We walked by a shopping mall that looked abandoned, but the construction has not started yet. I like the irony of the mess inside contrasted with the Chinese writing on the front, which translates to: “Happy Families Shopping Mall Welcomes You”. I was in a hurry so I did not explore further.
Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM in Sanya, Hainan, China.

Escaping the 2D plane appears to be a trending theme in recent works. It is starting to be a challenge to categorise works because they these contemporary works are neither sculpture nor painting nor installation — which might explain why almost everything is “mixed media” these days.
Japanese artist 川俣正 Tadashi Kawamata (b. 1953) is well known for his large scale installation works which combines architecture and urban planning with other social science fields.
This architectural plan constructed with plywood and balsa and accented with acrylic in pencil is both sculptural and two-dimensional. It is three-dimension in its construction, but intended to be viewed as a 3D-projection on a 2D plane.

Using his full body as thrust, a man covered in wet suit rows a long thin boat at Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong.
Gorgeous forms -<- — also love the bright colors. I wish that I can wear that on the street and not get weird looks. This looks like fun. I might go and exercise a bit.
As usual, these were taken right outside my window. Crazy things do happen all the time. You just have to be swift at it so the rapid-fire action of the 7D is key here. I have enough stills from photographing him to make a stop-motion movie, which I shall post in the future.

Teenagers playing a game of football (soccer) on the hard-surface football pitch adjacent to a primary school located inside a public housing estate in Hong Kong.
As I mentioned previously, “standard” architecture in Hong Kong follow recognizable design patterns. Locals will be able to tell that the blue building the background is a school immediately based on how it looks [1].
Sport and recreation facilities are usually surrounded green fence. They do usually cause quite a bit of problem for my photography, but luckily there is a pedestrian footbridge right next to the soccer pitch—thus you see they are not only good for traffic but photography as well.
This is the same place where I took a photo for my abstract photography with the G12 last year [2].
This is a handheld panorama stitched together using 9 full resolution 7D RAW captures. Shot handheld. The keen viewer will note that the cars are completely chopped off and hanging in midair although their imperfection is shielded by the fences—so in some ways they might be good for some things? :)

Like I said, almost all Chinese people in Hong Kong are 1337 hackers. They might not call themselves that way, but they most definitely know how to repurpose things in the way they see fit — aka hackers.

I never tried doing bokeh on the 70-200 but it seems that it is very good at it. In one test I managed to get 6 circles covering the entire capture—crazy. But when they are so large I also saw that the dusts are everywhere so I will go clean my lens and try again later.
# SML Translate
+ 朦朦朧朧隱隱約約 (Simplified Chinese: 朦朦胧胧隐隐约约) is probably best translated as “Blurry Hazy Foggy Vague”. When you double-up Chinese characters it implies more of that. So it is blurrier than blurry and hazier than haze. Somewhat bizarre. Hard to translate. Chinese is challenging because unlike other languages which have specific grammar and structure, you can really lump Chinese characters up in anyway you like—Yes, seriously WTF awesome.

I have always wanted to do large format photography, but the cost for the cameras are somewhat prohibitive for me. But I believe that if I have the will, I can do it. So I have been hacking this by stitching 7D captures together for a view which is beyond which a wide angle lens can capture.
This one shows the view from SML Universe HKG, and is the subject for my 寧 Serenity photography series. While the single frame captures can also cover so much, by panning the camera in portrait mode set to 17mm focal length, I am able to cover a large area of the sky as well as the sea.
The sea tiling is imperfect, because it moves. This done handheld, so the seams might not be perfect. Also my window does not open as wide as it could, so I actually had to use two different windows to get this. I wish that I can get roof access but unfortunately not. I would consider going to up to the mountain next to me to see if I can get a better view in the future.

How do you capture the wind which is invisible? By long exposure, naturally.
This is an aerial view of the Ma On Shan Promenade. You should recognise it by now by the oh-so-lovely blue jogging trail. Everything is at a stand still, but by using the ND filter and expose for eight full seconds under bright day light, all of a sudden you noticed the invisible wind because the trees wiggle to a blur, and in turn reveal the very defined architectural patterns on the floor.
A baby stroller walked by on the pavement within this capture, but you do not see it, because it has only registered very few pixels.
ND is useful in more ways then I imagined. Sweet.

Imi Knoebel (born Klaus Wolf Knoebel; 1940) is a German artist known for his minimalist abstract paintings and sculptures. His work explores the relationship between space, picture support and color, and his works often draw comparisons with modern principles of both Kazimir Malevich and the Bauhaus.
The "Messerschnitt" or "knife cuts," are a recurring technique he employs, along with his regular use of the primary colors, red, yellow and blue.
Knoebel lives and works in Düsseldorf.

This is a pair of Vans with Brawl Stars characters. They’re a gift from Supercell, the developer of the 3v3 mobile game.
I don’t make content for Brawl Stars, but I have played it since Alpha. As a “Super Creator” — I make a website for Clash Royale called RoyaleAPI — I receive perks and swags from the company often.
These are the only Vans I have ever owned. They are super comfy. I know that Vans exists as a brand, but I have never bought them myself.
I received this pair as a gift towards the end of 2021, and have been wearing them everyday throughout 2022. So comfortable!
I shot this phto in 2022 because I wanted to share them on Twitter, but I never posted them anywhere — tbh, I have felt somewhat embarassed about what I do for a long time. Most people give me blank stares — the kids would light up knowing who I am, but most people my age would not know who Supercell is and I would often feel ridiculous having to explain / justify why I do what I do. I learned to care less.
These were shot inside Orangemonkie Foldio3 — it‘s a brilliant lightbox that I bought because I wanted to photograph the merchandise I received from Supercell. Often, I have to make designs for the giveaway items, and I prefer to shoot my own photographs for them, because the standard product shots from Supercell don’t always meet my design needs.

Todd Lehman – Artist Statement
Nineteenth-century English critic Walter Pater said that all art aspires to be music. More recently, in a ''New York Times'' interview, Spanish painter Antoni Tapies said, "One should compare modern art to music." Who can argue with that? Abstract painting then is about visual noise and energy-and about the beauty of silence-all of which are certainly related to music.
While I sometimes work on large canvases, I prefer the hard surface of paper and often collage newspaper or various handmade papers, including rice papers, into a painting. Tools? Brushes, of course, but also a variety of scraping and scratching tools.
What inspires my paintings? Two things-landscape and architecture. Well, maybe three things. The energy of New York City is inescapable. We New Yorkers are addicted to the visual noise and drive of the city, but for obvious reasons we relish moments of solitude and meditation. So my paintings are sometimes like a raucous traffic jam, other times like the quiet of a leaf falling in a Japanese garden. They are the pages of a visual autobiography.
The 南天門 (南天门 “Southern Gate to Heavey” Nán tiānmén) is located at the end of 十八盤 (十八盘 Shíbā pán). It was formerly known as 三天門 (三天门 “Three day gate” Sān tiānmén) and 天門關 (天门关 “Gate to Heaven” tiānmén guān).
Located 1460 meters above sea level, the mountain is the most dangerous cliff between 飛龍巖 (飞龙岩 “Flying dragon bounder” Fēi lóngyán) and 翔鳳嶺 (翔凤岭 ”Ridge of phoenix in flight” Xiáng fèng lǐng). It was named so because it looks as if the gate of heaven was opened at the location.
It was built by a monk from 布山 (“Cloth mountain” Bù shān) in 元中統五年 Yuan Dynasty (1264). The gate was built as 閣樓式建築 (“loft style architecture”) with stones formed as an arch.
The imposing form was accented by dots on the red wall and the yellow-glazed roof top. The couplet at the side of the door reads:

30-second long exposure with an ND filter.
Personally I would have preferred the 4-inch filters so I can drop in after I have set the focus, but I can’t seem to find them in Hong Kong. But I found this variable filter recently: the H&Y ND2-ND400 specifically. It is a screw in, and when set to minimum ND2 I can still see the scene fairly clearly as well as able to focus using the AF on the camera. After I have the parameters set, I dialled it to ND400 and expose everything manually.
I think that I should be able to push a little longer next time. What I observed is that because of the wind, the plants appear to move quite a bit and thus rendering a blur. So next time I would try to do a 2-minute if I am able to.

Under the bright stadium lights, people in the Hong Kong exercise after a day of work: a football match in the middle, runners run around the tracks, and a team of folks practicing tai chi in the foreground.
Here you also see the densely populated neighbourhood surrounding the stadium, as well as where I photographed the big lock on the right hand side seen earlier in my stream.

13th annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® (Sept 25 to Sept 27, 2009)
www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html
The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation's largest urban forum for experimental art.
Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists' studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.
The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

After some recent success photographing panorama with the 100-400, I tried to photograph the cloudscape with the super telephoto to see if I can get similar results. What I aim for, as always, is the resolution which a regular lens would not provide
Unlike landscape which I can easily determine whether or not I have made a shot, I find the abstract forms in the sky a bit harder to track. So I will likely get a pano head soon. For now I have somewhat decided that I would just go with the Manfrotto 303SPH instead of the robotic heads.
Photographed with the 6D + 100-400. 20 image stitch inside Autopano Giga 3, processed in Photoshop CS6.

Getty licenses some of my photos on Flickr. And what have traditionally always gotten me into trouble is property releases. So now I have wised up—I just don’t include any identifiable objects in the photo—no property releases necessary.
Pictured is the gorgeous humanist forms of a Porsche found at the car park downstairs. Like I said, there are a ton of them here.
Mercedes-Benz’s and BMW’s are such a commonplace in Hong Kong that I can usually tell whether I am in Hong Kong or not just by looking at the traffic. If there are no Benz’s running within a minute I most certainly am not in Hong Kong.

Thank You for Your Visit, Have a Nice Day is a performance piece by Agata Olek (Facebook / Flickr / Portfolio) created for Art in Odd Places:SIGN, an annual festival exploring the odd, ordinary and ingenious in the spectacle of daily life.
Curated by Erin Donnelly and Radhika Subramaniam
Director of AIOP: Ed Woodham
Artist Statement
"Inspired by a uniformed attendant holding the sign Hold the Handrail in a Taipei metro station, I've created this moving installation/performance piece. In wearable sculptures of multicolored crocheted camouflage, my performers appear in various sites on 14th Street, displaying photographs of signs I've collected from different countries that are in emphatic, ironic or amused dialogue with their location."

This is a panorama of the Victoria Harbour stitched together using 13 full-resolution handheld 6D RAW captures.
I used to avoid taking photographs at “touristy” spots, but I really hope to document the change of the architectural landscape over time, and so I will be doing more of these in the future.
On the left hand side of the photo, there is a crane doing some heavy lifting on the sea. Most of the newer skyline of Hong Kong were built upon landfills, so my guess is that they are probably in the process of reclaiming more lands.
This was photographed at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade looking across the harbour so what you see in the middle is Wan Chai with the unmistakeable HKCEC. The tallest building in the center is Central Plaza. The gigantic object rising on the right is IFC (International Financial Centre).
Densely packed skyscrapers against rolling hills is one of the key distinctive features of Hong Kong which is unusual when compared to other international metropolis in the world.

Several hundred people gathered at Chater Garden in Central, Hong Kong yesterday to show their support for Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower who recently made the US NSA PRISM electronic surveillance program public.
Since the PRISM program does not really distinguish its users — and specifically if is _really_ is to protect the American public from terrorism, then it is clear that foreign traffic is its target, banners and signs specifically call on the US government to stop spying on foreign data.
Snowden has also mentioned that the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), its being the main backbone of Hong Kong’s internet traffic, has been one of the hacking target by the NSA, including other private businesses and citizens. The locals are specifically enraged by this fact, especially since the US has called on China for doing cyber espionage on American technology companies.
Perhaps China is also trying to do anti-terrorism? Hey, you never know.

This panorama covering 360-degree horizontally and 96 degree vertically was stitched doing using 22 full res capture with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L. It is hard to get an aerial vantage point on this gathering, and noting that the event already has many public media presence, I chose to do panoramic photography for the most part of this event.
This is stitched together using Autopano Giga 3, with the anti-ghost algorithm. Since the program cannot output layered PSD files with layer masks I can only utilise their algorithms to managing ghosting vs missing body parts. You will see mostly odd time-variable missing body parts in this case.

日觀峰 (日观峰 “Sun observation peak” Rì guān fēng) is located at the south east to 玉皇頂 (玉皇顶 Yù huáng dǐng). In ancient times it was called 介丘岩 (Jiè qiū yán) and is famed for its view of the sunrise. The entire 觀日長廊 (观日长廊 “Sun view gallery” Guān rì cháng láng) spans 30 meters in length.
At the northern side of the gallery, there is a 6.5-meter-long boulder named 拱北石 (“North cove rock” Gǒngběi shí). It is considered the best location to view the sunrise. (1. Baidu: 日观峰 / SML Translate)

Originally I had come here to do time-lapse of the sunset, though right before I started the timer, I was working on an HDR panorama of the scenery, and had forgotten to turn off AEB (auto-exposure bracketing) setting when the timer started running. So what ended up happening is that I now have a series of HDR time-lapse footage.
In the perfect world, perhaps, these captures will automatically be stacked to HDR, then perhaps with a script I will be able to batch-process them throughout. But since I have not yet figured out how to do this, here I present you with a still capture from one of the series, here I present you with one of the HDR captures instead.

Red ribbons with locks were seen all over the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple.
Similar sightings were seen in almost every temple I have been to during this trip, so I asked the local what it was about. They told me that Chinese couples visit the temples before they get married, and the locks were used to “bind” their love together forever.

The Shilin Night Market (Chinese: 士林夜市; pinyin: Shìlín Yèshì) is a night market in the Shilin District of Taipei, Taiwan, and is often considered to be the largest and most famous night market in the city.
The food court used to be on ground level, which was probably rather unhygienic. Nowadays the food court has been relocated underground, as can be seen here in this panoramic view. This was taken around 5pm, right before it becomes crowdy. By six o'clock the place was so packed that I could barely move around.
Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM, handheld, 8 captures. Stitched with Autopano Giga 3. Processed in Lightroom 5.

Ever since the EOSM has disappeared into the SML Blackhole [1], 彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) has been working hard to continue doing photography with the 7D. Most recently, he became interested in the 100-400 because with the super telephoto he deduced that he might be able to find some other teddies nearby.
But in reality, this photo was mainly to show what that US$4 umbrella looks like. It is not silky smooth—to be frank, it has all kinds of wrinkling on its surface, even the bokeh could not hide that fact. But as you can see, a reflector is a reflector is a reflector. It does its job, and for a starving artist like SML, any penny saved is another bread on the table…
RT needed a stool on the chair because alas the Manfrotto tripod could only go as low as that, apparently.
Pictured: RT with the 7D + battery grip + 100-400 unextended. Shot with the 6D + 24-70 f/2.8L with 90EX as remote strobe + 580EX with bargain umbrella on top left, and another 430EX bargain umbrella on top right. At this rate SML should be able to afford some lightbox + monolights soon. Stay tuned!

Here is another sculpture by Chiharu Shiota seen at ARNDT during Art Basel Hong Kong 2013.
A sea a black threads attached to a metal frame suspends a horn in mid-air. The threads create a cocoon, a place for the musical instrument to float in air like magic. It feels like that you should be able to reach it, but you cannot as the web is in the way. The thread web creates the volume, even though the volume is mostly made with air. It is contained, yet it is not.
It is an academically sound creation. Serious yet fun at the same time — and it is easy to see why I absolutely adore this artist by the end of the show.

A woman in Chinese traditional dress 旗袍 Qipao lies in a bed of colorful flowers served in a highly decorated dinner plate fitting for a banquet. She is headless and armless except with her legs extending out in a highly sexualised pose. She is without identity, and she does not appear to have a choice but to lie there for all to feast on.
This ceramic / porcelain sculpture by Chinese artist Liu Jianhua 刘建华 (劉建華) may be funny at first, but is a social commentary about the anonymous and exploitable exoticism once associated with China in the West.
The imagery of the limbless sends a shock down my memory lane, as it reminds me of one of ancient China’s most torturous punishment: removing every limb from a person and stick them onto a vase as a permanent fixture of shame. And for this commentary it is both brilliant and depressing.
Before Liu Jianhu went to study sculpture in art school, he spent many years working at porcelain factories in Jingdezhen (景德镇市 景德鎮市). Jingdezhen was known to be the finest city for porcelain / china production since the Song Dynasty (宋朝), and it is no doubt from his years of working which allowed the artists to excel in producing such exquisite craftsmanship.
