Flowering in the South London Botanical Institute garden, London, January 2009.
Sometimes known as the Algerian or winter-flowering iris, this is the perfect plant for hot dry impoverished soil . The long, tapering, blue flower buds appear throughout winter and early spring on short stalks from the base of the plants although the plants are hardy, the flowers are very much at the mercy of the weather, so if it is bad, pick the buds and bring them indoors to open in a vase. In all but the mildest regions, the protection of a south-facing wall is vital for flowers to be produced, and this also protects them from much weather damage.

Founded in 1910 in Tulse Hill, South London, the SLBI cares for an herbarium of both foreign and British plants. It has a beautiful botanical garden and an extensive library of botanical literature.
The volunteers in the Robert Pocock Project discovered that the herbarium contained some of his plants collected early in the 19th century - so they set out to find them.

Founded in 1910 in Tulse Hill, South London, the SLBI cares for an herbarium of both foreign and British plants. It has a beautiful botanical garden and an extensive library of botanical literature.
Many of the plants grown in the garden are of medicinal interest. They were used by apothecaries to cure different ills in the past. Others contain chemicals that were used for dyeing cloth or for food preparation.

John Innes Park and Recreation Ground are named after the wealthy property developer and philanthropist John Innes who is often credited with the original development of Merton Park as an attractive Victorian suburb in the 19th Century.
Upon his death in 1904, John Innes bequeathed his private estate and most of his money to the local community and toward horticultural research. The world famous John Innes Horticultural Institution was established in Merton Park in 1910. The Institute was the first research centre for plant breeding and genetics in the United Kingdom.
Further information about this park, John Innes and the South London Botanical Institute can be found here:

During the Robert Pocock Herbarium Project we gave illustrated talks to the public.
This talk was given to the South London Botanical Institute on 4th December 2015.
About the early history of the SLBI
Founded in 1910 by a keen botanist, Allan Octavian Hume (1829-1912), the aims of the Institute have remained almost unchanged in 100 years. Hume’s lasting contribution has been to provide an environment where those interested in plants, be they amateur or professional, may meet and develop their knowledge of plants.
Several generations of botanists have benefited from, and contributed to, the facilities available at the Institute. Today, members still enjoy, as they have done since the Institute’s inception, the evening lectures, field trips, workshops, library, garden and herbaria.
