Every time I go to Wu Kai Sha, I see an old man with long flowing silver beard picking stones at the beach.

After some research, it turns out that he has been manually organising the stones on the beach for years voluntarily after noting that quite a number of people swim at the public beach which is not looked after by government officials.

And so day and night, he comes to the beach to sort the stones out into neatly organised piles so that other people can enjoy the beach.

What an incredible story — I was planning to shoot some documentary here perhaps but the locals told me that his story is quite well known and has been covered by televisions in Hong Kong already — though I have no idea where. When I get the courage to speak to strangers, I will go investigate further.

Stay tuned.

These two look cute together - they're not "together" - just friends!

Crochet artwork in the background by Agata Olek.

I came here originally because I saw some asian waterbirds but by the time I came they were already gone. I have no idea what time they come out, so instead I ended up photographing sparrows—which is a bird but definitely much smaller.

This was photographed with the 7D with the 100-400, and here you see that at ISO 1000 the 7D is quite grainy when compared to the 6D. This is why I pretty much stop bothering carrying the 7D when I do night shots these days.

Again, bokeh is creamy but even with nature forms I see some oddity to it. I can’t quite describe it except that it feels somewhat “articulated” to my taste. Lens resolution is decent as you can make out some spider web on the left.

I spent five days in Helsinki at the end of my month of Europe. I went there, mostly, to see a show of Alexander Aristoteles — someone I met originally from LinkedIn, randomly, because I responded to an equally random post.

Titled “Conversational Semi-Self Portrait,” this show / performance art / idk-what-to-call this is a “thing” where you would sit with Alex to have a conversation on the streets of Helsinki. At the end of it, Alex sets up his analog camera on a tripod in front of you, give you the remote release, and let you take a self portrait of yourself.

I arrived at Narinkkatori Square around 5pm on August 14, 2024 — during the Helsinki Night of the Arts. I saw that Alex already had everything setup, and was talking to a man. I waited patiently and took a few photos while they talked to each other. There was a line.

Alex saw me, and told me that very sadly, his camera was malfunctioning, and must thus end the show early.

“Would you still like to chat anyway?” He asked. I said, “Of course. This sounds like fun.” I offered to let him use my camera to take my photo at the end of our chat.

“But you must press the button. Do you have a remote?” Why, of course I do. The brilliance of modern digital camera is that I could use my phone as a remote. No more release cable, baby!

He reminded me that I could only take ONE photo. One. The age of digital photography meant that one is so hard. I took it. I completed the event as a participant. I processed the photo.

We talked about many things — things that I probably should never write about. I have always enjoyed our conversations. They are always very real.

I tend to avoid talking to people because I tend to say what I think without edits. I learned that I really shouldn’t be doing a lot of that — the right to say anything is sometimes highly discouraged by my logical brain.

Alex would always tell me to just say what I want to say — it’s almost like a dare. It’s hard to believe that when we met for his “thing” that night in Helsinki, it was only the second time I saw him in person. We did have extensive chats on various apps. He is one of the people who have been on the receiving end of my essay-length messages — but who actually read it and answered. I don’t know if you know how rare that is.

Hong Kong is one of the highest density cities in the world, mostly because while most cities in the world are built on flatland, Hong Kong’s geography is mostly made up with mountains and steep hill.

In fact, according to Wikipedia, More people in Hong Kong live or work above the 14th floor than anywhere else on Earth, making it the world’s most vertical city [1].

Pictured is one of the public housing architectures in Hong Kong. It packs a lot of population in a single block, while leaving enough space around buildings for breathing room.

This was shot earlier this month with the 7D. Not wide enough. Trust that I will be going back soon with the 6D.

www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html

The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation's largest urban forum for experimental art.

Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists' studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.

The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

Residents of Parkview (陽明山莊) wait for their shuttle to come after a day of work. Many residential developments in Hong Kong have private shuttles which allow residents to live far away from city center while having convenient transportation options.

Central (中環) is the financial district of Hong Kong. The tallest building in the center is the IFC complex, to its right on the far side of the ocean is ICC. Norman Foster’s HSBC HQ is near the left, and the Bank of China by IM Pei can be see on the far left.

This 360-degree panorama was taken handheld (thus parallax errors) on the balcony level of the City Hall when I went to see Jörg Demus last month. I have a tendency to be late so these days I try to go a bit earlier and use the extra time before to do photography nearby.

Charles Arthur Russell, Jr. (May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992) was an American cellist, composer, singer, and disco artist. While he found the most success in dance music, Russell's career bridged New York's downtown, rock, and dance music scenes; his collaborators ranged from Philip Glass to David Byrne to Nicky Siano. Relatively unknown during his lifetime, a series of reissues and compilations have raised his profile in the 2000s.

This was my first time in Malaysia, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the temperature to be around 25-35 degree celsius even during winter. In a country where summer is all year-round, a nice splash of water from the fountain at the city center is a very welcoming treat.

When I first started the 寧 Serenity, I expected that it could not last too long because how much could someone photograph the view outside one’s window?

But I was wrong. In every single capture, I observe how the same become different, and how I am getting better at photographing something as mundane as the view outside my window—simply because my standards also go up as a result of doing it over and over again.

Some artists I see will try to paint / photograph something different every time they utilise their medium. I think that trying new things is great, but so is doing the same thing repeatedly. Like nature, life never really does repeats itself. And so when you do things repeatedly it also tend to be different each time. When you add all these minute differences over time you will see a dramatic difference to your art over time.

I believe in that. So this series will continue. It would, I think, be interesting 10 years from now to look back and see just how crappy these photos are…

Photography as an art form is different than photography as a scientifically accurate portrayal of reality. This is something I struggle with daily. When I photograph things which are in particular journalism worthy then I think that accuracy matters. But when it is to assert your own point of view then you do not really need to worry about how close to reality your photo is. Since any monkey can operate a technologically advanced optical instrument to reproduce reality, the job for a photographer is to assert his own processing, I think.

By processing in black and white and using different channels for color mixing, you can achieve tonal differences which are far different than the original luminance values of the photo.

Since their ice cream selection changes often, HeartsChallenger doesn't have a fixed menu. Instead, they print the photos and names of their selection onto these magnetized labels which sticks to their truck when ready to serve.

Porsches are everywhere in Hong Kong, so I’ve wised up—there is no reason to go look for them on the street really, all I need to do is go downstairs to the car park and there is a healthy dose of them in very bright colors.

The 911s are my favorite Porsche model—the duck which speeds. Beautiful forms and very humanistic. It is an unassuming form which roars when it runs.

Much thanks for Johan Lauri from Sweden for alerting me about it!

The folks at Involution Studios where Juhan Sonin works houses a gigantic 48" wide plotter where they print site maps and design sketches in their full glory. No more squinting at hard-to-read prints coming out from the tabloid-size fiery. Now that's something I would really like to have to print my oversize photos :)

As always, I prefer natural looking HDRs, but then this sky is calling for drama—mostly courtesy of the full frame body + 17-40. To be frank I am super happy with the 6D purchase, and am very glad that I finally get to photograph scenes on the wide end. Nature can be so dramatic.

This is handheld—banking on my window, so the +3 shot was at ISO 320 but it is close enough that the moving boat did not cause too much of a ghosting thanks to 6D’s decent 4fps shooting.
