The Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) from Morocco and the deodar (Cedrus deodara), a Himalayan cedar with longer, drooping needle leaves, are close relatives. All three are conifers in the pine family, Pinaceae. Their fruits are cones which are hard and woody with the seeds tucked between the scales. Unlike pine (Pinus) cones, cedar (Cedrus) cones break up when they are ripe.

Nuphar is genus of aquatic plants in the family Nymphaeaceae with a temperate Northern Hemisphere distribution. The common name, shared with some other genera in the same family, is water lily or waterlily.

 

There are from 1 to 25 species in the genus. Some botanists[1] treat the genus as just a single variable species (for which the European name N. lutea has priority), but 10-12 species are typically accepted by most authorities. Recent molecular work has shown that there is some difference between the European and American species.[2]

 

Nuphar pumila

 

The genus is closely related to Nymphaea (named after the Greek term "Νυμφαία", possibly related to "Νύμφη" meaning nymph). A large Ginkgo biloba tree grows the SLBI front garden - the reason for the 'Ginkgo cakes'.

 

The Ginkgo biloba leaves are unique among seed plants, being fan-shaped with veins radiating out into the leaf blade, sometimes bifurcating (splitting) but never anastomosing to form a network. Two veins enter the leaf blade at the base and fork repeatedly in two; this is known as dichotomous venation. The leaves are usually 5–10 cm (2-4 inches), but sometimes up to 15 cm (6 inches) long. The old popular name "Maidenhair tree" is because the leaves resemble some of the pinnae of the Maidenhair fern Adiantum capillus-veneris.

 

Leaves of long shoots are usually notched or lobed, but only from the outer surface, between the veins. They are borne both on the more rapidly-growing branch tips, where they are alternate and spaced out, and also on the short, stubby spur shoots, where they are clustered at the tips.

The Cep, Boletus edulis, (also known as Porcini or Penny Bun) is a an edible basidiomycete mushroom, that's a member of the Boletaceae (Bolete) family of mushrooms. It is a native of Europe and North America and is Europe's second most sought-after fungus (after truffles). The smaller ceps are most sought-after as the whole mushroom can be consumed and they retain their flavour when dried. Older specimens tend to become maggot-ridden and slimy. But the cap of a fully-grown penny bun can reach 25cm in diameter and may weigh up to 1 kg.

 

With its pale stem and russet cap the cep is hard to confuse with other species, indeed it can only really be confused with other members of the same family, none of which are in the least toxic. The only one to look out for is the Bitter Bolete, Tylophilus felleus which has brown stalks and cap and can be distinguished in that the gills bruise brown when pressed (it's not toxic, just too bitter to be pleasant). Because of this the cep is one of the safest fungi for the novice to forage for. Penny buns are found in woodlands (typically birch, oak, beech and pine) and are available from late summer to late autumn but are most abundant in September and October. They pickle well and also dry very well. Young ceps are excellent raw, or simply fried. Dried ceps can also be ground to provide a condiment or a flavouring for soups and stews.

 

The cap starts out much smaller than the stem and is deeply convex. The cap's colour is generally reddish-brown fading to white in areas near the margin, and continues to darken as it matures. The stipe (stem) is 8–25cm in height, and can be up to 7cm thick. The pores, which do not stain when bruised, are white when young, fading to yellow and then to brown with age and leave an olive brown spore print.

 

This specimen was collected the day before from Brookwood, Surrey.

Paris quadrifolia (Family: Trilliaceae)

Specimen from the South London Botanical Institute herbarium.

 

Trillium L., Paris L., Kinugasa Tatew. and Sutô, and Daiswa Ref. are genera of plants found in north temperate forests which make up the family Trilliaceae as defined by Takhtajan in 1987. Much of the current molecular work places the Trilliaceae basal to the Liliales confirming its place as a primitive monocot.

The wild field poppy enjoys cultivated and disturbed soil, which is why swathes of scarlet blooms often appear in cornfields. The basic form has scarlet, single flowers, each petal often marked at its base with a black blotch. Size varies according to the soil in which plants grow, the poorer the soil, the smaller and paler the blooms. Plants self-seed readily.

John Innes (1829-1904)

 

In his will John Innes established a Trust on land in Merton Park to establish a school of horticulture to give technical instruction in the principles of science and the art of horticulture. It became a centre for the investigation of how common fruit species breed and the development of new species.

 

He bought an area of farmland which he called Merton Park, built houses on some of it, and experimented with growing different crops for the London market.

 

John Innes composts

 

John Innes compost was developed in Merton, but subsequently the company sold up because of poor soil and moved first to Hertfordshire and then to Norwich, where research and training in plant science continues.

 

John Innes is commemorated with a fine table tomb in the churchyard at St Mary's, Merton Park, South West London. The holly hedges in the conservation area are a reminder of his enthusiasm for holly trees.

St Mary's lies in a quiet and historic corner of south west London, in the heart of the Merton Park Conservation Area, south of Wimbledon.

The Fairy Ring Mushroom is the main cause of circles of longer and darker green grass (fairy rings) in grassland, meadows, lawns and road verges throughout the British Isles. The toadstools appear after rain during the summer and autumn and are quite long-lived. It is comparatively tolerant of pollution and fertilizer.

It produces a basal rosette, from which grow flowering spikes with stiffly spiny foliage and stems. The flowers are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by bees, flies and beetles. The plant is self-fertile.

Cedrus

(Family: Pinaceae)

The Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) from Morocco and the deodar (Cedrus deodara), a Himalayan cedar with longer, drooping needle leaves, are close relatives. All three are conifers in the pine family, Pinaceae. Their fruits are cones which are hard and woody with the seeds tucked between the scales. Unlike pine (Pinus) cones, cedar (Cedrus) cones break up when they are ripe.

Here I am at the South London Botanical Institute - at one of their open days. The staff had kindly found this herbarium sheet for me. The plant is the Prickly Poppy - Papaver hybridum. Now one of the scarcer poppies in Kent. Collected by Robert Pocock in Denton Gravesend.

Originally from Asia, the black mulberry was introduced to Britain more than 500 years ago and cultivated as food for silkworms. Although this venture did not prove successful, its fruit is still eaten in various forms today.

 

The black mulberry is very common in London and can be found in back gardens as well as parks.

Seven Islands Pond had a large spreading stand of bogbean which needed to be reduced in size. The pond was recently de-silted after a survey and method statement detailed the least damaging way to carry out this work. However, de-silting causes the nutrients that are 'locked-up' in the silt to cause algal blooms. To prevent this straw bales were placed in the water body. Judging by the number of water fowl and invertebrates in and out of the water this management has clearly been successful and a visit in early Spring and the flowering time of the bogbean will prove interesting.

The Fairy Ring Mushroom is the main cause of circles of longer and darker green grass (fairy rings) in grassland, meadows, lawns and road verges throughout the British Isles. The toadstools appear after rain during the summer and autumn and are quite long-lived. It is comparatively tolerant of pollution and fertilizer.
