20 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC visiting Tirta Empul (Holy Spring) Temple, Tampaksiring, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977.

One of the piers in a temple wall had developed a bit of a lean. Not really a problem as some thoughtful person had found a piece of timber with which it could be propped up. The truly miraculous event was that Lloyd (the Log) Kenny had walked past it without accidently kicking it out and bringing the entire temple down around our ears. Big, tall Loggy (furthest along the row at the wall) had a talent for falls. When he fell, he fell like tall timber in the forest (hence the nickname). This often prompted the burly imp, Guri (Gookie) Lluka, to bellow "Timber!" when he sighted Lloyd for the first time each day.

One day in Denpasar Lloyd managed to tumble into a 2 m deep storm water drain and, having scrambled out, he then immediately tripped in a pothole and went sprawling onto a busy road. Motorcycles, free range pigs, pariah dogs, stray chickens and gobsmacked pedestrians went in all directions.

Lloyd's best tumble was at the cockfighting pit. The sport is unsavoury. I had no desire to watch two roosters with razor-sharp blades strapped to their legs fighting to the death and even less desire to wager on the outcome. Curiosity drew us in however and so not appreciating the 'sport' I thought I'd watch the crowd rather than the fighting. It was an experience in joyous disregard for life that failed to impress me.

The 'pit' was a small sandy arena surrounded by steeply sloping stepped walls. The crowd stands around on these steps, cheering on their bird. At the top of the pit were wooden benches. When all the room in the pit was taken people could pay to stand on the bench at the rim of the pit and peer over the surging crowd's heads. The man in charge of one bench had crammed about as many spectators onto his bench as it could take. Despite the critical bend in the middle of the plank he thought one more fare could be squeezed out of the bench. At this point he spied Lloyd.

Lloyd parted with a coin worth less than a farthing and stepped up onto the bench. With a mighty crack the plank snapped, spilling people back over a table crammed with snacks for sale, or cascading them forward into the crowd thronging the pit. People tumbled into each other in a knock on sequence that soon spilled down onto the sands of death. At this point with spectators landing about them the startled roosters lost interest in fighting and took off into the crowd, slashing about with their bladed legs. Pandemonium ensued, with people struggling about in the press trying to dodge the runaway roosters.

The man who owned the bench was outraged. He demanded reparations for the damage inflicted upon his asset or he would personally call President Suharto. Or so it seemed by his histrionics. Strategic withdrawal was called for before order could be restored and blame apportioned. We left in some haste having placed an appropriate amount of restitution in the man's hand.

The Tathra Surf Life Saving Club in New South Wales, Australia.

A set that transports the audience to another era - but no specific era, just that of the "generic past." But, in lieu of actual people moving about in the corridor upstairs, we have fleeting images that look as if from a multimedia projector - tying past to present.

27 July 2013 at Rainbow Beach, Queensland.

The Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club was established in June 1965 at a meeting held at the Freemasons Hotel, Gympie.

6 June 2013

MAJOR renovations to the Rainbow Beach Surf Club are progressing well, according to treasurer Ron Organ.

Mr Organ said the surf club was building a new enclosed deck to give the club more room for patrons.

He said the deck extension was more than twice the size of the old one and took in south-easterly views of the ocean and Double Island Point.

Mr Organ said the deck was going to be roofed and fully enclosed with glass.

This would allow the area to be used in all weather conditions.

The extension would include special windows that could be open on fine days to allow the sea breeze to flow though the building.

The extension was the next step in the redevelopment of the club house.

A new facade and bar have already been completed and the club was hoping to build new dorms, for surf club members, in the near future.

This would free up more room in the club house and restaurant.

39 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC training Indonesians in surf reel and belt, Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977

The Indonesians and Oriental tourists found my complexion, hairy limbs and height fascinating. Unlike other Australians, no amount of sun exposure could darken my skin. This was regarded by the Indonesians as a positive boon. Fair skin was regarded as a status symbol because of the perception that fair skinned people were not obliged to expose themselves to the sun like common peasants and peddlers. Rather, they were wealthy enough to stay indoors.

Indonesians have little or no body hair, and what little they had was black. My arms and legs were well covered in red hair. I had men feeling my forearms and saying "Oh, very good. Very strong." Hairiness apparently equated to manliness. At 6'4" I towered over most of the Indonesian men. Many did not reach my shoulders. Interestingly, as I worked on the beach, Oriental tourists would walk up and pose beside me as their friends photographed us. No doubt when they returned home they could show photographs titled 'This is me with the hairy, white giant'. I always smiled and posed for them, understanding their fascination with an odd looking human. Their smiles and thanks came in any number of languages. It left me amused and wondering if perhaps I had a career in Oriental circuses. I'll never know.

19 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC visiting Tirta Empul (Holy Spring) Temple, Tampaksiring, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977.

The pavilioned platforms in the temple were typical of those found in any traditional Balinese family compound. Bungalos were increasing in popularity but the traditional platforms in the extended family compound were still popular. They had the advantage of good ventilation, but at the cost of privacy. At leas the eyes spying were family eyes, as the high compound walls locked out any but invited guests.

I faced a cultural dilemma at this point. Made had picked a hibiscus flower and placed it behind my ear. To wear it or discard it? I had no inclination to offend Made, but Made had offended me by placing the flower behind my ear without my permission. I noted Balinese wearing flowers quite frequently and so Made's offence was absolutely innocent and indeed he was attempting to demonstrate goodwill. Alone I would have worn the flower, but I was in the company of my teammates. Australian surfboat rowers and Rugby League players do not wear flowers in their hair -- or at least they didn't in 1977. Post Bali I overcame the fear of my peers' judgment and indeed began reacting against it. I will now put a flower behind my ear just for the reaction. Thank you Made for forcing me to face an inhibition.

At the time though my best attempt at not being thought of as a pansy, and not offending Made, was to carry rather than wear the hibiscus flower. There I am, desperately trying to explain myself and my flower to Ken (Wolfman) Warner. Wolfie may have believed I was a victim of circumstances -- or he may not have.
