Being a Queenslander, I could almost live on the smell of a sugar mill! But sugar cane is also cultivated in the Northern Rivers district of New South Wales. Three mills ply their trade in the area, Condong in the Tweed River area, Broadwater (this one) in the Richmond River area and Harwood, the southern most on the Clarence River. Condong used to be connected to the NSW rail system (but not now) - all three otherwise and unlike most Queensland mills rely solely on road transport to bring in the cut cane.

The truck seen on the old highway is a sugar cane truck, coming to or leaving the mill.

Bull sniffing the air with a cow laying in the cattails nearby. Seen in eastern Washington.

Fyero photobombed me today; but meh, who am I to argue?

Everything is wrong with this photo, the light isn't balanced, it's overexposed, it's not weighted properly, there's a flare smackdab in the centre and yet I don't care. It's adorable and I think it's a sweet shot.

It's a good Sunday shot, if you ask me. Spontanious and relaxed. So thank you Fyero for sticking your nose in the frame!

Hope everyone has had a good day.

Walk among the dunes at Kenfig and occasionally you will come across a purple orchid spike that does not belong to a pyramidal. Note the dense inflorescence, the somewhat concealed very long flower spurs (most visible at bottom left), then smell the flowers. If they smell like a whore's boudoir (not speaking from personal experience, of course!) then you have identified a fragrant orchid. This species prefers the drier, sandier parts of the reserve.

Down at the bottom right there is a bright yellow bug, with a huge abdomen and cartoon-like face. Any entomologist out there care to enlarge the image and identify it ?

The smells. That's what takes me back. Like an encore at the end of the night, just one more song. Back to the sidewalk with the Italian oleander and the sea in the air. Back to the roadside fruit stand raspberries, taking customer orders after school on Wednesdays and Fridays. Back to the couch watching cartoons with cinnamon and syrup fingers. Home and travels, breathe it in so you can keep them forever.

As much as I love the 'renewal' of Spring, I think Autumn/Fall is my favourite season, not least for the array of gold and reds, but also the golden light, long shadows and the gentle smell of smoke in the air from homes setting up the fireplace. After an ugly couple of weeks of pounding rain and windstorms, we've enjoyed a gloriously sunny autumn weekend - the colours right now are striking.

Port Jefferson is a beautiful, historic town located on the North Shore of Long Island where the smell of salt in the air and the sound of the Long Island Ferry is never too far in the distance. This waterfront town was settled in the 1600s as a rural town, but transitioned into a shipbuilding center in the 1800s.

Many of the historic buildings and homes still standing in Port Jefferson belonged to prominent sailors and shipbuilders in the area. Visitors to the town can still take in a slice of history at buildings like the Village Center. The Village Center was formerly a shipyard, where builders worked tirelessly to create and immediately launch ships into the Long Island Sound.

Today, Port Jefferson is widely known as a popular tourist spot in Suffolk County, as well as a transport hub thanks to the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, which takes hundreds of passengers to and from Connecticut each day. Port Jeff is busiest in the summer, but it also draws many tourists for unique events like the Charles Dickens Festival, which is held every December.
