose things in the way they see fit — aka hackers.

Under the bright stadium lights, people in the Hong Kong exercise after a day of work: a football match in the middle, runners run around the tracks, and a team of folks practicing tai chi in the foreground.

Here you also see the densely populated neighbourhood surrounding the stadium, as well as where I photographed the big lock on the right hand side seen earlier in my stream.

The 南天門 (南天门 “Southern Gate to Heavey” Nán tiānmén) is located at the end of 十八盤 (十八盘 Shíbā pán). It was formerly known as 三天門 (三天门 “Three day gate” Sān tiānmén) and 天門關 (天门关 “Gate to Heaven” tiānmén guān).

Located 1460 meters above sea level, the mountain is the most dangerous cliff between 飛龍巖 (飞龙岩 “Flying dragon bounder” Fēi lóngyán) and 翔鳳嶺 (翔凤岭 ”Ridge of phoenix in flight” Xiáng fèng lǐng). It was named so because it looks as if the gate of heaven was opened at the location.

It was built by a monk from 布山 (“Cloth mountain” Bù shān) in 元中統五年 Yuan Dynasty (1264). The gate was built as 閣樓式建築 (“loft style architecture”) with stones formed as an arch.

The imposing form was accented by dots on the red wall and the yellow-glazed roof top. The couplet at the side of the door reads:

Getty licenses some of my photos on Flickr. And what have traditionally always gotten me into trouble is property releases. So now I have wised up—I just don’t include any identifiable objects in the photo—no property releases necessary.

Pictured is the gorgeous humanist forms of a Porsche found at the car park downstairs. Like I said, there are a ton of them here.

Mercedes-Benz’s and BMW’s are such a commonplace in Hong Kong that I can usually tell whether I am in Hong Kong or not just by looking at the traffic. If there are no Benz’s running within a minute I most certainly am not in Hong Kong.
